The centralised home location register (HLR) in GSM can be a potential bottleneck. Most users have regular calling and mobility patterns (or profiles) which can be used to reduce database accesses. Selective replication of the user mobility profiles (SRP) at the source-MSC/VLR can reduce HLR queries. Using GSM as the reference, this paper studies the cost of replicating user mobility profiles and compares its performance with caching the VLR number. It is shown that SRP performs better for a mobile which has a higher mobility rate compared to the incoming call rate from a switch. The paper also suggests a combined scheme with better overall performance.","PeriodicalId":166667,"journal":{"name":"1997 IEEE International Conference on Personal Wireless Communications (Cat. As most of these multiple-access protocols are designed for specific applications (such as telephony) and analyzed accordingly, the analysis results can not always be adapted to situations where each user has a different behavior. Wireless MAC protocols for data communication are not straightforward to analyse. To quickly make a reliable judgement of the usability of a MAC protocol for specific situations, we designed a simulator that makes it simple to implement the protocol and test it in different configurations and with differently behaving users. Our simulator generates a large amount of quantitative performance information that can be processed with standard graph drawing tools and an integrated trace analyzer.","PeriodicalId":166667,"journal":{"name":"1997 IEEE International Conference on Personal Wireless Communications (Cat. We describe the implementation of an interworking system for CDMA wireless data services between the mobile subscriber with a data terminal and the public subscriber in the public switched telephone network (PSTN) with a personal computer or G3 facsimile terminal. This module can be used to make a search of information, which is included in the database of a data network. To adapt this module for the mobile communication network, we suggested the use of a system structure in parallel with the mobile switching system in order to reduce the influence of the network configuration. This system can be used to provide an end to end data communication service and a means of searching for information in databases.","PeriodicalId":166667,"journal":{"name":"1997 IEEE International Conference on Personal Wireless Communications (Cat. The characteristics of the wideband CDMA system (IS-665), which attracts much attention as one of the next generation PCS (personal communication service) systems, were evaluated. These are PCS standards which are aimed, at high-quality voice transmission equivalent to PSTN, radio data transmission and packet radio transmission. The outdoor field trial results are discussed. The field trial was carried out at a carrier frequency of 2 GHz, a transmission output of 29 dBm and by a three-sector system. The area evaluated under the microcell service experiment was within a radius of about 0.5 miles either in an urban or suburban area. As the voice coding method, 32 kbps ADPCM voice coding featuring good transmission characteristics in a poor radio propagation environment was adopted. As a result of characteristic evaluation trials in the actual environment, it has been shown that the wideband CDMA system is a new promising PCS system and is also favorable for FPLMTS and IMT-2000.","PeriodicalId":166667,"journal":{"name":"1997 IEEE International Conference on Personal Wireless Communications (Cat. The performance of this protocol is studied through simulation for a constant probability retransmission control scheme. For a relatively small ratio of number of active users to the number of channels, a system throughput as large as 90% can be achieved with tolerable average voice message delay and acceptable voice packet dropping probability. The effects of the different system variables on the performance parameters, namely, normalized steady state system throughput, average voice message delay, average data message delay and voice packet dropping probability, have been investigated. Like S-ALOHA such a protocol would be easy to implement.","PeriodicalId":166667,"journal":{"name":"1997 IEEE International Conference on Personal Wireless Communications (Cat. This paper outlines a prototype system capable of delivering real time stock (share) price information from Internet based stock price servers to mobile subscribers equipped with GSM cellular terminals. The prototype system is based upon a gateway PC system which is connected to both the Internet and also the GSM cellular network. The system allows a subscriber to the service to receive updates on stock prices at desired intervals throughout the day, or on demand, primarily by means of short messages delivered to their GSM mobile phone. In addition to this primary delivery mechanism, a number of enhanced delivery mechanism have also been designed into the system based around a \"dial up\" interactive voice response (IVR) system on the gateway PC platform. These allow a subscriber to get an immediate update, by a short message or by a spoken prompt, of some/all of his stock portfolio by dialling up and interacting with the IVR functionality in the system server.","PeriodicalId":166667,"journal":{"name":"1997 IEEE International Conference on Personal Wireless Communications (Cat. In this method, the received 16-QAM signal is processed in two paths; one path transforms the received signal into a 12-PSK signal, and the other detects the envelope of the received signal. Using an envelope detector and a window detector, we extract the time period that the 16-QAM signal causing phase jitter exists. We recover the carrier phase from the 12-PSK signal using a digital phase locked loop (PLL) which is controlled by the window detector output. By this method, the data pattern-related noise of the conventional times-four carrier recovery method is entirely eliminated. We implement an experimental model to examine the proposed method.","PeriodicalId":166667,"journal":{"name":"1997 IEEE International Conference on Personal Wireless Communications (Cat. The design of the WLL system is much simpler than that of a mobile system because no handoff occurs in a fixed-to-fixed link. This paper describes the hardware design and implementation of base station receiver for code division multiple access (CDMA) WLL system proposed by Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI). This base station demodulator module of the WLL system is implemented by hardware chips, such as a digital signal processor (DSP), erasable programmable logic device (EPLD), and a field programmable gate array (FPGA). Timing simulation of the implemented system is operated using the ALTERA MAXPLUS tool. The basic hardware modules of the base station receiver consist of two searchers for antenna diversity and four fingers for multipath combining. We verify the operation of the code acquisition and time tracking loop on the call test. The reconstructed speech shows a good quality in the reverse link.","PeriodicalId":166667,"journal":{"name":"1997 IEEE International Conference on Personal Wireless Communications (Cat.
