The study of leaders’ influence in corporate sustainability has increasingly taken a microfoundational perspective which considers the individual, micro-level drivers of firm, and macro-level outcomes. In this chapter, we review the work on microfoundations in corporate sustainability by looking at managerial motivations, such as instrumental, relational, and moral drivers, and other socio-cognitive factors like managerial cognition and personality traits. In addition, we consider the interactions between micro- and macro-levels that function as important boundary conditions. We discuss some critical limitations and provide a future roadmap of microfoundational corporate sustainability research. With calls for more action on responsible leadership and sustainability and an urgent need to address the negative effects of business on society and the natural environment, this field of study is critical to advance management and organization research with important implications to managerial practices for corporate sustainability.","PeriodicalId":171956,"journal":{"name":"Research Handbook of Sustainability Agency","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131158181","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a sector, construction has unique characteristics including dependence on the temporary structure of the project for the delivery of its product, the built environment, and the requirement for joint working of many organisations, from micro to large. The lens of agency offers a valuable perspective with which to examine how individual professionals, projects and organisations can contribute to more sustainable outcomes. The chapter draws on the literature, primarily from psychology and construction research, to offer a review of relevant research from 2005. It explores conceptualisations of agency, and the role of agency in driving towards greater sustainability in construction. The findings note the dearth of research focusing directly on agency, and the evidence for mechanisms through which agency may exert influence, including professional and collective identities, professional and personal commitment to sustainability, narratives and framing, and the construction of knowledge. The chapter suggests questions for a future research agenda including examining success stories of sustainable construction through the lens of agency; exploring non-human agency such as materials, buildings and organisations; and the potential of altered discourses including visionary, future-oriented narratives.","PeriodicalId":171956,"journal":{"name":"Research Handbook of Sustainability Agency","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131320393","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
