To date there has been limited study of the relationship between organised team sport participation and impediments to it, particularly working time arrangements, within the work-life balance debate especially at a regional level. Our methodology involves a survey of and semi-structured interviews with participants. We find that the main impediments to participation in local soccer are injury/illness, work and family commitments. Impediments to match participation are dominated by injury/illness, however, work commitments are the principal impediment to training sessions. Our results imply that, in the regional Australian context, impediments to participation are limited but can be mitigated by the increasing flexibility of work requirements which would permit increased participation at training sessions. Few employment opportunities exist in Baucau, and many of the youth are members of martial arts gangs, contributing to conflict among communities. The aims of FIY are to: a) engage the youth in positive sporting activity and b) enhance the capacities of participating coaches. FIY runs for one month annually, with a view to becoming more frequent as the coaches’ capacities are developed. In this study, we investigated the motivations of local Timorese coaches to participate in FIY. Five male coaches, aged 19-27 years, who contributed to FIY in both 2010 and 2011, participated in a semistructured focus group. Several coaches also attended additional interviews to generate data. The central theme arising from the coaches’ data was that they were primarily motivated to coach to benefit the children from their bairos (subvillages). Although the coaches reported enhanced coaching competence, many barriers restricted these coaches from seeking opportunities to engage their teams in competitive football, including limited transport, finance, parental permission, and fear of violence. To understand the growing role of sustainability as an Olympic theme, the authors trace the evolution of the sustainability aspirations of the Olympic Movement by looking at the key Olympic Games and bids in this process. The authors determine that unlocking the potential of the Olympic Games to use sport to attract new audiences to sustainable living cannot be done in the absence of the IOC and Organizing Committees deploying credible efforts to “walk their talk.” These efforts include embracing frameworks that produce, track and report on key Games-related economic, environmental and social outcomes, as well as collaborating with credible non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
