By utilizing the symmetry of the resonant current distribution, the size of the antenna can be reduced by one-half of the original patch. Second, slits are inserted within the antenna which are perpendicular to the resonant current. This forces the current to flow around the obstacles which has the effect of reducing the resonant frequency. Using slits, an antenna of one-fourth the area of the original patch can be realized. Lastly, using two patches displaced laterally or vertically an antenna with dual band capabilities can be realized. The two frequency bands, 1.8, 2.4 GHz and 5.2, 5.7 GHz, are chosen to lie within the existing PCS and Bluetooth bands and the two future Bluetooth frequency bands, respectively. The antenna geometry is an aperture coupled microstrip antenna. The reduced size and thin substrate thicknesses give compatibility with portable communications systems.","PeriodicalId":159827,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society International Symposium. 2001 Digest. That is functions that lead to fixed error convergence rates. In contrast to a low-order scheme, a high-order method should lead to controllable error convergence. Further, a high-order scheme should reduce the solution error with a modest increase in computational resources and complexity. A number of high-order basis functions have been introduced for MoM solutions employing such basis can result in high-order accuracy using a Galerkin solution. The difficulty is that a Galerkin scheme results in an expensive double integration that must be computed to controllable accuracy. A novel high-order method is introduced for the thin-wire problem. The method is posed in a Galerkin form. A simple transformation is then applied that leads to a point-matched form of the operator, subsequently eliminating the outer integration. Through numerical examples based on both scattering of thin wires and antenna radiation, it is demonstrated that the method leads to true high-order convergence.","PeriodicalId":159827,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society International Symposium. 2001 Digest. Geoph. Res.-Solid Earth, vol.98, p.1759-75, 1993) and the contrast source inversion (CSI) method (see van den Berg, P.M. and Kleinman, R.E., Inverse Problems, vol.13, p.1607-20, 1997). For many problems, the two-step inversion method suffices. In very high contrast cases, where further improvement is needed, we apply the CSI method. However, rather than using back-propagation as the initial solution, we use the EBA inversion results as an initial profile to the nonlinear CSI method. The CSI method also uses the efficient conjugate gradient procedure and the FFT algorithm. In our implementation, this inverse method can solve typical electromagnetic induction problems with a contrast as high as 100:1.","PeriodicalId":159827,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society International Symposium. 2001 Digest. The accuracy of TDIE techniques remains largely unstudied. Though methods for improving the accuracy and convergence properties of the spatial discretization of TDIEs can be based on well-known frequency domain method of moments (MoM) techniques, temporal discretization methods are still poorly understood. In this work, a band-limited interpolation function (BLIF) is used as the temporal basis function to improve this state of affairs. It is shown that TDIE solutions created using BLIFs for temporal interpolation converge exponentially to the solution provided by the MoM with the amount of work required to produce them. In addition, unlike the method presented by Weile, Shanker, Ergin, and Michielssen (see Antennas and Propagation International Symposium, Salt Lake City, UT, 2000), the method presented here is shown to work on both the electric and magnetic field integral equations.","PeriodicalId":159827,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society International Symposium. 2001 Digest. In spite of this, the aberration theory essential to properly design these antennas remains relatively undeveloped. Despite the excellent work by Dragone (1983) on the diffraction theory of aberrations of offset dual-reflector geometries, a geometrical theory of aberrations is still necessary for a more intuitive understanding of these antennas. In this paper a geometrical theory of aberrations for classical offset dual-reflector antennas is presented. The derivation is based on the optical path length concept and is restricted to comma and astigmatism, which are the two aberrations with dominant impact on the antenna performance.","PeriodicalId":159827,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society International Symposium. 2001 Digest. {"title":"Comparison of two flat reflector-type designs for dual-polarization, dual-band operation","authors":"S. Duffy, S. This is a result of its desirable characteristics based on geometric optics. These include relative frequency independence for sufficiently large apertures and high aperture efficiency. However, the parabolic reflector occupies a large volume. This may be aesthetically unappealing on the sides of buildings and structures. Also, from a mobile user perspective, a desirable characteristic is having a large aperture during operation while having a small volume when packed away and not in use. The parabolic reflector is typically constructed of multiple petals for mobile uses, but it does not pack into as small a volume as a flat, thin antenna would due to the curvature of the paraboloid. Therefore, the primary goal of the antennas studied in this work is developing flat reflector antennas to utilize the advantages of large reflector apertures while remaining capable of packing into a small volume. In addition, system requirements dictated dual-band, dual-polarized operation. Two flat reflectors are compared: a reflectarray and a zoned reflector. While each design is inherently narrow-band, methods of achieving dual-band operation were employed.","PeriodicalId":159827,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society International Symposium. 2001 Digest. This is a drop-shaped antenna that is supposed to have a wideband radiation characteristics due to its geometry and special structure. The dielectric layer helps to keep the size of the antenna small. To avoid undesired increase of the Q-factor due to this layer its thickness is kept as small as possible. The structure was numerically simulated using the method of auxiliary sources (MAS). The field distributions for particular frequencies are presented together with the frequency response of the investigated structure.","PeriodicalId":159827,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society International Symposium. 2001 Digest.
