The most common underground method all over the world is the longwall mining method. The increasing demand for minerals and ores and the difficult mining conditions at greater depths make the longwall mining system a good candidate in mining. The equilibrium condition is disrupted when the longwall face advances, and as a result, the surrounding rocks eventually fracture and cave. Moreover, the induced pressure due to caving or fractures of the immediate roof rocks and the tilting of the main roof exerts an excessive load on the hydraulic supports in the longwall faces. Induced disturbances of the overburden rocks must be thoroughly investigated since this will enhance our understanding of rock pressure and ground control. The main objectives of this paper are to review the importance of the longwall mining system as an exploitation method and its applications around the world. as well as the main factors affecting the stability of supports in longwall faces, especially hydraulic supports. From this study, it can be seen that the most important technical factor that affects face stability is the rate of face advance. In addition, the significant natural factors affecting the stability of workings are roof conditions and the geometry of the panel.","PeriodicalId":166670,"journal":{"name":"JES. It is imperative to investigate the temperature rise and to find effective techniques to control the heat of hydration of massive concrete. In this research, based on a segmental model test of high-rise building raft, the temperature field for the bottom, middle and top surface concrete of the raft caused by the heat of hydration were measured. Blast furnace slag cement (CEM III/A 42.5N) was used due to its lower percentage of C3A and C3S and lower surface area. The tested temperature rise curves indicated that the temperature increases quickly but diminishes gradually. The maximum temperature rises at the middle surface of the concrete reached 56oC, and the maximum temperature difference between the middle and the top surface was 15.80oC. The most extreme temperature difference between the top surface and the surrounding environmental temperature was 26.5oC. So, using slag cement controlled the heat of hydration of concrete leading to environmentally friendly concrete mixes.","PeriodicalId":166670,"journal":{"name":"JES. However, in many countries, such as Saudi Arabia (SA), considerable impediments to EV exist, including a lack of charging stations. What will happen as the future government strategy is to add a large number of charging stations in this country, and what effect will this have on the grid, particularly during the charging phase? The purpose of this research is to determine the power grid's capability in Saudi Arabia to house extra demand for EV charging. This research should aid in maintaining system stability and better planning for the future EV charging infrastructure. This paper aims to outline the effect of charging EVs on the grid and predict the possible number of charging stations that can be installed for a shopping mall parking space in Jeddah city. The data were collected from daily energy consumption and energy peak demand records from a shopping mall substation, and a total of eight EV charging scenarios were simulated. The load profile was analysed for all scenarios, and as a result, 100% and 41% charging capacities are recommended for slow and fast charging methods, respectively.","PeriodicalId":166670,"journal":{"name":"JES. Temperature variations cause a lot of distress in flexible and rigid pavement such as rutting, vertical transverse (i.e., thermal) cracking, thermal fatigue damage, blow up/buckling, in addition to generating warping stresses. Accurate detection of the surface temperature of flexible pavement is very important for pavement design analysis. This research presents a new model to estimate the temperature of flexible pavement layers under extremely high temperatures as a set of simultaneous equations. The proposed model included Clear-Sky as sub-model to estimate the solar energy of beam and diffuse radiation of the pavement surface. Ambient temperature was calculated by solving the model depending on the time of the day. The proposed model was validated via experimental data collected from one-year measurements at instrumented pavement section in New Sohag, Egypt. The asphalt surface temperatures were measured for summer, winter solstices and vernal and autumnal equinoxes. It was found that the model provides reasonable estimates compared to the experimental data. The proposed model is deemed appropriate for estimating pavement layers temperature in hot regions.","PeriodicalId":166670,"journal":{"name":"JES. Also, pipelines are subjected to additional stresses transmitted by the settlement of the loose sand soil which increases stresses and displacements in the pipes and eventually leads to breakage. Therefore, using micro-piles to improve soil below the pipeline is important. Praxis 3D numerical analysis software was used to investigate numerically the improvement of soil behaviour below pipeline Micro-piles installed as a cross piles configuration below pipeline and as a confining setup. Parameters studied are piles spacing, piles diameter, length, and effect of soil wetting. The pipeline was subjected to surface loads from a fully loaded truck. Here comes the challenge facing the state, including the engineering bodies, to determine the danger level to the residents’ lives, and to develop solutions and priorities for facing risks including earthquakes. The large size of slums necessitates the development of a simplified way for classifying structures in terms of their seismic resistance. This research proposes a simplified method to estimate the earthquake loads to be used for estimating the ability of such buildings to withstand the main and seismic loads, allowing the determination of the initial degree of danger on its condition. The proposed guideline ignores the effect of participation of all columns in resisting earthquake loads, especially in the absence of lateral stiffness members, which is the general condition of slums and focuses on the external columns only that are the most exposed to the seismic load. Also, this method considers only the resulting seismic vertical reactions. The validity of the proposed method was tested experimentally and analytically, while its accuracy was verified through a field study by comparing the results of its application on two buildings in Sharika, Egypt. Numerical models for these buildings were built to determine their resistance under seismic loads. The study concluded how to predict the risks affecting such buildings using a simple process. This could be used to establish controls to replanning the buildings of existing slum cities to ensure the safety or at least reduce the risk of collapses against moderate earthquakes.","PeriodicalId":166670,"journal":{"name":"JES.
