However, its performance greatly depends upon shape and size of window employed. Longer windows give good frequency resolution while shorter windows give good time resolution. In this paper, we present a novel method to improve the resolution of short time Fourier transform by combining short time Fourier transforms of different window lengths.","PeriodicalId":167049,"journal":{"name":"2011 7th International Conference on Emerging Technologies","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122591410","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These collections include dictionaries, thesauri, corpora, images, audio and video resources. The increased availability of these datasets brought about by advances and adaptations of the Internet and increased digitisation of humanities data resources, poses new challenges for humanities researchers. Many of these challenges are related to data access and usage and include security, integrity, interoperability, information retrieval, sharing, licensing and copyright. The JISC-funded project Enhancing Repositories for Language and Literature Research (ENROLLER; https://www.enroller.org.uk) is addressing these issues through development of a targeted e-Research environment. A key component of this effort is in supporting large-scale analysis of diverse language and literature data sets. To this end, this paper presents the application of the MapReduce algorithm, that supports information retrieval and linguistic analysis on those datasets. In particular, we describe how MapReduce is used to provide advanced bulk search capabilities exploiting a range of high performance computing resources including the UK National Grid Service (www.ngs.ac.uk) and ScotGrid (www.scotgrid.ac.uk) to offer a step change in the kinds of research that can be undertaken by this community. We also present performance analysis results based on the application of these systems.","PeriodicalId":167049,"journal":{"name":"2011 7th International Conference on Emerging Technologies","volume":"130 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124240301","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The autocorrelation minimization based channel shortening algorithms are investigated in this paper. If a white signal is input to a filter having a short span, the autocorrelation introduced in the output signal is small. The SAM algorithm expects that the reverse might also be true. Therefore, it performs channel shortening by minimizing the sum-squared autocorrelation of the output of the channel for a range of lags. It is shown that minimizing the autocorrelation of the channel output as in SAM is not equivalent to condensing the channel in a contagious window. As long as the ADSL channels are concerned, identical channel shortening can be achieved by using a single autocorrelation in the cost function. Using a range of autocorrelations is unintelligent and overkill. Furthermore, this single autocorrelation is not specific to any particular value of lag. This finding not only reduces the computational complexity of SAM as in SLAM but also serves as an insight into the dynamics of the autocorrelation based channel shortening algorithms. The algorithm is named Any Lag Autocorrelation Minimization (ALAM). The simulations support the ideas presented in the paper. The reasons behind the diverging behavior of autocorrelation based algorithms to shorten the ADSL channels are also elaborated. The paper also serves to identify lags which can be minimized in the true sense of channel shortening. It is found that these lag values are not driven by the nature of the impulse response of the underlying channel. They always try to shorten a channel around its mid point. Therefore, it is conjectured that if the channel has its mass of energy around its mid point, ALAM is flexible and will successfully shorten it to different desired window lengths without any diverging behavior. On the other hand, SAM, which blindly minimizes all of the channel taps in its cost function, is expected to fail in such situations. The failure will come in the form of no shortening at all OR divergence from the optimal point.","PeriodicalId":167049,"journal":{"name":"2011 7th International Conference on Emerging Technologies","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127997456","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, a new retinal vasculature segmentation algorithm is proposed based on mathematical morphology, principal curvature, non-maximal suppression and hysteresis thresholding based morphological reconstruction. The blood vessels are enhanced by applying the top-hat transformation and computation of maximum principal curvature at multiple scales. Vessel centerlines are then obtained by non-maximal suppression followed by adapted hysteresis thresholding and morphological reconstruction. The principal curvature image is double thresholded and morphologically reconstructed to generate the vessel skeleton map which is the aggregate threshold for region growing of detected vessel centerlines to obtain the segmented retinal vasculature. The proposed method is evaluated using the images of two publicly available databases, the DRIVE database and the STARE database. Achieved average accuracy for DRIVE and STARE is 0.9419 and 0.9434 respectively. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is comparable with other approaches in accuracy, sensitivity and specificity.","PeriodicalId":167049,"journal":{"name":"2011 7th International Conference on Emerging Technologies","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133417958","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, when applied indiscriminately, thread squashing and re-execution can incur significant overhead and TLS may result in performance degradation compared to sequential code. A thorough analysis of code for potentially available parallelism is crucial for choosing between speculative or non-speculative execution. In this paper, we present the outcome of an empirical study on a collection of sequential applications to determine what type of parallelism is available and whether it is beneficial to use TLS. We developed a tool, named SeekBin, which observes Java classes at load time for opportunities of parallelism in the bytecode. SeekBin uses profiler feedback and emits data about actually called methods only, which can be used to determine suitability of applying TLS.","PeriodicalId":167049,"journal":{"name":"2011 7th International Conference on Emerging Technologies","volume":"70 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131919132","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This requires a network reservation, mechanism for the large data transfer requests. It is possible that some network capacity is available even after fulfilling the capacity requirements of the requests. The sharing of the available network capacity, called residual capacity, has direct impact on the actual time taken to serve a request. In this paper, we propose a novel weighted capacity sharing model to predict the performance of the deadline-constrained data transfers. A weighted sharing scheme is desirable since a request with higher capacity requirement should get higher share of the residual capacity than that of a request with lower capacity requirement in order to reduce its transfer time. We calculate the blocking probabilities and mean flow time using our scheme and compare the results with an existing scheme of equal residual capacity sharing. The results show that weighted-sharing scheme is better than equal capacity-sharing scheme as it reduces the mean transfer time of requests of a higher capacity requirement class. We also validate the model through simulations.","PeriodicalId":167049,"journal":{"name":"2011 7th International Conference on Emerging Technologies","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128780939","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
