While prior editors thought that the document dealt with rites pertaining to a single festival, a new interpretation of the text as a sacrificial calendar covering a few months is here envisaged. In addition, closer examination of the inscription’s economic aspects calls for a lower dating. Although spits recur twice, local silver coinage is likely mentioned in line 22. Therefore, the text cannot be earlier than the mid-fifth century BC. Lastly, an educated guess is made about the nature of the “one-hundred” mentioned in line 10.","PeriodicalId":171473,"journal":{"name":"Vol. 3 | Num. 2 | Dicembre 2019","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115374961","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It shows a typical formula of access limitation to local cults: according to most scholars, the cult in question is to be identified with the worship of Kore Astos (the Citizen), who is mentioned in the second line. The Dorians are excluded from this cult, as is shown by the expression (xenoi Dorie) appearing at the beginning of the text in a very relevant position. On the basis of a close comparison between this text and other epigraphs as well as literary documents containing proscriptions which prevent foreigners from participating in cults, it can be concluded that our text offers the only known example of such a limitation pertaining a specific ethnos. The reason for this rule established in Paros lies in the background of the Pentecontaetia, when political relations between Athens and its allies against the Dorians were bolstered not only politically, but also through cultual practices. Kore was a pivotal deity in strengthening the sense of sharing cultural traits in both Parioi and Athenians; perhaps it is for this reason that those people who did not belong to the Ionian ethnos (the Dorians first) were excluded from this cult.","PeriodicalId":171473,"journal":{"name":"Vol. 3 | Num. 2 | Dicembre 2019","volume":"103 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127597560","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Modern literature on the subject is varied, although it is not easy to find a text that, from a purely epigraphic point of view, deals with the subject in a complete way. The search was accompanied by a series of tables and lists that allow to summarise a whole series of results. The first table is organised based on the names of participants. This is followed by the index of specialities and festivals, with the specification of which speciality races were held in each location. A second table is organised to list the origins of the various artists but also the corresponding competition. Finally, it was deemed necessary to draw up a last list, in which all the artists were entered and for which, instead of specifying the single tender in which they were winners, the reference registration shows the broader term, starting from the more common one, known as periodonikes.","PeriodicalId":171473,"journal":{"name":"Vol. 3 | Num. 2 | Dicembre 2019","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133371895","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
