The structure of the biomechanical legs was presented using Simulink tools. Each leg consists of seven revolute joints (six active joints and one passive joint) connecting the torso, thigh, shank, back-foot, and front-foot. The structure of the toe-joint was discussed and a novel model representation for the joint was demonstrated. To validate the simulation model, the ground reaction forces were modeled and the location of the Zero Moment Point (ZMP) under the foot was found using two methods; ZMP-based model and the ZMP measured from the ground reaction force. The results from both methods were compared for a simple gait to validate the dynamic model.","PeriodicalId":163555,"journal":{"name":"2018 11th International Symposium on Mechatronics and its Applications (ISMA)","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127169761","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, the effect of applying Continuous Wave (CW) single tone jamming signal and Swept Interference jamming signal is evaluated on GNSS commercial receiver at high dynamic mode of operation. This analysis uses satellite availability, Carrier to Noise ratio (C/N0), Dilution of Precision (DOP), the percentage of solution availability, the minimum number of available satellites at different jamming power levels and position and velocity accuracy as evaluation metrics to investigate the benefits of combined GPS/GLONASS under both jamming types. The experiment was conducted using the SPIRENT GSS6700 combined with the Interference Signal Generator (ISG) to provide the desired signals to the NovAtel OEMV commercial receiver under high dynamic scenario. Results are compared with using only GPS and combined GPS/GLONASS and show a significant improvement in the availability of position solutions when using combined GPS/GLONASS under both jamming types.","PeriodicalId":163555,"journal":{"name":"2018 11th International Symposium on Mechatronics and its Applications (ISMA)","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-03-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131109904","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many technologies based on counterweight and linear springs have been widely developed, whereas the use of torsional springs is rarely discussed due to unavailability of exact mathematical manipulation to determine the required spring constants to achieve the static balance. This paper proposes the use of torsional springs for passive gravity compensation applied to a parallel kinematics mechanism. The spring constants are determined by constrained optimization approach aiming at minimizing the total potential energy of the mechanism along a prescribed trajectory within the range of motion. It is shown that the solution provides almost-statically-balanced state of the mechanism within its range of motion. This accordingly reduces the required actuation forces/torques and hence the power consumption.","PeriodicalId":163555,"journal":{"name":"2018 11th International Symposium on Mechatronics and its Applications (ISMA)","volume":"85 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-03-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115818227","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, only few numerical and experimental studies have been carried out to investigate the performance and operating conditions of their small scale counterparts. These latter present an attractive energy harvesting technique to power small electronic devices in isolated or abandoned areas and wireless sensors placed in confined and inaccessible spaces. In this study, we propose the full design, implementation, and experimental verification of a portable horizontal axis wind turbine for low power applications. The wind turbine has three blades and a rotor with a diameter of 68 cm. It comprises some commercially available but carefully-selected off-the-shelf components to ease the power generation. The nacelle is designed and 3D printed, and the shaft connecting the rotor to the gear system is manufactured with the goal to reduce the frictional losses and enhance the power generation. The experimental study includes testing and calibrating several sensors to verify the reliability of the acquired data. At this phase, the main objective is to develop a reliable in-house experimental setup and verify the consistency of the obtained measurements in terms of the rotational speed, generated voltage and current and electrical power with respect to previously-published studies. The wind tunnel experiments showed the capability of the developed wind turbine to produce 1.3 W at air speed of 7 m/s.","PeriodicalId":163555,"journal":{"name":"2018 11th International Symposium on Mechatronics and its Applications (ISMA)","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130335424","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we consider a generic model of two weakly coupled dynamical systems with communication delay, and show how noise on one system can drive large fluctuations in the other through the coupling interface. Moreover, the large fluctuation happens while the first system exhibits only small random oscillations. In the case of systems with multiple locally stable equilibria, we show how the expected time to transition between two equilibrium states scales as a function of the coupling and delay between the two systems. In addition, our results show that the probability of switching in the noise-free system scales inversely as the square of reduced noise intensity amplitude, rendering the virtual probability of switching to be an extremely rare event. Our results are confirmed using Monte Carlo simulations.","PeriodicalId":163555,"journal":{"name":"2018 11th International Symposium on Mechatronics and its Applications (ISMA)","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126925996","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to the complex nature of Nussbaum type switching functions, it is usually assumed that using the UAS strategy with certain Nussbaum functions is very computationally intensive and requires extremely powerful computation equipment due to the small step-size requirements. However, in this paper we present the implementation and verification of a universal adaptive stabilizer, which uses a Mittag-Leffler function as a Nussbaum function, and implement it on a simple microcontroller based system, i.e. the PIC24FJ128GA010 which is a focal point in this paper. The adaptive observer has proven to be capable of tracking the terminal voltage of different batteries in several separate trials. In another set of experiments, it is shown that bypassing the low-pass filter may also provide alternate ways to detect Li-ion battery terminal voltage collapse.","PeriodicalId":163555,"journal":{"name":"2018 11th International Symposium on Mechatronics and its Applications (ISMA)","volume":"195 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115658512","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Furuta Pendulum represents a testbed on which control methodology is tested because it exhibits chaotic behavior, it involves highly nonlinear dynamics, and it is underactuated. The aforementioned remarks make the control of the Furuta pendulum a nontrivial task. The SMC methodology which uses the full model of the system, applied here, is pegged against a linear state feedback control law which is based on the linearized model around the control objective. The control laws are tested in a simulated environment in which external disturbances are injected, and the performance of the approaches is then compared.","PeriodicalId":163555,"journal":{"name":"2018 11th International Symposium on Mechatronics and its Applications (ISMA)","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114865410","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Good knowledge of such models enable the design of controllers for AUVs to perform path following or trajectory tracking tasks. The modeling process takes into account the primary hydrodynamic phenomena that affect the vehicle, including drag, restoring forces, and added inertia. Quaternions are employed to describe the attitude of the vehicle to avoid the singularity associated with the Euler angles based formulation. The finite element analysis package ANSYS is used to identify the drag and added inertia parameters that affect the vehicle. The approach taken in the system identification task yields results that match well with published analytical and empirical results.","PeriodicalId":163555,"journal":{"name":"2018 11th International Symposium on Mechatronics and its Applications (ISMA)","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133446823","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
