Since wind farms may have a multi-stage development and are installed with different wind turbines from different technologies and/or venders, in this paper, a wind farm model with different types of wind generators is constructed according to Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC) generic wind generator models. In order to describe the dynamic behavior of the wind farm during system disturbances, by applying the data from phasor measurement units (PMUs), a multi-stage hierarchical parameters identification process based on heuristic algorithms is proposed to develop a dynamic equivalent model for the wind farm. Different scenarios are simulated to validate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed equivalent model. In addition, the modal analysis is performed to further validate the proposed approach by comparing the eigenvalues between the detailed wind farm model and the equivalent model.","PeriodicalId":160476,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE/IAS 55th Industrial and Commercial Power Systems Technical Conference (I&CPS)","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123764934","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Electrical equipment that has not been properly maintained can impact worker safety due to undocumented or unknown conditions. With aging infrastructure and modifications to electrical systems over time, the previously calculated short circuit capacity, arc flash hazards, and device coordination may not reflect the installed electrical system. Performing preventive maintenance on electrical systems at industrial facilities, especially the low voltage systems, can be more difficult during economic downtimes. Justifying the costs associated with maintaining and/or upgrading systems can be challenging. However, development and execution of electrical preventive maintenance (EPM) programs can greatly assist in outlining the requirements of electrical equipment and prevent unnecessary damage and/or replacement due to neglect. Further, regular maintenance can address underlying or hidden nature of issues that may have happened during daily operation of the equipment. EPM programs can also help to plan future expansions, improve reliability of equipment in the field, and decrease risk posed to workers and the overall operation.","PeriodicalId":160476,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE/IAS 55th Industrial and Commercial Power Systems Technical Conference (I&CPS)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128748484","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The grounding of a $3phi$ power transformer is designed to limit ground fault currents and maintain low ground potentials. These constraints can be translated into a resistive grounding that is usually designed based on the system ratings and parameters. The resistive grounding, however, can impact the flow of the harmonic components present in the exciting currents. As a result, undesired harmonic components are induced in primary and secondary voltages. This paper presents the design and performance of a frequency-selective grounding that can meet the constraints for grounding a $3phi$ power transformer. The developed grounding is designed to provide a resistive path for low frequency currents (faults), while providing a low impedance path for high frequency currents (harmonics). The frequency-selective grounding is experimentally tested for a $3phi$ power transformer with different primary and secondary winding configurations, different fault types, and source grounding. Test results show that the developed grounding can reduce the ground potential, harmonic distortion in primary and secondary voltages, and ground fault currents with a minimum interference with ground fault protective devices.","PeriodicalId":160476,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE/IAS 55th Industrial and Commercial Power Systems Technical Conference (I&CPS)","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115427448","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this light, this paper proposes a novel multi-energy configuration for the cruising ships. First, we introduce the high-efficient combined cooling heat and power (CCHP) plant in the ship with diesel generators and electric energy storage, to provide multiple energies. Second, to flexiblize the operation of CCHP plant and enhance the multi-energy interaction, the thermal storage and power to thermal conversion unit are also included. Further, a multiobjective coordinated energy dispatch and voyage scheduling method for the cruising ship is presented to simultaneously reduce the ship operating cost and gas emissions by the augmented ε-constraint method (AUGMECON). After the constraints linearization, the coordination method is formulated as a mix-integer linear programming (MILP) problem and solved by the Cplex solver. Finally, the proposed method is applied to a test cruising ship and by comparing it with the traditional benchmarks, its effectiveness is verified.","PeriodicalId":160476,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE/IAS 55th Industrial and Commercial Power Systems Technical Conference (I&CPS)","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121708763","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Sharing a common principle, the prevention of potential accidents and imminent injuries is a fundamental goal of laboratory environments. In addition, academic laboratories are attributed the exceptional responsibility to instill in students the culture of the safety, the basis of risk assessment, and of the exemplification of the prudent practice around energized objects. Undergraduate laboratory assignments may normally be framed based upon the repetition of established experiments and procedures, whereas, academic research laboratories may involve new methodologies and/or apparatus, for which the hazards may not be completely known to the faculty and student researchers. Yet, the academic laboratory should be an environment free of electrical hazards for both routine experiments and research endeavors, and faculty should offer practical inputs and safety-driven insights to academic administration to achieve such a paramount objective. In this paper, the authors discuss the challenges to the electrical safety in modern academic laboratories, where users may be exposed to harmful touch voltages.","PeriodicalId":160476,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE/IAS 55th Industrial and Commercial