In the head and neck region, schwannomas are often encountered as acoustic neuromas. A nasal septal mass in a 65-year-old male patient was resected en-bloc which was reported to be a schwannoma. No recurrence was observed in the fourth postoperative year. In conclusion, although rarely encountered, nasal septal schwannoma should be considered in the differential diagnosis of nasal masses. Even though total excision of the mass will be sufficient for the prevention of recurrence, the tumor should be sent to pathology for a definite histopathological diagnosis. Methods: Prick tests of the 1618 patients diagnosed with allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis, allergic conjunctivitis between January 2003 and May 2005 were included in the study. In epidermal skin prick test, sensitization to 21 allergens including trees, grasses, weeds, fungus, epithelium-hair, house dust and mites, latex, and food were evaluated. Results: Positive prick test results were obtained in 565 (34.9%) of 1618 patient. Methods: Retrospective analysis of spiral computed tomography scanning of paranasal sinuses of 218 patients diagnosed as acute/chronic sinusitis was performed. Bilateral sphenoid sinuses were evaluated as if a single sinus, septa of this sinus were evaluated in terms of number and configuration. Besides rates of optic nerve and internal carotid artery protrusions were determined. Results: A total of 5 types of septal variations were detected. A single complete septum (n=132; 60.5%), a single incomplete septum (n=66; 30.2%), double septum (complete + incomplete, n=6; 2.7%), two complete septa (n=9; 4.1%), and sphenoid sinuses without septum (n=5; 2.2%) were identified. Sixty-four percent of single septum was located in midline, while other types were found immediately right or left side of the midline. Besides, protrusions of optic nerve and internal carotid artery were detected in 39 (17.8%) and 61 (27.9%) cases, respectively. Yontem: Klinigimize basvuran ve efuzyonlu otitis media tanisi konan 64 hasta calismaya alindi. Calisma grubuna dâhil edilen 33 hastaya antibiyotik, dekonjestan ve N-asetilsistein, kontrol grubuna ise sadece antibiyotik ve dekonjestan uygulandi. Her iki grup, dusuk frekansli prob (226 Hz) cihazi ile tedaviden once ve tedaviden bir ay, uc ay ve 6 ay sonra incelendi. Hastalarin timpanometrik ve saf ton odyometrik muayeneleri yapildi. Bulgular: Birinci ayin sonunda, calisma ve kontrol gruplarinda sol ve sag kulak iyilesme oranlari sirasiyla yuzde %66 ve %72'ye karsilik %13 ve %22 idi. Altinci ayda, sol ve sag kulak icin calisma grubu iyilesme oranlari sirasiyla %91 ve %94 iken, kontrol grubunda bu oranlar %48 ve % %55 olarak bulundu. Sonuc: N-asetilsistein, effuzyonlu orta kulak iltihabi tedavisinde kullanilabilir. Ünal","doi":"10.2399/JMU.2013003003","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.2399/JMU.2013003003","url":null,"abstract":"Objective: To determine whether specific allergens induce specific symptoms or not, and whether symptoms and the severity of the symptoms change in the parallel with the increase in the duration of allergic rhinitis or not. Methods: This trial was conducted through retrospective screening of the data forms of patients who had presented to our ENT-Allergy Unit with allergic symptoms, and diagnosed as allergic rhinitis based on the history, examination and prick test or serum specific IgE results. Results: A total of 235 patients were enrolled in the trial. Nasal discharge and postnasal drip were significantly less common in tree allergies, itching and watering of the eyes were more common in grass allergies. Redness in the eyes was significantly less common in weed allergies. Nasal discharge was significantly less common in allergy against animal epithelium and hair. Sneezing and itching/watering of the eyes were significantly less, while hyposmia was more frequently seen in house dust-mite allergies. Comparison of the duration of allergic rhinitis with the frequency of symptoms revealed a statistically significant increase in hyposmia and redness in the eyes in seasonal allergic rhinitis, parallel to the increase in the duration of allergic rhinitis. Patients often experience annoying symptoms, mood disorders, decreased work productivity and even loss of work. In pediatric patients undiagnosed or untreated/undertreated AR may be related with learning difficulties which may have an important impact on community’s present and future life. AR medication, health care utilization, loss of productivity and work is also related with a cost which is also important for patients, their families and society’s economic status. All these factors rendered the disease a social aspect.
