The political situation in India shaped the policies of the government towards the Indian Press. The attempts whatever made by the government to stifle the freedom of press didn't dampen the spirit of the Indian Press. The actions against the Indian press can be categorized as administrative and legislative. The Indian Penal Code, 1870 and Criminal Procedure Code, 1898 were the administrative laws where as the Press Acts of 1908, 1910 and 1931 were the press legislations. The administrative measures included the issue of warnings to the editors or proprietors of nationalist press, counter propaganda against such papers which espoused the cause of nationalist patronage to pro-government papers and verbal remonstrances. An attempt is made in this paper to study the implementation of Indian Penal Code as Modus Operandi of the British to curb the anti-British tone of the nationalists and their press.","PeriodicalId":160212,"journal":{"name":"Social Sciences Education eJournal","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-07-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129265778","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We demonstrate the value of adding option strategies to reduce the risk of equity positions around earnings announcements. Such trading strategies enhance the pedagogical value of these classes in several ways. First, students learn how to implement risk reduction strategies. Second, the proper implementation of these strategies requires students to learn the complex mechanisms associated with corporate earnings dissemination and analyst coverage. This also provides an opportunity to study earnings drift, which is a persistent and economically significant financial anomaly. We document how students have successfully utilized collar strategies to immunize risk in the fund at the University of Denver.","PeriodicalId":160212,"journal":{"name":"Social Sciences Education eJournal","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123148079","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, smaller African countries in particular suffer from the planned punitive tariffs, similar to the famous African proverb: 'When elephants fight, it is the grass that suffers'. After years of talk on partnership for economic development (AGOA, Cotonou Agreement, EPAs, etc) Trump's tariffs mean a severe blow to participatory foreign trade and sustainable industrialization in Africa. Egypt and South Africa for example, the potentially most affected African countries, face massive job losses and earning opportunities, with all the consequences that this entails for their already fragile economy and the population in dire poverty. Trump's intervention thus joins the continued power politics of former colonial powers vis à vis Africa. Nevertheless, despite these asymmetric power relations, unfair trade relations and the desolate state of African infant industries are not necessarily due to externalities. More often than not they are home-made. African agency plays an ambiguous role in enhancing participatory trade and indigenous industrialization.","PeriodicalId":160212,"journal":{"name":"Social Sciences Education eJournal","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121126295","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The present paper investigates the driving forces of equity crowdfunding and the impact of the blockchain. \u0000Design: In a two-round, expert-based Delphi survey, ten market-driving forces within equity crowdfunding are identified and ranked according to how they influence equity crowdfunding, and in turn, how they are influenced by blockchain technology. \u0000Findings: Savings and financial benefits, facilitation of the financing process, satisfaction of intrinsic and social needs, outreach of projects and products, costs from equity funding, and financial provision were found to have a positive effect, whereas risks from equity crowdfunding, educational gap, investor protection, and monitoring problems and asymmetric information were found to have a negative impact on equity funding. \u0000Research limitations: Any Delphi study depends on the selection and interactive votings of experts. \u0000Practical implications: Experts assessed that the blockchain has a positive influence on all of those forces, also to a certain extent counteracting negative effects. This indicates that Equity Crowdfunding Based on the Blockchain can be viable approach for financing startups if the counteracting effects are sufficiently mitigated. \u0000Originality: Blockchain-based equity crowdfunding has the potential of becoming disruptive.","PeriodicalId":160212,"journal":{"name":"Social Sciences Education eJournal","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130958727","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In particular, we analyze the status quo of blockchain-based education technologies (N = 62; i.e., a full analysis). We performed a qualitative content analysis of providers’ websites to analyze the characteristics of their technologies. The analysis reveals that existing blockchain-based education technologies are diverse and offer important advantages for education (e.g., trust and equal opportunities). Employers seem to profit from these technologies (e.g., trust in applicants), but only some technologies contribute to the individualization of education. Current blockchain-based education technologies were primarily made for the general public or for job seekers. We conclude that blockchain technology might disrupt education but that this process of change is only in its infancy. Given the high relevance of this topic, we conclude by developing an agenda for future research.","PeriodicalId":160212,"journal":{"name":"Social Sciences Education eJournal","volume":"162 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133756788","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Excellence Initiative in Germany was aiming to enhance research quality, international visibility and supporting peak performing universities. We want to study if a side effect occurred that the Initiative had on academic entrepreneurial activity and if so, whether it is a system-wide and/or a “winners” effect. We measure entrepreneurial activity by the patenting activity and industry collaboration of a university. Our analysis is based on 73 German universities observed from 2004-2011. Employing a difference-in-differences estimation, we find that the Initiative created an advantage for whole Germany while being an Excellence University does not have an impact on academic entrepreneurship in terms of patenting activity. However, we find a Matthew effect in terms of rewards in industry collaboration. We conclude that the Initiative had positive side effects for the system and partly also for the winners of the competition.","PeriodicalId":160212,"journal":{"name":"Social Sciences Education eJournal","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126085270","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

International migration is a widespread phenomenon among Egyptians and remittances can play an important role in alleviating household budget constraints. How do Egyptians invest their income received from remittances? Do remittances act as a significant tool to relax budget constraints for the household sector? Can we capture the relevant impact of the remittances on the education level in Egypt? The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of remittances on the level of educational attainment of children between ages 6-21 in Egypt. We distinguish this impact among two categories of individuals according to their age: the school-aged individuals and the university-aged persons. Two important contributions can be highlighted from our study: First, to the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study that provides information on how do people invest their income received from remittances in Egypt, especially after the 25th of January revolution. Second, it measures the impact of remittances on educational attainment rather than school enrollment rates, as adopted in the previous studies. Using the latest available dataset on Egypt that includes detailed information on households’ socioeconomic background and migration, the Egypt Labor Market Panel Survey (ELMPS, 2012), we imply an Ordered Probit Model using an Instrumental Variable (IV) approach to estimate the impact of remittance receipt on educational attainment. Findings show that remittances relax budget constraints positively impacting the educational attainment of university-aged youth. However, empirical results do not find any impact of remittances the school-aged individuals.","PeriodicalId":160212,"journal":{"name":"Social Sciences Education eJournal","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124473142","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using institution-level data on 194 law schools from 2006 to 2015, this study investigates whether students are price sensitive to increasing costs. Incorporating two-way fixed effects models, results suggest that higher tuition and fee prices are not associated with fewer applications to law school. However, higher estimated net costs of attendance are associated with greater numbers of first-year enrollments, particularly among private schools. When stratified by tiers on the basis of selectivity, this positive relationship exists among law schools in the third and fourth tiers, yet no association between net costs and enrollments are observed among law schools in the first, second, and fifth tiers.","PeriodicalId":160212,"journal":{"name":"Social Sciences Education eJournal","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-05-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116769383","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Governance is measured using the GCG rating that covers eleven aspects. The authors apply instrumental regression to link governance to performance and stability. The study covers a sample of 150 banks. The result shows that bank stability can mediate bank governance and bank performance. On the determinant of bank performance, it can be concluded that the GCG rating is positive and directly influences bank performance. Bank stability is also positive for bank performance indicating the indirect contribution of the GCG rating to bank performance. NPL, LDR, CAR and bank’s size (LASSET) are all negative and significant. The aim of this paper is to provide strong empirical evidence on the importance of governance and stability for performance. The limitations of this paper are the size of the sample and that it only covers public banks which are theoretically required to apply better governance in all aspects of their business by the Capital Market Authority.","PeriodicalId":160212,"journal":{"name":"Social Sciences Education eJournal","volume":"67 4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116379587","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
