Many different drive circuits were tested and their limitations were studied. A three-phase MOSFET inverter was built and tested with an induction motor pump as a load. The inverter uses a pulsewidth-modulation technique to minimize the harmonic contents of the output waveform. A special purpose IC, HEF 4752, is used as a controller. The system consists of several parallel autonomous power modules with load current sharing and 'n+1' redundancy. Each module contains two parallel double-output current-mode controlled forward converters with integrated output filter inductors. Primary attention is focused on the multiwinding inductor element. It is noted that outside plant personnel are becoming familiar with compression methods and applying them to such areas as utility steel strand grounding, towers, and grounding electrodes as a replacement for mechanical and exothermic connections. Compression devices are emerging to offer attractive alternatives for other mechanical and soldered joint applications such as cable shielding, pedestals, cable vaults, and lightning protection. A model of the electrochemical processes of both creep and nodular types of post seal corrosion is presented. A recently developed vulcanized rubber post seal and representative generic mechanical compression and epoxy post seals are described. The apparatus and test parameters including a complete listing of all variables examined are detailed. Generalized and specific results of a comparative testing program are discussed for each of the three seal types. Based on the test results, an optimized configuration for each seal type is presented. The most common source in a central office, -48 V, although attractive from an availability point, cannot provide sufficient voltage to overcome the loop voltage drop in 12000 feet of 22-gauge, 1100-pair cable at 75 A. Voltages such as 130 V can supply sufficient voltage to overcome the loop voltage drop since the current would be less for the same power in the transmission path. However, the using location is designed to operate with a voltage of -48 V, and DC-to-DC converters are needed to convert the voltage to -48 V. It is concluded that these types of converters are technically feasible (130 V to -48 V at 75 A) and could be obtained from power supply manufacturers. However, other technical factors, raise some concerns as to the practicality of powering remote locations from the central office.
