Midwives are in a unique position to facilitate choice throughout pregnancy and childbirth as they have had the education and training and skills required to provide safe, kind and effective care. They must also keep their skills, knowledge and competence up to date to maintain their registration, through revalidating with the NMC every three years.","PeriodicalId":163461,"journal":{"name":"The Student Midwife","volume":"94 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141841372","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite a requirement for midwives to be person-centred and to advocate for care that optimises physiological labour, this appears to be a factor not yet considered. An awareness of the effect wearing a hospital gown has on the birthing person’s wellbeing will allow midwives to support the person’s autonomy and empower choice and control.
