Writing it gave me an opportunity to gather my thoughts about not only the deep fear and constraint I had lived with personally over the previous 18 months, but also challenged me to rethink the social consequences of the inequalities that are built into our world. I start from a position that assumes that the political and economic context in which we live influences not only our thinking and emotional life, but also our practice. As Foulkes explained many times, and he had life experiences to confirm this theory, ‘the individual is social to the core’ (1948). This means that I see a dialectical association between the external world in which I live and my internal sense-making psychic world. I notice that this link often gets missed. I suggest that what we might be taking through the portal of the pandemic will depend on our economic system, its connection to political structures, and how these contextual often ‘out-of-sight’ forces impact our lives concretely and psychically while framing our capacity to think about the situation we find ourselves in. Even though it is difficult to know what the long-term effects might be, I have found exploring these dilemmas in the social context of an on-going Larger Group gives me a form of comfort that enables me to expand my thinking and remain conscious in the face of unrelenting and frightening socio-political change. I understand the Larger Group as a place where it is possible to witness these social and political forces as they manifest themselves in the group and to explore how they connect to those that arise from my family recognizing that it is not a large Small Group but, from de Maré’s perspective, operates as an as-if society that generates different meanings. As de Maré often said,‘It is important to talk’. I have learned that talking with others in these settings, helps me to break through into new language to escribe my experience.","PeriodicalId":166668,"journal":{"name":"Group Analysis","volume":"124 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134913036","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Foulkes and Wilfred Abse (1915– 2005), a Welsh psychiatrist, group analyst and an old colleague of Foulkes in Northfield where they worked together for three months in 1944 (Harrison and Clarke, 1992: 700) is a fascinating read. Initiated by Abse who asked Foulkes for a comment on a forthcoming presentation of his, it is not only a hallmark of professional exchange and a deeply felt friendship, but also a remarkable account of the last period of Foulkes’ professional career as a group analyst. As such, it not only offers valuable insights into the origins of group analysis but also provides an overview of its theoretical and clinical advances at the beginning of the 1970s. Moreover, it allows a fleeting glimpse of the group analytic community in London at the time. It is well known that in the 1960s, Foulkes published a collection of papers on the history of group analysis since its inception and later on (Foulkes, 1964). Regarding its origins he wrote: ‘In the mid-twenties, I came across one or two papers by Trigant Burrow which must have made a deep impression on me as they put the idea of group analysis as a form of treatment into my mind’ (Foulkes, 1984: 13)1. However, apart from Burrow, Foulkes emphasized that at the time, there were other influences in the air’ (Foulkes, 1984: 13) which had an impact on his thinking, namely a number of plays from the contemporary theatre; for instance Six Characters in Search of an Author by Pirandello, and Maxim Gorki’s play on The Lower Depths (NachtAsyl) (Foulkes, 1984: 13)’ which he remarked was ‘a play without a hero, a leaderless group on the stage driven by strong anonymous forces (ibid)’. It was this play that made him wonder ‘about the pathogenic and therapeutic power of the theatre and of everyday life’ 1188699 GAQ0010.1177/05333164231188699Group AnalysisNitzgen: Response to Martin Roth article-commentary2023","PeriodicalId":166668,"journal":{"name":"Group Analysis","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129267058","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Chat rapidly became an alternative channel of communication and a forum for commentary, criticism and challenge to the primary spoken discourse of the group and became a home and a vehicle for disaffected and dissident voices, particularly those marginalized according to race, class and gender. Controversy has developed as various objections have been raised against Chat being allowed in GASi online Large Groups. In so far as Chat has become a place for marginalized and subaltern voices to speak and be ‘heard’, then closing it becomes a praxis of silencing and further institutionalizing racism, patriarchy and class oppression.","PeriodicalId":166668,"journal":{"name":"Group Analysis","volume":"167 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115266222","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Stress and anxiety originate from a threat, and chronic exposure to stressors results in feeling overwhelmed. When the coping strategies are not effective in a certain situation, the person might demonstrate conditioned reactions like fight, flight, or freeze. Somatic Experiencing (SE) is a resiliency-based approach that focuses on these conditioned responses of the nervous system to support the innate regulatory capacity of the body through interoceptive awareness and bodily sensations. This study aims to increase resiliency factors through a SE-based group counselling process. Two groups, an intervention and control group, each consisting of nine individuals, attended a group process for eight weeks. In addition to these groups, a waitlist control group was formed consisting of 31 people. In addition to pre-and-post individual interviews, The COPE-Revised and the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale were administered to both experiment groups and the waitlist control group. An ANCOVA analysis found that the group process was statistically significant for both reducing stress and developing coping strategies. Furthermore, as a result of the qualitative content analysis of the interviews, five themes emerged: hope, universality, cohesiveness, insight, and interpersonal output (new behaviour).","PeriodicalId":166668,"journal":{"name":"Group Analysis","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133942902","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Something to be read in one’s spare time. Unfortunately, this leaves the tree without roots. The continuing debate between the group analytic approach and that of the Tavistock is an obvious example of a controversy deeply embedded in the past. Attempts to overcome the division have to recognize the different traditions or they are likely to fail. Exploring the history of group therapies both offers new perspectives and an understanding of the social trajectory in which we are embedded, as well as an opportunity to review preconceptions about the actors. In responding to Christine Vickers’ glimpse into our controversial past (Vickers, 2023) I will take up two issues, the neglected role of Edward Glover at the British Psycho-Analytical Society and the uncertainties around the development of group practice in the British Army. At the heart of the conflict at the British Psycho-Analytical Society was the concern to preserve an untainted theory against heresy. As Eric Rayner has observed practitioners who use psychoanalysis in the service of others can be accused of watering it down, or ‘obscuring, analytic essentials, whilst those who maintain a “pure” position may be accused of “sterile self-absorption” (Rayner, 1996: 259–60)’. Those who worked in the British Army found themselves facing practical issues that enforced solutions that were psychoanalytically informed, but employed techniques derived from other schools of thought. Thomas Kuhn has ably demonstrated how we cling on to received wisdom in the face of overwhelming evidence, until a 1188701 GAQ0010.1177/05333164231188701Group AnalysisHarrison: Response to Vickers research-article2023","PeriodicalId":166668,"journal":{"name":"Group Analysis","volume":"117 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127324034","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