Power Systems Technical Conference (I&CPS)","volume":"69 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131312175","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to ensure the success of this trading mode, designing an effective bidding strategy in the P2P energy trading has been a hot topic in recent studies. However, in current studies, limitation still exsited such as lack of flexibility and unfair constraints on trading. To solve these problems, this paper proposes a two-stage bidding strategy in the residential Microgrid. In this mechanism, the equilibrim among fair competition in market, economic benefits in participants, and self-sufficiency in Mircogird is achieved. Besides, aiming to help residents make better decisions about their through bidding process, a trading price predictor and a tool for risk analysis, “Value at Risk” (VaR) are also offered in this process. Moreover, case studies with multiple households involved in a residential Microgrid verifed the effectiveness of the proposed method.","PeriodicalId":160476,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE/IAS 55th Industrial and Commercial Power Systems Technical Conference (I&CPS)","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133371243","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper presents the multi-objective economic/emission energy management of a microgrid including wind turbine, photovoltaic (PV) modules, combined heat and power (CHP) systems, power-only units, fuel cells, plug-in electric vehicles (PEV), heat-only unit and responsive loads. A price-based demand response program (DRP) is implemented to achieve a better management on demand-side. Also, the uncertainties of renewable generations, market price and load are modeled and two-stage stochastic programming is employed for modeling the optimization problem. The proposed model is evaluated in three case studies: single-objective energy management to minimize cost, single-objective energy management to minimize emission and multi-objective economic/emission energy management of the microgrid. The ε-constraint method is used to generate the Pareto optimal solutions in the third case. The results demonstrate how the microgrid resources are scheduled to reduce the cost and emission. Moreover, the emission and cost are decreased by about 10% and 6% respectively. Therefore, the multi-objective approach is presented for the selection of a compromise solution.","PeriodicalId":160476,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE/IAS 55th Industrial and Commercial Power Systems Technical Conference (I&CPS)","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117344423","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nowadays, drilling of a well can be done in the range of a few hours to a few weeks. Given the cost and complexity of building, mobilizing and operating, and space constraints, oil and gas companies rarely own their drilling rig and contract out specialized drillers. Their rigs often are operated for decades and contain rugged Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), most times of six-pulse thyristor bridge topology or SCR-driven DC motors. The dynamics of the drives show steep ramp-up/ramp-down, rich harmonic content, and a wide power factor range. To make matters worse, drilling operation is often conducted in isolated, weak systems, leading to large background voltage distortion when grid-connected. This paper presents simulations and measurements of top-drive and mud-pump VFDs in a large drill rig operating in Alberta, Canada. It was observed that the VFDs draw currents very high in harmonic and interharmonic contents. To further investigate the true impact of these harmonic emissions, the paper also quantifies the harmonic Attenuation Effect of the VFDs, which can lead to harmonic content overestimated, if ignored. Due to the rich harmonic emissions, care must be taken to appropriately size the interconnection transformer when grid connected, and this is covered in the paper as well. As expected, these loads must be managed accordingly by the electric utility to avoid issues to nearby customers.","PeriodicalId":160476,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE/IAS 55th Industrial and Commercial Power Systems Technical Conference (I&CPS)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129876422","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These new transformers are composed of a medium ac voltage (MV) stage, a dc stage, and a low ac voltage (LV) stage. Passive and active dc-links are used in SSTs to support new transformer functionalities, including hybrid (ac and dc) distribution, reactive power compensation, voltage/frequency regulation, power quality improvement, and distributed generation interconnection. However, a SST has to have one of its stages connected to a MV level, which mandates certain converter topologies and/or switching element capabilities. In addition, the dc-link stage has to provide isolation between the MV and LV levels, which requires the employment of isolated dc-dc power electronic converters (PECs). This paper provides a review of SSTs for distribution systems, in terms of the required technology, possible functionalities, performance, and challenges for SSTs and their host distribution systems.","PeriodicalId":160476,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE/IAS 55th Industrial and Commercial Power Systems Technical Conference (I&CPS)","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125748063","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the day-ahead scheduling, based on the forecast photovoltaic (PV) output and various loads, the first stage optimization model is established to minimize the operation cost in a daily time interval. In the real-time scheduling, considering that the PV output and loads are stochastic, the scenarios reduction based Monte Carlo method is used to generate multiple scenarios, and the second stage stochastic optimization model is adopted to minimize the weight sum of the expected deviation costs in the scenarios and the corresponding variance. A case of the CEN system has been studied, and results have been compared to verify the effectiveness of proposed method.","PeriodicalId":160476,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE/IAS 55th Industrial and Commercial Power Systems Technical Conference (I&CPS)","volume":"92 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133530970","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
