And although such idyllic accounts tend to conceal much more difficult stories about becoming parents, nevertheless assisted reproductive technology has given new hope to many couples experiencing infertility. In the course of our work as professional psychologists, we recorded the reflections of young women between the ages of 15 and 25 who were conceived using assisted reproductive technology. To understand how the circumstances of their conception impacted their narrative identity, we adopted a clinical approach that involved having these young women share their life narratives, starting with their conception stories. \u0000Based on our clinical observations, the article explores a five-stage method for facilitating narrativity, consisting of the interview process, projective mechanisms, the creation of an autobiographical timeline, and, finally, the act of writing a life story. This multifaceted approach makes it possible to address the impact of conception stories on narrative identity from both a diachronic and synchronic perspective. Faye, Tahirou Abdoulaye","doi":"10.7202/1087100ar","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.7202/1087100ar","url":null,"abstract":"This article analyzes different approaches to establishing rural youth in irrigation areas in the Senegal \u0000River delta in the context of new hydro-agricultural developments and massive land acquisitions by agrobusiness. \u0000Government-led irrigation projects introduced in the 1960s distributed free 0.2-hectare plots of \u0000land to young workers from the surrounding region. However, in the 1980s, Senegal took a liberal turn \u0000that led to a shift from public-sector to private-sector initiatives. As a result, young workers, who often \u0000lack the means necessary to acquire land, have found it much more challenging to pursue farming in \u0000irrigation areas. Since 2006, few young farmers have acquired any of the 5,000 hectares of new irrigated \u0000farmland developed through programs based on the public-private partnership model. At the same time, \u0000agro-industry growth has provided young people with many temporary and precarious employment \u0000opportunities. \u0000 \u0000Based on surveys of farmers and agricultural workers in the Senegal River delta, we show how young \u0000people find it increasingly difficult to acquire land or secure adequate employment in the agricultural \u0000sector. A well-established \u0000pathologizing approach focused on asserting a young person’s assigned gender has been challenged by \u0000a growing number of experts who favour a model that supports gender exploration (e.g., by providing \u0000access to hormonal treatments and puberty blockers). Based on interviews with 36 parent-youth dyads \u0000(72 interviews in total), this article explores the expectations and impacts associated with medical \u0000transition. On the one hand, the interview data show that young people and their parents agree that \u0000access to trans-affirmative medical care has a positive impact on youth development. Specifically, it is \u0000seen to reduce suffering associated with gender dysphoria, while promoting both self-recognition and \u0000intersubjectivity. On the other hand, the interview data highlight the extent to which available health \u0000care pathways (often based on a binary approach) have failed to keep pace with the expectations and \u0000concerns of youth and their parents. It explores the objective \u0000dimensions of work (such as job quality), and more subjective considerations related to career paths, work \u0000situations, and professional or social priorities. The study draws on two complementary sources. The \u0000generational surveys conducted by the Centre d’études et de recherches sur les qualifications (Céreq) \u0000have allowed us to examine how representations of work shifted across an 18-year span. Meanwhile, data \u0000related to a single cohort of young people over seven years of their working life have allowed us to assess \u0000the effect of age. We explore the latter in terms of individual life and work experiences, the stages \u0000involved in the transition to adulthood, social background, and gender. Ultimately, the article identifies \u0000four categories of youth, each of which corresponds to a distinct and subjective relationship to work. \u0000These categories reflect various degrees of satisfaction and resignation in relation to work situations, \u0000setbacks, and opportunities for advancement. Such violence and its \u0000aftermath can have a significant impact on the life course trajectories of young adults, although this \u0000impact can also be tempered or aggravated by other life experiences. Based on semi-structured \u0000interviews with 35 young adults between the ages of 18 and 25 who were exposed to intimate partner \u0000violence in childhood or adolescence, this qualitative study aims to learn more about the connections \u0000between such exposure and other life course experiences. An adapted Life History Calendar was used \u0000during data collection. In addition to highlighting the superposition of study participants’ life course \u0000trajectories, analysis of the data also demonstrates the importance of agency in determining how these \u0000trajectories influence each other.
