Ramie fi ber felt (RF) was modi fi ed by NaClO 2 aqueous solution and then impregnated with water-based epoxy resin (WER). RF/WER transparent composite materials were prepared by lamination hot pressing process. The composite materials ’ color difference, transmittance, haze, density, water absorption, and mechanical properties were determined to assess the effects of NaClO 2 treatment and the number of ramie fi ber layers on the properties of the prepared composites. The results showed signi fi cantly improved optical and mechanical properties of the RF/WER transparent composites after NaClO 2 treatment. With the increase of ramie fi ber layers, the composites ’ whiteness, transmittance, and water absorption decreased while the haze increased. For material with three layers, the optical trans-mittance in the visible light region was 82%, and the haze was 96%, indicating the material has both high transmittance and high haze characteristics. The tensile strength increases with the increase of the number of layers, and the tensile strength of the composite with six layers is 243 MPa. This study broadens the scope of application of ramie fi ber as a new option for home decoration materials.","PeriodicalId":16952,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Renewable Materials","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69858466","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"材料科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Glycerol, while initially added to control the reaction temperature, was used as a plasticizer yielding flexible biofoams presenting the same water repellant character that the equivalent rigid foams. Acetaldehyde was used as the cross-linking agent instead of formaldehyde, as it showed a better performance with the esterified tannin. The compression results showed a significant decrease of the Modulus of Elasticity (MOE) of the flexible foams in relation to that of the rigid foams, confirming their flexible character. The lauryland palmitoyl-esterified biofoams presented similar mechanical properties, while the oleyl-esterified biofoam presented different mechanical and morphological result not really showing the expected flexibility. Both the esterified rigid and flexible tannin-based biofoams showed good water resistance and their sessile drop contact angle analysis as a function of time confirmed this characteristic. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) analysis showed the flexible foams to present a higher proportion of closed cells than the rigid foams. Conversely, the cells depth of the flexible foams was lower than that of the rigid foam. As regards their thermal resistance, the flexible foams showed a slight loss of mass compared to the rigid ones without glycerol. Both types of foams presented much lower surface friability of non-esterified rigid foams.","PeriodicalId":16952,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Renewable Materials","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69860530","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"材料科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, antibacterial microcapsules were fabricated using Ginkgo biloba essential oil (GBEO) as core material and chitosan and type B gelatin biopolymer as capsule materials. These antibacterial microcapsules were then modified with green-synthesized Ag NPs, blended into the biopolymer polylactic acid (PLA), and finally formed as films. Physicochemical properties and antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) were evaluated. Results showed that the prepared antibacterial PLA films exhibited excellent antibacterial activity against foodborne pathogens. Its TVC exceeded the limit value of 7 log CFU/g at 7 days compared with the 5 days of pure PLA films. Therefore, these films can extend the shelf life of grass carp fillets by 2–3 days under refrigeration.","PeriodicalId":16952,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Renewable Materials","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135912806","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"材料科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Hence, producing functional bio-based plasticizers via exploiting clean and reusable resources meets the satisfaction of current demands. In this study, flame-retardant rubber seed oil-based plasticize (FRP) was prepared via epoxidation reaction and ring opening addition reactions, which was used as a flame-resistant plasticizer for polyvinyl chloride to replace petroleum-based phthalate plasticizer. When DOP was replaced with FRP, the torque of PVC blends increased from 11.4 to 18.4 N⋅m, the LOI value increased from 24.3% for PVC-FRP-0% to 33.1% for PVC-FRP-20. The THR value diminished from 39 MJ/m (pertaining to PVC-FRC-0) to 22 MJ/m Tg increased from 23°C to 47°C, the weight loss of plasticized PVC blends significantly reduced from 22.6% to 2.8% in leaching tests. The study provided a new way to prepare flame retardant plasticizer using rubber seed oil as raw material.","PeriodicalId":16952,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Renewable Materials","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69848447","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"材料科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
