As a precursor of ozone and secondary organic aerosol, VOCs effected on climate change, air quality degradation, and human health. In this study, we used a real-time monitoring device of proton transfer reaction-time of flight-mass spectrometer (PTR-ToF-Ms) on board a mobile laboratory to measure the concentration on the Paju National Publishing Complex from September 9 to September 11, 2021. Mobile measurement found that dominant species of VOCs in the Paju National Publishing Complex are investigated with toluene (22.51 ± 2.14%), methanol (19.04 ± 0.96%), and acetone (16.39 ± 0.61%). Temporal and spatial distributions of VOCs on Sep. 9 (M6), Sep. 10 (M8), and Sep. 11 (M15) cases showed mostly high concentrations. Moreover, heatmap analysis suggested a high pollution area near the printing industry. Based on the characteristics of VOCs distribution, it is conceivable that small-scale industry emission control could lead to regional air quality improvement.","PeriodicalId":16269,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Korean Society for Atmospheric Environment","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2022-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43141432","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, we quantitatively evaluated the major drivers (meteorology, foreign emissions, and domestic emissions) of which changes led to change of PM2.5 concentrations in South Korea during the PM2.5 SMP periods (S1, Dec. 2019 - Mar. 2020;S2, Dec. 2020 - Mar. 2021;S3, Dec. 2021 - Mar. 2022) based on observational data and Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) simulation results. The nation-wide period mean PM2.5 concentration in S1, S2, and S3 decreased by 8.7, 9.1, and 10.1 μg/m3 compared to that during Dec. 2018 - Mar. 2019. Results show that anthropogenic emission reductions in Northeast Asia decreased the PM2.5 concentration by 5.9, 5.5, and 8.8 μg/m3 respectively during S1 - S3. Note that the effect of the regional emission reduction includes not only domestic emission reduction but also reductions in foreign emission impact. The combined impact of meteorology and foreign emission changes explained 65%, 61% of the total PM2.5 decreases over South Korea and the Seoul Metropolitan Area (SMA) respectively during the S1 - S3. Consequently, domestic emission reductions including governmental air quality management plans (i.e., the PM2.5 SMP) and socioeconomic changes (i.e., COVID-19 outbreak) led to PM2.5 concentration decrease in South Korea by 35% during the periods. Among seventeen provinces in South Korea, the impacts of domestic emission reduction on the PM2.5 concentration decreases were as high as 39% and 56% in the SMA and Chungnam where the major emission sources such as transportation, power generation facilities, and industrial complex locate and where the PM2.5 SMP measures were probably penetrated. It implies that the effects of domestic emission controls were meaningful to lower PM2.5 concentrations during the periods. © 2022, Journal of Korean Society for Atmospheric Environment. The source region of Asian Dust were sufficiently warm and dry, which is a proper condition for dust particles to be well intruded from the surface into the air above. Asian dust transported to the Shandong peninsula in China by the northwesterly, and then flowed into the Korean peninsula by the westerly. When the fine-mode aerosol is dominated in the period before arrival of Asian dust, scattering mass efficiency of PM 10 was 5.3 m 2 /g and secondary pollutants such as sulfate, nitrate, and ammonium accountd for 50% of the total PM 10 mass concentration. During the heavy dust period, PM 10 mass concentration was maintained at 676 ~ 1,384 µg/m 3 for about 24 hours from 21 KST on March 29, 2021 which is 25 times higher than the PM 10 mass concentration before the Asian dust arrived. The light absorption coefficient in the heavy dust period was 38.5 ± 9.4 Mm - 1 , which was higher than in the period before the arrival of Asian dust (22.5 ± 10.2 Mm - 1 ) confirming the Asian dust was highly absorbing. The scattering Ångström exponent and absorption Ångström exponent were 0.29 and 2.64, respectively, which are similar to the values reported around the Asian Dust source region. Although the concentration of fine particles did not increase during HD, it is pre-sumed that the Asian Dust and fine particles were combined as the concentration of ions of anthropogenic pollutants increased to 15 µg/m 3 . Aerosol physical and optical properties were observed at 0.5 ~ 5.0 km over the Yellow Sea using an aircraft during HD. The coarse particle concentration and light scattering coefficient (545.7 Mm - 1 ) and the light absorption coefficient (23.1 Mm - 1 ) were the highest at the altitude of 0.9 km (36.5°N, 124.4°E). The scattering Ångström exponent ( - 0.067 ± 0.13) and the absorption Ångström exponent (1.3 ~ 1.9) showed distinct characteristics of dust. The vertical lapse rate of the temperature from the aircraft and the backward trajectory analysis declared that the air origins were different below and over the altitude of 1.8 km.","PeriodicalId":16269,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Korean Society for Atmospheric Environment","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2022-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46090874","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
