ITME treatment at 10 mg/mL decreased collagenase and elastase activity by 50.4% and 54.9%, respectively. In tests of human dermal fibroblast cytotoxicity, the maximum permissible level of ITME treatment was greater than 200 μg/mL. When compared to a control: i) treatment with 200 μg/mL of ITME significantly increased type I procollagen synthesis by 36.7% (p<0.05), and ii) treatment with 100 μg/mL ITME significantly decreased MMP-1 mRNA and protein expression by 23.1% and 35.3%, respectively (p< 0.01). Treatment with ITME resulted in a promotion of collagen synthesis and inhibition of collagen degradation in human dermal fibroblasts.
