The additional objectives of adaptive fault-resistance and resource management need new metrics that are dynamically implementable. The authors present rationale/needs of metrics and an approach to their development and usage. But any single system image has a boundary: Within it one perceives unity; outside it there is multiplicity. So many single system images can co-exist in one system. The types of single systems images can be arranged in a hierarchy, ranging from application-level through operating system to hardware. This research has practical value since applications primarily intended for distributed memory, EUI based message passing systems can now port to shared memory architectures, such as the IBM Power Visualization System (PVS). This implementation is shown to be efficient for message passing applications even when an application's performance is largely a function of message passing latency. The semantics of the software library is such that ports can be done with little or no modifications to the user's existing application. Given a p-processor massively parallel computer, the organization allows a maximum of p retrievals to be performed concurrently and thus achieves an approximate speed up of p in the best case. The index structure is based on the multi-B-tree index structure. It is compatible with current automatic retrieval and query processing techniques. It is also compatible with a variety of file organizations. In addition to an indexed attribute which the authors refer to as primary attribute, a secondary attribute can be included in the index as no additional cost. Updates are achieved with a high degree of efficiency as well. The parallel organization of a multi-B-tree index improves considerably the performance of the index. The authors focus on the problem of fast recovery after a node crash. The approach is mainly based on minimizing the number of log records to be retrieved. This is achieved by periodically discarding obsolete information in a very efficient manner without effecting the normal logging procedure. The main idea behind is that the generic Log-Service provides a high level interface to the application which allows the Log-Service itself to interpret the semantics of log records without consulting the application during run-time. The high latencies of distributed file systems (particularly wide area file systems) have only exacerbated the problem. The authors believe that file system prefetching provides an effective method for alleviating the latency bottleneck. File system prefetching requires knowledge of future file accesses. The authors are currently investigating efficient methods for accurately predicting future file activity automatically without application intervention. They have designed and implemented a system which uses past file activity to predict future file system needs. Unfortunately, object-oriented interfaces are usually only enforced and usable through language mechanisms, making it impossible for components in a large-scale distributed environment to interact. The authors are investigating the possibility of creating a runtime notion of an object's interface and allowing to that interface. The project also provides a mechanism to dynamically generate local references (proxies) to objects in different address spaces (domains) so that once this conformance is confirmed, operations can be invoked on the object in a mechanism compatible with the client's programming language.
