Current state-of-the-art GUI generation approaches support fully automatic GUI generation for different devices, but the usability of the resulting GUIs is typically rather low. This work presents the development and heuristic evaluation of two automatically generated GUIs for a small bike rental application, one for a desktop PC and one for a smartphone, in form of a case study. To improve the usability of such automatically generated GUIs, we considered a set of usability heuristics already during the model-driven development of the application. The results of the subsequently performed heuristic evaluation show that the consideration of usability heuristics in the first iteration of a model-driven development process allows to ensure a basic level of usability. However, they also underline that manual customization is inevitable for achieving high quality GUIs.","PeriodicalId":159306,"journal":{"name":"2013 Africon","volume":"143 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132401297","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

LTE-A enhancements provide an attractive long-term solution for operators to implement cost-effective capacity-upgrades and guarantee affordable broadband access in the emerging markets (e.g., Africa). The fast expanding densely-populated informal settlements are among the key areas that could benefit from this new technology. This paper presents a simulation study on the spectral efficiency gains that are achievable with CoMP transmission in an exemplary dense informal settlement area. The results demonstrate that use of CoMP provides capacity enhancements without need for costly deployment of additional macro sites, thus contributing to affordability of broadband access through reduced cost-per-bit. Moreover, we note possible improvements in energy efficiency, by lowering transmit powers without significant impact on CoMP spectral efficiency gains.","PeriodicalId":159306,"journal":{"name":"2013 Africon","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127918357","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, a Joint Source Channel Decoding (JSCD) scheme is proposed for circular non-binary turbo codes. With a view to exploit a-priori probabilities from source statistics, a symbol level trellis is incorporated into the circular trellis of the non-binary turbo decoder. Reversible Variable Length Codes (RVLC) are used as the input source in all simulations. Results show that with JSCD, circular duo binary turbo codes provide an average gain of 0.4 dB at Bit Error Rate (BER) of 10-5 as compared to conventional decoding of circular duo binary turbo codes. With circular triple binary turbo codes, JSCD provides a striking average gain of 3.5 dB at a BER of 10-6 compared to conventional decoding of circular triple binary turbo codes.","PeriodicalId":159306,"journal":{"name":"2013 Africon","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129271898","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In addition, the AR coefficients of the data field generated as the sum of 2-D complex sinusoids corrupted by additive complex Gaussian noise are predicted and its spectrum is estimated. The results are compared with the classical 2-D FFT-based estimates. The new efficient 2-D (AR) lattice modeling technique is newly presented and based on employing the auxiliary vertical and horizontal prediction error fields. The aim of this method is to obtain simultaneously all possible types of causal and noncausal 2-D models for an arbitrary rectangular shape of the prediction support region. The obtained causal quarter-plain models are mostly found stable.","PeriodicalId":159306,"journal":{"name":"2013 Africon","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126430781","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The energy efficiency of WSNs is therefore of great importance. In this paper a novel SN which was specifically designed for use in WSN test beds is presented. The design addresses shortcomings in existing SN hardware used in test bed environments. Each node is capable of measuring its own power consumption as well as remaining battery capacity. The SN design includes a battery charger to assist with node redeployment. Each SN is modular and can support a wide array of sensors and transceivers. Application areas include WSN test beds, data collection, automation and education. It evolved from many concepts such as distributed processing and parallel computing. In addition, virtualization is the core of cloud computing since it facilitates live migration for the sake of load balancing. The ultimate result is the optimization of resources utilization and increase in the whole system's performance. Moreover, virtualization plays an important role in achieving disaster recovery plans. Furthermore, virtual machines secure the underlying physical hardware against malware. However, parallel computing is of no less importance, especially to cloud platforms. Consequently, contemporary laptops, mobile and hand-held devices manufacturers produce multicore equipment with the aim of achieving high performance levels when these become nodes in a cloud environment. However, what is the mutual effect of virtualization and parallel processing? Do they impede each other? Do they really boost the overall performance collectively? This research helps to better understand the effect of virtualization on parallel processing. In addition, this paper covers some researches made to answer such questions. Such studies are so few - to the extent of our knowledge - that they don't give comprehensive answers to the previously imposed questions. Finally, a methodology is exposed to quantitatively measure the mutual effect of parallelism and virtualization in a cloud environment.","PeriodicalId":159306,"journal":{"name":"2013 Africon","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115852224","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As such, we work on the idea of integrating the gigabits passive optical network (GPON) with wireless local area network (WLAN) to realize fiber-wireless networks. We focused on techniques to improve the end user WLAN performance by utilizing the interoperability of these two networks. In this paper, the fairness between the uplink and the downlink transmission for the IEEE 802.11a WLAN in the fiber-wireless networks is investigated. A simple fairness index is introduced as the comparison metric. Our proposed scheme showed promising results as it maintains an almost unity fairness index irrespective of the traffic load. This performance is achieved by reducing the constant contention window size of the access point to one fourth of its original size. The approach gives a higher transmission priority to the access point considering the fact it carried more load than its associate wireless users.","PeriodicalId":159306,"journal":{"name":"2013 Africon","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115962401","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
