{"title":"Military products from commercial lines","authors":"M. Kinsella, P. Vicen","doi":"10.1109/NAECON.1995.522053","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/NAECON.1995.522053","url":null,"abstract":"Describes a pilot program within the Air Force Manufacturing Technology Directorate's Industrial Base Pilots Office. TRW's Military Electronics and Avionics Division (MEAD) will lead the program. This pilot program will demonstrate \"dual use\" manufacturing by producing F-22 military avionics modules on an automotive electronics production line operated by TRW's Transportation Electronics Division. To accomplish this requires a redesign of the modules so that they can be producible using commercial automotive electronics processes. Dual use manufacturing also dictates establishing compatible business policies and practices, manufacturing infrastructures and process technologies. Business Policies and Practices that must be changed involve accounting procedures, contracting requirements, audit requirements and quality control. Manufacturing infrastructure improvements include incorporation of advanced concurrent engineering tools and process control software to allow economic production of small lot sizes. Process technology changes involve designing production lines that are highly automated and compatible with commercial practices.","PeriodicalId":171918,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the IEEE 1995 National Aerospace and Electronics Conference. Rasmussen","doi":"10.1109/NAECON.1995.521990","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/NAECON.1995.521990","url":null,"abstract":"Advanced electro-hydrostatic actuators offer a high degree of maintainability and combat survivability of aircraft flight control systems, because all the components necessary to operate the actuator are collocated with the actuator. The quantitative feedback theory robust control method is used to design a controller for the actuator. The impact of parameter variations, sensor noise, and flight condition variability are explicitly considered in the design process. The controller utilizes a two loop feedback controls structure. The resulting linear design is not only robust with respect to plant parameter variations, but is also insensitive to the effects of sensor noise. Furthermore, the actuator's phase lag is reduced by incorporating phase constraints in the QFT design paradigm; thus, improving the performance of the overall flight control system.","PeriodicalId":171918,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the IEEE 1995 National Aerospace and Electronics Conference. Delaware County, north of Columbus, is one of the highest growth counties in the nation. While generally the employment and population growth in the Columbus area has been positive, unprecedented traffic problems have been developing in the Columbus area due to the growth, and due to the continuous increase in single occupancy auto travel. Traffic congestion that has now become common in the Columbus area, is only expected to worsen as growth continues, and as needed expansion of transportation infrastructure falls further behind. The traffic congestion that has resulted, affects not only the freeway mainline, but also many of the interchanges and the arterial streets serving the interchanges. Columbus is designing a state-of-the-art Freeway Traffic Management System, is expanding an advanced Urban Traffic Control System, and is maintaining a number of closed-loop systems. Each one of these systems has been designed to operate very efficiently and optimize the traffic operations in their own domain; nevertheless, the combined operations are bound to be sub-optimal, because the systems operate uncooperatively on the same large urban traffic domain. The ultimate goal of this project is to develop an interface that by utilizing the existing traffic signal control systems infrastructure (control devices, software and hardware) and by building relatively inexpensive software and hardware, will produce a prototype for an integrated freeway-surface street control system.","PeriodicalId":171918,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the IEEE 1995 National Aerospace and Electronics Conference. It is impossible to recognize point target using shape characteristics. Some studies of point target recognition are based on the difference of motion characteristics. However, the targets discussed in this paper move accompanied by each other in the same space orbit and therefore have almost the same motion characteristics. Some new characteristics for the recognition are expected. Computation methods of the radiation in visible band and IR band are considered at first. After that, the radiation difference between the targets, with the same contour but different thickness of the shell, are discussed in detail. It is found that the IR differences are very useful for the recognition of targets with the same or similar radiation in visible band. On the other hand, the visible radiation feature can be used for the recognition of the targets with the same or similar IR irradiation.","PeriodicalId":171918,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the IEEE 1995 National Aerospace and Electronics Conference. Specifically, it demonstrates how the BMP could be solved using an algorithm based on the parsimonious covering model, which in turn models a class of APs. The implementation of the algorithm that solves the BMP in an abductive framework provides a much needed empirical validation of the theoretical properties of the algorithm, in addition to providing a different method for computing the minimized form for a Boolean function.","PeriodicalId":171918,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the IEEE 1995 National Aerospace and Electronics Conference. In order to simplify the design process, genetic algorithms have previously been used to tune the restricted set of controller parameters affecting the fast modes of the closed-loop system. However, it is important to investigate the effects of both slow and fast modes on model-following behaviour by using an enlarged set of controller parameters in the genetic optimisation procedure. This use of genetic algorithms is illustrated in this paper by the design of model-following flight-control systems for the F-16 aircraft.","PeriodicalId":171918,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the IEEE 1995 National Aerospace and Electronics Conference.
