The components are described with the Verilog-A language, that allows to merge the electrical and mechanical models of the system. The self-powered sensor system is composed by an energy harvesting piezoelectric generator that powers a RF transmitter. The simulations here presented compare between the case of a battery-less and battery-powered system. The results obtained with the simulation model implemented allow to show how design choices of the system change the periodicity of the transmission and the ability to recharge the battery.","PeriodicalId":161788,"journal":{"name":"2007 International Conference on Sensor Technologies and Applications (SENSORCOMM 2007)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-10-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115261532","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is presented a wireless platform operating in a smart suit, the required monitored parameters and possible monitoring scenarios. The smart suit is currently used only for one scenario, which consists of monitoring handicapped people, with all physiological data being collected and routed to a base station. We propose using the smart suit for different scenarios, such as a patient requiring emergency medical care. The goal is to use the sensorial network in the suit to monitor his health condition, so that the cardio-respiratory rhythm, body temperature, and arterial pressure data can be used to help the diagnostic. We state that this network can be used if reconfigured correctly. This paper also shows that sensors here in use should control external high resolution ADCs using hardware interruptions instead of software interruptions.","PeriodicalId":161788,"journal":{"name":"2007 International Conference on Sensor Technologies and Applications (SENSORCOMM 2007)","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-10-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127008803","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Some automatic measurement stations were strategically placed following soil homogeneity and land uses criteria. These stations include acquisition, conditioning and communication systems. The electronics are operated by a solar panel fed battery, in order to allow them to operate autonomously. The collected data are then transmitted by radio links, with link ranges up to 8 km. A standard PC is used to control the whole network and store the data. This computer also allows accessing the data via Internet for its subsequent analysis. Even though the specific application was the characterization of a reference area, in order to use it in campaigns of calibration and validation of the space mission SMOS (Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity), the system is easily extensible to other climatic measurements as well as for other zones of interest.","PeriodicalId":161788,"journal":{"name":"2007 International Conference on Sensor Technologies and Applications (SENSORCOMM 2007)","volume":"192 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-10-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126027761","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Deployment nature of sensor networks makes them vulnerable to security threats. Due to the resource limitations traditional security measures are not enough to protect sensor nodes. Research in sensor network security domains has produced several security solutions. In this paper we have observed three recently introduced security mechanisms (1) TinySec (2) MiniSec, and (3) TripleKeys. We have studied these security mechanisms in terms of packet overheads and compared the packet transmission time, average latency and energy consumption. Our comparison shows that the packet overheads in TripleKeys are lesser compared to other two schemes. We have then used the 38 bytes packet size of TripleKeys for further analysis and calculated the packet delivery ratio, latency and energy consumption. We have observed that packet delivery ratio decreases when we increase the number of nodes while latency and energy increases.","PeriodicalId":161788,"journal":{"name":"2007 International Conference on Sensor Technologies and Applications (SENSORCOMM 2007)","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-10-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124794477","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This challenging project will require the installation of thousands of photon detectors with their related electronics and calibration systems several kilometres below the sea level. The realization of this project will provide the scientific community with a very powerful instrument to study many astrophysical objects, including supernova explosions, active galactic nuclei, gamma-ray bursts and possibly also dark matter. The construction of this detector will require the solution of technological problems common to many deep submarine installations, and will help pave the way for other deep-sea research facilities. Aspects of the KM3NeT project related to deep-sea infrastructure, deployment and operation are reviewed.","PeriodicalId":161788,"journal":{"name":"2007 International Conference on Sensor Technologies and Applications (SENSORCOMM 2007)","volume":"401 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-10-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131818060","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

DUCS is adapted to the intrinsic properties of underwater environments, such as long propagation delays, low data rates and difficulty of synchronization. DUCS minimizes the proactive routing message exchange, and compensates the high propagation delays of the underwater medium using a continually adjusted timing advance combined with guard time values to minimize data loss and maintain communication quality. The simulations carried out in deep water demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme in these environments.","PeriodicalId":161788,"journal":{"name":"2007 International Conference on Sensor Technologies and Applications (SENSORCOMM 2007)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-10-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114960137","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In particular, their efficiencies and properties have been measured and discussed for years, concerning their use on computers. Today, virtual machines are increasingly considered for constraints devices such as smart cards, sensors, or personal digital assistants (pdas). These small devices have a specific hardware configuration. In particular, the memories used can be very different of the RAM (e.g. EEPROM, Flash memory, different types of RAM, etc.). Although garbage collection has been widely studied in the past decades, existing works do not take into account the specifics of such memories. This article presents a fine complexity study which takes into account the properties of the memories, especially their read and write access speeds.","PeriodicalId":161788,"journal":{"name":"2007 International Conference on Sensor Technologies and Applications (SENSORCOMM 2007)","volume":"2016 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-10-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128344800","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Felea","doi":"10.1109/SENSORCOMM.2007.71","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/SENSORCOMM.2007.71","url":null,"abstract":"In this paper, we propose OBMAC, an enhancement for medium access control (MAC) protocol based on the overhearing technique in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). In this type of networks, sensors are spatially correlated and they often sense and send the same information to the sink. Therefore, sensors waste energy in transmitting redundant data. Here, we want to find a method to reduce these redundant transmissions. Although in WSN, overhearing is often considered a cause of energy waste. In this paper, we want to show that overhearing is not always an energy waste. Moreover, it can be an efficient method to reduce redundant transmissions in sensor networks, thus diminishing energy consumption and transmission delay. Hence, the network lifetime can last longer and the sink receives events within shorter delays. We propose to apply our technique in IEEE 802.15.4, a recent standard for WSN. By simulation and experimentation, we prove that OBMAC overpasses IEEE 80215.4 in terms of energy consumption and transmission delay.","PeriodicalId":161788,"journal":{"name":"2007 International Conference on Sensor Technologies and Applications (SENSORCOMM 2007)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-10-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128898010","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
