In this context, time synchronization is a very important issue. Many industrial sectors, such as financial and power, need to achieve high time accuracy. The IEEE 1588-2008 standard [1] defines the second version of PTP, designed to archive clock accuracy in the sub-microsecond range. Previous works [2] [3] has shown PTP vulnerability to byzantine failures. This paper describes an alternative to improve PTP robustness to the byzantine failure without modifying PTP slaves.","PeriodicalId":159620,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE International Symposium on Precision Clock Synchronization for Measurement, Control, and Communication (ISPCS)","volume":"140 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123392570","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

But time synchronization accuracy depends on the performance of PTP nodes, network topology, environmental conditions and various other factors. This makes the determination of synchronization accuracy a complex task. A mechanism for determining the worst case synchronization accuracy is defined in the PTP Power Profile. A TLV is used for accumulating a vendor defined worst case inaccuracy. However in practice when using this approach the inaccuracy values are often much higher than the real synchronization accuracy. In this paper, a technique for automatic determination of synchronization path quality is investigated. It utilizes PTP Bridges with an inaccuracy estimation performed using an inaccuracy model that is separated into static and dynamic inaccuracy contributors. One assumption is that the inaccuracy in the PTP time observed by a bridge, depends on the position of the bridge in the sync path. The latter is due to accumulation of more, possibly independent, random contributors. The effect of increasing deviation is modeled and verified using an experimental setup. The paper concludes that detailed knowledge about the PTP network (cable lengths, inaccuracy contribution metrics for the specific nodes within the sync path, etc.) are useful for automatic determination of the synchronization path quality, synchronization monitoring, system configuration and diagnosis. We suggest an enhancement to the TimeInaccuracy TLV that may possibly be incorporated within the next PTP revision, to better facilitate the protocol support for the above functions.","PeriodicalId":159620,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE International Symposium on Precision Clock Synchronization for Measurement, Control, and Communication (ISPCS)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124244887","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The synchronization precision is usually closely connected to the positioning accuracy in networks for the purpose of localization. This paper introduces a concept, how the clocks of low-complexity stationary receivers can be adjusted to the same frequency with the help of a television broadcast signal. Only parts of the signal information are used to achieve a manageable data rate for the embedded low-power processor. With a new algorithm the performance of the frequency estimation can be kept high compared to the use of the total signal energy, while the processing load can be reduced dramatically.","PeriodicalId":159620,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE International Symposium on Precision Clock Synchronization for Measurement, Control, and Communication (ISPCS)","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123518030","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Design for reliability, robustness and availability should optimally be taken into account for the architecture of the synchronization subsystem as high-level redundancy schemes are limited in this respect. This work focuses on robustness of the clock servo subsystem and its sensitivity to disturbances, such as sudden changes of the packet delay, packet delay variation, environment of the oscillator, or packet loss. In particular, Kalman filter- and proportional-integral controller-steered clocks are investigated for their suitability for robust high-precision synchronization systems.","PeriodicalId":159620,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE International Symposium on Precision Clock Synchronization for Measurement, Control, and Communication (ISPCS)","volume":"113 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122671088","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Intermediate devices such as network switches are needed when the control systems are built on a multi-hop network for wide area operations. However, the introduction of switches causes conflicts between the reply packets from the devices in a switch, and thus, the delays on the backward and forward paths would be different and the synchronization accuracy is degraded as a result. On the other hand, it is difficult to build low cost control systems when using dedicated switches for the precision time protocol (i.e., boundary clock or transparent clock). Therefore, the authors propose a method that estimates the conflicts between synchronization packets based on the observable information by using the synchronization master device and applies the estimation to the synchronization method. We used communication evaluation board to create a prototype for the proposed method and then evaluated it. The results showed that the level of accuracy was ±1μs accuracy under five slaves and that there was a 2-msec cyclic time synchronization.","PeriodicalId":159620,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE International Symposium on Precision Clock Synchronization for Measurement, Control, and Communication (ISPCS)","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124859578","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It describes the possible sources of error in such a system, such as path asymmetries and non-deterministic delays, and proposed solutions for them. The methods described improve synchronization accuracy by enhancing the accuracy of timestamps of both ingress and egress 1588 event messages. The clocking architecture of the physical layer for 1000BASE-T, including the master and slave modes of operation, is discussed in detail. Both the constant and dynamic time error components contribute to the time error in a network, which limits the number of clocks, cascaded in a chain. Due to complex network topologies and different network technologies, the limit on the number of intermediate supporting clocks may not meet all the requirements for future systems. In order to ensure a minimum time error, it is important also to keep the dynamic time error low. One of the effective ways is to employ higher timestamp resolutions. In this paper, we analyze the dynamic time error in cascaded homogenous Telecom boundary clocks. The upper bound of the dynamic time error accumulation at the output of the Telecom-time slave clock (T-TSC) node is derived for homogenous time clocks. The effect of timestamp resolution is theoretically discussed. The measurement results in a mobile backhaul network indicate that a high timestamp resolution (e.g., 500 MHz) outperforms the conventional timestamp resolution based on the timestamp frequency of 125 MHz.","PeriodicalId":159620,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE International Symposium on Precision Clock Synchronization for Measurement, Control, and Communication (ISPCS)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129948124","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
