PVFS stores file by storing fixed-size stripes in round-robin fashion cross I/O servers. The number and identity of I/O servers is selectable at execution time. Our evaluation includes testing with varying number and configuration of servers and varying client request patterns. Results show that NFS performance is limited by the disk and network throughput of the server. Both NFS and PVFS are affected by the number of clients in the system and when the I/O nodes also serve as clients. For fixed number of servers, PVFS performance is improved if the client nodes do not participate as servers. For the workloads tested, PVFS performance improves as the number of clients and servers increases to the maximum number of nodes on the system.","PeriodicalId":160584,"journal":{"name":"2nd IEEE/ACM International Symposium on Cluster Computing and the Grid (CCGRID'02)","volume":"75 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-05-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116019419","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These elements are currently converging and enabling the Advanced Web for computing, collaboration and communication. The infrastructure for the Advanced Web is called \"The Grid\", originally derived from the \"Power Grid\" which provides electricity to every wall socket. A computational or data grid is a hardware and software infrastructure that provides dependable, consistent, pervasive, and inexpensive access to computational capabilities. It connects distributed computers, storage devices, mobile devices, instruments, sensors, databases, and software applications.","PeriodicalId":160584,"journal":{"name":"2nd IEEE/ACM International Symposium on Cluster Computing and the Grid (CCGRID'02)","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-05-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127288951","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In contrast to previous work, we use user-centric performance metrics as the basis for system evaluation. Each user is modeled as having a utility function for each job which measures value delivered to the user as function of execution time. Summing over all utility functions in the workload, we use aggregate utility as a measure of overall value delivered to users. With aggregate utility as the performance metric, simulations are used to quantify the performance of both market-based and traditional batch scheduling algorithms under a variety of synthetic work-loads. Results show that an auction-based batch scheduling algorithm improves performance by a factor of up to 2-5x for sequential workloads and up to 14x for highly parallel workloads compared to traditional scheduling algorithms.","PeriodicalId":160584,"journal":{"name":"2nd IEEE/ACM International Symposium on Cluster Computing and the Grid (CCGRID'02)","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-05-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125653550","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper presents the architecture of an overlay service network called the Invisible Network. It is based on a two-stage architecture. The first-stage is responsible for service addressing, discovery, and mobility. The second-stage is responsible for quality of service aware resource allocation for wide-area services. None of them however addressed the issue of supporting transparent Java process migration for achieving dynamic load distribution and balancing. This paper presents a middleware, called M-JavaMPI, that runs on top of the standard JVM to support transparent Java process migration and communication redirection. The middleware allows Java processes to freely and transparently migrate between machines to achieve load balancing, and migrated processes can continue communication with other processes using MPI. The method we use to achieve process migration is to capture execution context and restoring the execution context at the Java bytecode level using the Java Virtual Machine Debugger Interface (JVMDI). Post-migration interprocess communication is enabled via a Restorable Java-MPI API. Tests using a 16-node cluster have Shown that our mechanism yields considerable performance gain through migration.","PeriodicalId":160584,"journal":{"name":"2nd IEEE/ACM International Symposium on Cluster Computing and the Grid (CCGRID'02)","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-05-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121491457","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This evaluation system benefits greatly from the newly emerged Grid. To embody a Grid environment, a Globus grid toolkit has been utilized as a building block. In this research we have distributed the computational workload for the ICA on a Globus based Grid environment composed of two Alpha cluster systems and a personal computer. In addition, in order to allow scientists and application developers to easily build the Grid-enabled system, we also have adopted a Grid-enabled-Message Passing Interface, called MPICH-G. An introduction of MPICH-G to the medical analysis system on a Grid environment makes it possible for a naïve user to realize rapid analysis without special knowledge of the Grid. Magnetoencephalography (MEG), a highly sophisticated medical technology, is used for the measurement of brain function. This model not only enables clients to take a more active role in the information dissemination process, but also may significantly increase the performance and reliability of the overall system, by eliminating the traditional notion of the \"server\" which could be a single point of failure, and a potential bottleneck. Although peer-to-peer systems enjoy significant and continually increasing popularity, we still do not have a clear understanding of the magnitude, the traffic patterns, and the potential performance bottlenecks of the recent peer-to-peer networks. In this paper we study the traffic patterns of Gnutella, a popular large-scale peer-to-peer system, and show that traffic patterns are very bursty even over several time scales. We especially focus on the types of the queries submitted by Gnutella peers, and their associated replies. We show that the queries submitted exhibit significant amounts of locality, that is, queries tend to be frequently and repeatedly submitted. To capitalize on this locality, we propose simple Gnutella caching mechanisms that cache query responses. Using trace-driven simulation we evaluate the effectiveness of Gnutella caching and show that it improves performance by as much as a factor of two.","PeriodicalId":160584,"journal":{"name":"2nd IEEE/ACM International Symposium on Cluster Computing and the Grid (CCGRID'02)","volume":"77 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-05-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133153163","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Its roots came from distributed highperformance computing, parallel computing, high-throughput computing, network and Web computing. The current trends clearly show that the integration of these technologies will continue and will result in new standards in which new protocols, services and APIs for uniform access to resources, selection, and aggregation will be developed. The new efforts such as Open Grid Services Architecture (OGSA), Legion/Jxta, CPM/Jxta, and Bayanihan/.NET are expected to demonstrate this integration. In organizing this workshop, a second meeting within the series of GridDemo events 4 , we had two main important objectives. First, we wanted to demonstrate that Grid technology is an already feasible technology that can actively be used for the scientific and other communities. Second, by showing the results and problems of various existing Grids, we would like to provide some kind of feedback for the technology developer community to better understand what they have achieved so far and what are the significant weak links that represent serious obstacles in the usability of current Grid technology. Our goals were well accepted by the Grid user and developer community and we received 13 excellent proposals for demonstrating different aspects of various application Grids and results of new Grid development projects. The subjects of the proposals fall into three main categories: 1. Grid Applications 2. Grid Technology and Grid Application Development 3. Grid and Networking In the first category we received four proposals that represent various applications of the Grid: the use of web services for accessing life sciences application, data-intensive molecular modelling for drug design using the Virtual Laboratory toolset on the World-Wide Grid, application in fluid mechanisms, and two application oriented Grids: a BioGrid and the INFN Grid for physicists. In the second category, the first project demonstrates the Grid technologies for resource finding, authentication, monitoring, steering, portal usage, etc. that are under development in a large EU project, called GridLab. The second demonstration is from IBM Research showing a Grid resource management system including dynamic resource allocation based on load and failure detection. The third presentation also shows a resource manager, the Condor system and its integration with a graphical parallel/distributed program development environment, called P-GRADE. The integrated system provides a powerful Grid application development environment for the users. Finally, another Application builder, called PAGIS is demonstrated on top of a Campus Grid. Demonstrations in the third category prove that Grid technology is strongly related with other distributed and network programming technologies like the Web and peer-to-peer systems. The first presentation demonstrates how guaranteed QoS can be achieved in the Grid even in the","PeriodicalId":160584,"journal":{"name":"2nd IEEE/ACM International Symposium on Cluster Computing and the Grid (CCGRID'02)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-05-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130158506","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
