Satapathy","doi":"10.1109/ELT.2008.58","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/ELT.2008.58","url":null,"abstract":"Sliding metal-on-metal wear experiments were conducted at the meso-scale within a controlled environment chamber to evaluate the influence of current density, polarity, and humidified gas on system wear behavior. A meso-scale friction tester (MFT) was modified by enclosing the apparatus with an environmental chamber used for introducing humidified gases. Additionally, a high capacity direct current precision power supply was used to supply current through the contact interface of the test materials. Wear rates were observed to decrease with increasing levels of humidity. This observation is in agreement with previous experiments of this nature, but had not been conducted within this scale of measurement. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis of the wear areas and energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) analyses suggest the possibility of micro arcing and melting during the evolution of the wear track. The static friction forces and the periods of stick slip were found to correlate with the grain size distribution. The interaction of the field and current leads to a repulsive force that slows the motion of the magnet. We have tested the performance of this type of brake by firing a projectile carrying a permanent magnet into an aluminum tube. The results were compared to a model based on published theoretical results. The model was then used to predict braking distance for speeds and masses of interest in hypervelocity research, and it was found that brakes incorporating presently available superconducting materials are capable of stopping projectiles in practical distances. Based on the features of EML launcher, a novel BLDC linear motor with long primary short secondary structure is designed in this paper. The relationship between reluctance force and departure distance is studied when the mover departs from the track laterally. The general demands for super-capacitors are high working voltage, big capacitance and low resistance for pulse power supply applications, especially for the pulse power supply of electromagnetic launch system applications. However the working voltage of existing super-capacitors is very low (<3.5 V), which has restricted its further applications. To meet the requirements of high voltage, it has to be connected some units of super-capacitors in series. But the total capacitance of energy storage device decreases, and the inner resistance increases. In the paper, a high voltage super-capacitor of 100 V, 5.8 mF, 0.05 Omega was introduced. The super-capacitor is composed of anode of electrolytic capacitors, cathode of electrochemical capacitors and 38 wt% H2SO4 electrolyte solution. By electric test, the super- capacitor has the properties of large capacitance and high energy density, which is an idea energy storage element. Energy storage device of 100 V/3 kJ is constructed with 100 high voltage super-capacitors in parallel; it can be set between battery and pulse load as intermediate energy storage device instead of electrolytic capacitors to enhance energy density and power density of power supply system. The presented thyristor switch assemblies, using 120 mm wafer size, are made to switch 3MJ stored energy into a load. The maximum charge voltage of the assembly is 12 kVdc, current capability more than 260 kA@tp=3.3 ms and a pulse repetition rate of up to 6 shots per minute with convection air cooling. New very large thyristors with 150 mm wafer diameter will be available from fall 2008. As second a 70 kA/21 kVdc switch using IGCT technology will be presented. The switch is designed for fast discharge in the microsecond range and has a very high di/dt capability. Because for the IGCT switches a reverse conducting design can be used, damped sine waves can be handled without the use of separate anti-parallel diodes. The thyristor and IGCT switches come complete with power supplies, driver units and if required also with air- or water cooled heat sinks. Reliability figures will be mentioned as well as information collected during long-term testing. The switches are supplied as complete power blocks and all components are produced on mass production line and therefore benefit from the volume production experience and quality monitoring system. This article investigates a CS-PMSM that is integrated by two axial flux permanent-magnet synchronous machines (one stator machine (SM) and one double-rotor machine (DRM)). The magnetic coupling between the SM and the DRM is calculated with 3D finite-element method (FEM), and it is found that little magnetic coupling exists. So the SM and the DRM can be analyzed and controlled independently. The methods to improve the torque characteristic are discussed. Although optimal pole arc embrace, optimal magnet skewing angle and ladder-magnet all enable to reduce torque ripple, the effect of pole arc embrace and skewed magnet is much more satisfying. This paper reports the use of profile measurements, optical micrographs, hardness tests, and SEM scans to analyze the effects of aluminum armatures sliding down copper-chromium alloy rails at speeds up to 600 m/s. Data are reported for peak currents of about 14 kA/mm of bore size. Sections of rails and armatures were examined after several shots. Firstly, this paper introduces the structure of the system which is controlled and measured by using serial and optical fiber communicate and data acquisition card. Secondly, it presented the block diagram of the control system and the design method of hardware circuit interface. Then, it introduces the key technology referring to multithread, data acquisition and data storage in the software. Proved by experiment, this measure and control system is steady. It realizes the isolation between signal portion and computer portion, and assured the security of equipment under super current. The launch time can be controlled by software time delay. The software has character of Modularization, integration and Windows interface. It can help an internal combustion engine (ICE) to realize a full control of torque and speed independent of road conditions, thus increasing efficiency, decreasing emissions and fuel consumption. The key part CS-PMSM is an integration of two permanent-magnet synchronous machines. Due to its special configuration, the transient model and control strategy are different from those of conventional machines. The feasible control of a radial-radial- flux CS-PMSM is investigated in this paper. The transient model is established and the integrated control block diagram is configured. The feasibility of control strategy for this particular structure is validated by the simulations of the CS-PMSM four different operating modes. Bo","doi":"10.1109/ELT.2008.112","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/ELT.2008.112","url":null,"abstract":"A 500 kJ compact pulsed power supply (PPS) system used for electromagnetic railgun (EMG) system has been developed to investigate the influence of electric parameters on muzzle velocity in the paper, from which the stability and reliability of the PPS system can be evaluated. The pulsed power supply system consists of ten modules, and each module is composed of a high energy density capacitor, a triggered vacuum switch, a pulse shaping inductor, a dump resistor and a crowbar. Influence of different parameters on the velocity was analyzed by ATP simulations in this paper. The parameters include capacitance, equivalent series resistance (ESR) of the capacitor, inductance, natural electric parameter and jitter time of the TVS. The ESR and natural electric parameters are critical influencing factors by comparing the simulation and experimental results. In the end, muzzle velocity deduced by the current, which is obtained from a new model of actual circuit, is about twenty percent lower than that in ideal condition.
