Mok (1996) to capture the semantics of real time applications where the consistency requirement of a transaction can be relaxed modulo a binary relation on the data space. Even though the notion of data similarity is naturally suited to many applications in the process control industry, its adoption is hampered by the lack of an easy interface to COTS (commercial-off-the-shelf) components. We report our ongoing work in incorporating the idea of data similarity into embedded applications, especially in the process control industry. Our approach is to allow designers to specify similarity predicates by means of an SQL-like interface to the client applications. Query processing is performed by a compact firm-real-time database engine called SRDE (Similarity-based Real-time Database Engine). SRDE is object oriented and is designed to manage real-time data efficiently in a distributed environment. By exploiting data similarity, SRDE can be used to minimize data traffic according to the client's specifications. SRDE has been implemented in 100% JAVA that supports JDBC API. We demonstrate the use of SRDE in a typical industrial control application.","PeriodicalId":160347,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 20th IEEE Real-Time Systems Symposium (Cat. Through a wireless remote control system, an operator can position the cameras to visually inspect and measure temperature distributions on any surface area of a 50 meter long underground tunnel. Feedback to the operator is provided through three wireless video channels, whose images are displayed live on the console. Alternatively, an automatically running program can record optical and thermal images over the entire tunnel. The imaging apparatus consists of a remote section equipped with cameras, pan unit and wireless communication units, all of which must operate in an environment with temperatures up to 300/spl deg/C for the duration of the image acquisition period (approximately 1.0 hours). The remote unit is controlled from a computer system located outside the high-temperature zone. Application software with a graphical user interface (GUI) was developed for real time remote control and for the monitoring of the measurement and observation process.","PeriodicalId":160347,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 20th IEEE Real-Time Systems Symposium (Cat. Additionally, there are hard real-time requirements that must be met in a combat system, which is a critical component of the total shipboard platform. Information security services and real-time services are sometimes required simultaneously. However the real-time requirements and the security requirements conflict with one another. NSWC-DD has initiated testing of a security enhancement for the Internet Protocol, IP Security (IPSEC) in a distributed real-time environment. This paper provides a brief overview how IPSEC may be used in the platform of interest and the impact of implementing IPSEC within the kernel of the workstation operating system.","PeriodicalId":160347,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 20th IEEE Real-Time Systems Symposium (Cat. We focus on these aspects of correctness and efficiency, specifically considering the real time aspects where the need is to ensure satisfaction of stringent timing and operational constraints. We establish the use of mathematically rigorous techniques such as formal methods (FMs) in not only providing for their traditional usage in establishing correctness checks, but also for their capability of assessing and analyzing timing requirements in dependable real time protocols. We present our perspectives in utilizing FMs in developing exact case analyses of fault tolerant and real time protocols. We discuss the insights obtained and flaws identified in the hand analysis over the process of formally analyzing and verifying the correctness of an existing fault tolerant real time scheduling protocol.","PeriodicalId":160347,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 20th IEEE Real-Time Systems Symposium (Cat. Liu, et al. (1997) in scheduling real-time applications and non-real-time applications, where the schedulability of each real-time application can be validated independently of other applications in the system. We replace the underlying earliest-deadline-first OS scheduler of the open system architecture by W.S. Liu, et al. (1997) with a rate-monotonic OS scheduler. The motivation behind this work is that many existing operating systems may not support the earliest deadline first scheduling very well. We propose to use the idea of sporadic servers to preserve CPU cycles for applications. We also develop schedulability tests for real-time applications which adopt the rate monotonic scheduling algorithm, the earliest deadline first scheduling algorithm, the priority ceiling protocol, and the stack resource policy. We allow tasks in each application to share local and global non-preemptable resources. A global resource synchronization mechanism is proposed. This paper provides a fixed-priority-based alternative for the important open system architecture.","PeriodicalId":160347,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 20th IEEE Real-Time Systems Symposium (Cat. This simplifies hardware to software migration and can help embedded system designers meet design constraints. Previous work describes how to efficiently integrate threads. In this paper we demonstrate how to link trigger events with guest thread execution and how to analyze an application to determine which threads to integrate. The analysis involves timing measurement and prediction to identify the amount of easily accessible temporally deterministic code within each function. This information is used to predict quantitatively the impact of design decisions on system efficiency and help guide integration. To illustrate this process we evaluate an application predicted for the year 2005, when $20 buys a 2000 MIPS embedded processor-a software-based high-resolution MPEG video player.","PeriodicalId":160347,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 20th IEEE Real-Time Systems Symposium (Cat. The behavior of a distributed real-time system, on the other hand not only depends on the inputs but also on the order and timing of the concurrent tasks that execute and communicate with each other and the environment. Hence, sequential test techniques are not directly applicable, since they disregard the significance of order and timing of the tasks. In this paper we present a method for identifying all possible orderings of task starts, preemptions and completions for tasks executing in a distributed real-time system. Together with an accompanying testing strategy, this method allows test methods for sequential programs to be applied, since each identified ordering can be regarded as a sequential program. In the presented analysis and testing strategy, we consider task sets with recurring release patterns, and take into account the effects of clock synchronization and variations in start and execution times of the involved tasks.","PeriodicalId":160347,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 20th IEEE Real-Time Systems Symposium (Cat. For these soft constraints we take a stochastic point of view and allow arbitrary probability distributions to express delays of activities. The semantics of this process algebra is given in terms of stochastic automata, a variant of timed automata where clocks are initialised randomly and run backwards. To analyse quantitative properties, an algorithm is presented for the on-the-fly generation of a discrete-event simulation model from a process algebra specification. On the qualitative side, a symbolic technique for classical reachability analysis of stochastic automata is presented. As a result a unifying framework for the specification and analysis of quantitative and qualitative properties is obtained. We discuss an implementation of both analytic methods and specify and analyse a fault-tolerant multi-processor system.","PeriodicalId":160347,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 20th IEEE Real-Time Systems Symposium (Cat.
