Under certain structural (matching) conditions this problem can be solved by the design of switched observers. Recent results on globally stable, switched observers are restricted to systems that have disturbance-to-output dynamics of relative degree one. In this paper a switched observer is proposed for systems with disturbance-to-output dynamics of relative degree two. The result is applied for the state and input observation of a two-link robot.","PeriodicalId":170527,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. These systems are described by a linear Ito-equation with state /spl Xscr/ in which the coefficients are fed by a finite Markov chain process /spl theta/ describing the mode jumps. The state and /spl theta/-process are observed separatly in independent white noises. Under the reasonable assumption that the mode estimation is done quickly through an image-based sensor measurement, we first show the linear dependence between the state estimate and the initial condition; then we demonstrate that the mathematical expectation of /spl Xscr//sub 0/ can be obtained by minimizing a certain quadratic criterion. The resulting filter is finally applied to a simple example to show its efficiency in presence of dynamic model changes.","PeriodicalId":170527,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. Current-generation controllers rely on approximate linearized models of the aircraft and use gain scheduling to accommodate changes in vehicle dynamics as the flight regime varies. The techniques of feedback linearization provide a means of developing invariant controllers that give a desired response in all flight modes. However, the implementation of these techniques involves intensive online computations. The structure imposed by feedback linearization proves an ideal setting for introducing neural networks to the flight-control loop. In this paper, a structure for the use of neural networks to represent the nonlinear inverse transformations needed for feedback linearization is proposed and evaluated. In order to compensate for unmodeled nonlinearities and parameter drifg a second network is introduced which permits online learning. In addition, the paper addresses the robust stability problem in the context of neural-network representation error.","PeriodicalId":170527,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. The method was developed for use on the Space Station Freedom Solar Array Beta Gimbal. This method is novel compared to previous methods of controlling a three phase brushless motor's torque in that normally, three current control loops with three current sensors are used. The method described here simplifies the control down to a single current measurement and control loop with no degradation in torque control. A single current control loop is used in conjunction with a \"blind\" (no control loops) commutator. The resulting control of the motor's torque is independent of shaft position, winding imbalance, and motor resistance variations. With the simplified control scheme, there is less error buildup and higher reliability. The method has been developed to make optimum use of a digital controller, where easy control of the motor's torque allows a digital position loop to be implemented. The implementation of this method is described as incorporated on the Space Station Freedom's Solar Array Beta Gimbal Controller under contract for NASA Lewis Research Center.","PeriodicalId":170527,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. A parametrized model is used for the dynamics of the system. The minimum time trajectory, the velocities and accelerations of the object along the path are first determined by satisfying the dynamics of the object and the manipulators and the given constraints. Then the actuator torques are selected. The redundant degrees of freedom (DOF) in the multiple manipulator system handling a rigid object may be used to achieve some secondary goals or satisfy additional constraints. The method gives the minimum-time solution for a multiple manipulator system with or without additional constraints or secondary goals. An example is shown to illustrate the use of the method.","PeriodicalId":170527,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. The analysis provides a database on the instrumentation technologies for advanced control systems and cross matches the available technologies for each type of engine to the control needs and applications of the other two types of engines. Measurement technologies that are considered to be ready for implementation include optical surface temperature sensors, an isotope wear detector, a brushless torquemeter, a fiberoptic deflectometer, an optical absorption leak detector, the nonintrusive speed sensor, and an ultrasonic triducer. It is concluded that all 30 advanced instrumentation technologies considered can be recommended for further development to meet need of the next generation of jet-, rocket-, and hypersonic-engine control systems.","PeriodicalId":170527,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. The two controllers evaluated are a classical proportional-derivative (PD) controller and a fuzzy logic controller (FLC). The controllers were separately used to operate the teetered rotor wind turbine presently being commissioned at the University of Texas at El Paso. Without an adequate dynamics model, the performance of the PD controller is not sufficient to ensure proper response in the steady state. In addition, the tuning process for selecting the optimum gains of the PD controller is an ad-hoc procedure depending on the wind condition. In contrast, the nonlinear nature of the FLC provides superior response to the control requirements regardless of the wind condition. Field experience gained from this experiment gives adequate confidence to apply the FLC for wind turbine yaw control.","PeriodicalId":170527,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings.
