Aim: To analyze Chilean preschoolers’ oral health indicators by age, sex, socioeconomic status and urban/rural location of their school. Material and Methods: Systematic review conducted in PubMed, EMBASE, Scielo and gray literature to identify oral health epidemiological studies in Chile. We included studies with regional representativeness, published until May 2021. We requested the studies’ datasets (individual data) and conducted a reanalysis for six oral health indicators: prevalence of untreated caries, caries experience, gingivitis, malocclusions and dmft/DMFT. Sex, age, urban/rural location of their school and socioeconomic status (SES) were considered as exposure variables. We assessed the risk of bias in each study and synthesized the oral health results for each of them. Differences between each indicator and explanatory variables were analyzed through Fisher’s exact test. Adjusted prevalence ratios were estimated through Poisson regression. Results: We selected nine studies and had access to five individual-level study datasets. Differences were observed in caries and gingivitis according to age, SES and rurality in most of the studies, observing highest differences for low SES in 2009 (PR caries experience = 2.68; PR untreated caries = 2.90). No differences were observed for SES nor rurality for malocclusions. Conclusion: A reduction of indicators was not observed over the years. SES has remained as a social determinant of oral health in preschoolers in Chile.","PeriodicalId":16625,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Oral Research","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89183398","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Objective: The aim of our systematic review is to study the impact of oral health on the quality of life of the geriatric patient in different contexts of autonomy. Material and Methods: A systematic literature review was carried out of which the selection of articles, with publication date between 2008 and 2020 was conducted through computer platforms. The studies were analyzed and evaluated respecting the previously established inclusion criteria. The review corpus consisted of 16 articles, which presented methodological quality. Results: Oral health has an impact on the quality of life of the elderly, both in the context of institutionalization and at a community level. Oral health has an effect on the quality of life of the elderly, namely in the dimensions of physical pain, physical disability, psychological discomfort, functional limitation, psychological and social disability. The higher the level of dependency the lower the oral health which has the greatest impact on quality of life. The presence of periodontitis, dental caries, edentulism, oral lesions and unsuitable dental prostheses result in a worse perception of quality of life. Conclusion: The evidence found in this study reveals that the state of oral health among the elderly influences their quality of life, regardless of the context of autonomy, indicating the need for oral health policies aimed at this specific population.","PeriodicalId":16625,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Oral Research","volume":"82 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"72419512","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Guided bone regeneration is one of them; however, the literature is diverse and includes different study designs, which makes it difficult to synthesize results. Objective: To analyze the general technical characteristics, clinical results, and complications of vertical bone augmentation performed with guided bone regeneration in humans. Material and Methods: This scoping review was based on the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. A search was performed in the Pubmed, Scielo, and Worldcat databases. Papers published from 1990 to April 2020 were included in the study. Research articles not conducted in humans or published in languages other than English and Spanish were excluded. Title and abstract were screened by two reviewers, then full studies were extracted, and data tabulated. Results: 89 studies were included. The highest percentage reported having obtained a vertical bone increase of less than 5 mm and having used non-resorbable membranes. The most frequent type of graft is autogenous and combinations of grafts, the most common being autogenous with xenograft. All studies that reported bone stability of implants in regenerated bone were favorable, as was implant survival, reporting values between 83.8% and 100%. Membrane exposure is the most frequently reported complication, followed by infection or abscesses, and tissue dehiscence. Conclusion: Vertical bone regeneration is a reliable technique, with high predictability and low incidence of complications compared to other vertical bone augmentation techniques.","PeriodicalId":16625,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Oral Research","volume":"56 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89687840","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Material and Methods: Traumatized (n=71) and non-traumatized (n=71) teeth from 42 patients were evaluated. Each tooth underwent cold, heat, electric and oximetry tests, followed by radiographic examination and calculation of the sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV and accuracy. Results: Clinical and radiographic examination showed no alteration for the 71 teeth from the intact contralateral group. From the traumatized group, 29 teeth presented complete endodontic treatment, 17 presented periapical alterations that required endodontic treatment and 25 teeth did not present conclusive radiographic alteration. The cold test showed a significantly higher proportion of correct results, while the electric test showed a significantly lower proportion. The data showed higher accuracy for the cold, followed by oximeter and heat tests, while the electric test presented the lowest accuracy. Cold and oximeter tests proved superior over the electric and heat tests, while the electric test showed better parameters when diagnosing diseased pulp. Conclusion: Combining two pulp tests seems reasonable for improving the pulp diagnoses using both oximeter and cold or oximeter and heat tests to detect healthy pulp; or cold and electric tests to define diseased pulp.","PeriodicalId":16625,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Oral Research","volume":"14 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91190772","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Introduction: The most common reason for which a patient visits any dental setup is tooth pain. Most people in the rural population are not aware of root canal treatment therapy nor of medications that are used for tooth pain management in case of emergency. Lack of adequate knowledge of root canal therapy leads to tooth pain and swelling which lead to worsening issues. This is further complicated by self-management at home by taking clove and essential oils. Hence this study was conducted to evaluate the knowledge and awareness of the rural population of Eastern India regarding root canal therapy and medications used during tooth pain and the course of root canal treatment. Material and Methods: A pre-structured, closed-ended questionnaire was applied to patients visiting the Department of Dentistry, Fakir Mohan Medical College and Hospital, Balasore, Odisha (India). The questionnaire consisted of twenty multiple-choice questions. The questions were framed to understand the level of awareness of the sample population. The data was collected and analyzed for descriptive statistics such as mean and percentages. Results: 72% had firsthand experience of tooth pain at some point in time. Around 34% of the responders who had been treated in the past replied that they did not have any knowledge and awareness about root canal treatment, whereas the remaining 66% reported they had treatment done from a dentist before and were advised over the counter analgesics like paracetamol and ibuprofen. The majority of the patients were unaware of root canal treatment and antibiotics used during the treatment such as metronidazole, amoxicillin, and amoxicillin-clavulanate. Conclusion: There is a lack of awareness and knowledge regarding root canal treatment and medication used during tooth pain and its course of treatment.","PeriodicalId":16625,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Oral Research","volume":"19 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88959836","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Material and Methods: A new concept for attention via teledentistry of the elderly supported by the web platform/app TEGO (Acronym for Tele-platform of Geriatric and Dental Specialties in Spanish) was developed. Priority and urgent dental care for elderly patients in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic was provided onboard a mobile dental clinic equipped with all the necessary conventional dental care facilities as well as state-of-the-art digital technology. Dental care was carried out in five cities of Chile. For the study, 135 elderly patients were treated. The tele-dental care model includes visit-appointment and remote interconsultation with a staff of specialists. To evaluate patient satisfaction aspects, regarding the service / care provided, a user satisfaction survey was applied. Results: A total of 68 questionnaires were completed by patients. The results showed high levels of patients’ satisfaction after the priority or urgent dental care, which reached above 75% in all dimensions of the questionnaire (Access to dental care, user treatment, platform, recommendation). Conclusion: The generation of a technological eco-system for teledentistry can provide a series of important advantages in the attention of elderly patients, by optimizing the dental care coverage by different specialists who can provide attention to a population that has limited or no access to them.","PeriodicalId":16625,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Oral Research","volume":"6 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87549492","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
