In this paper, we propose an application layer power-congestion-distortion (P-C-D) optimized multi-path transmission scheduling algorithm. The algorithm utilizes existing techniques and protocols on the various layers and is designed to minimize the overall transmission power consumption while maintaining a desired level of quality. Simulation results show that optimal tradeoffs can be made between available multiple routes and transmission opportunities. Heuristic approaches can also be applied with much lower complexity without sacrificing much performance.","PeriodicalId":158650,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Symposium on Wireless Communication Systems","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114599872","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, congestion in such networks may lead to throughput degradation, packet loss and longer transmission delay. Therefore, routing and traffic forwarding schemes which are aware of the congestion status of a wireless network can efficiently improve network performance. In this paper, we propose a new congestion-aware routing scheme which may direct different paths for different services types, according to network congestion status. The goal of this routing scheme is to use traffic load metric for choosing a high throughput path for each mesh client towards the most appropriate Internet gateway so that load balancing is achieved among gateways. Simulations based on ns2 are conducted in order to evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme, considering both UDP and TCP traffic classes. We observe that the proposed scheme outperforms the legacy routing scheme in the simulated scenarios.","PeriodicalId":158650,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Symposium on Wireless Communication Systems","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124445353","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, power consumption of network operations is critical and subject to optimization. One of the fundamental problems in ad-hoc networks is multicasting. In this work we consider the so-called minimum energy multicast (MEM) problem, which can be stated as a combinatorial optimization problem. We develop an ant colony optimization metaheuristic for networks with omni-directional and directional antennas. The results show that our algorithm consistently outperforms existing techniques.","PeriodicalId":158650,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Symposium on Wireless Communication Systems","volume":"59 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123907177","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It determines network topology by hierarchical clustering to avoid radio collision, which enables us to gather data with minimum data latency from numerous high-density sensor nodes. However, dynamic channel selection mechanism based on channel usage information from one-hop neighbor nodes causes multi-channel hidden node problems in a multi-channel multi-hop wireless network. In this paper, we propose a new approach of channel selection. Nodes snoop data channels during idle times and then select an idle data channel within the carrier sensing range by using both the snooping results and the channel usage information. Our simulation results verify that the proposed channel selection approach can effectively avoid the multi-channel hidden node problem and improve the networkwide performance.","PeriodicalId":158650,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Symposium on Wireless Communication Systems","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129396766","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Fundamental to the operation of a CR is the detection of presence of legacy communication. Energy detector (ED) is a simple and effective signal sensing method. However, the ED requires accurate estimation of the noise power. Any error in the estimation, which is common in practice, affects its performance. In this study we have looked at the detection problem using an antenna array. Under noise only case, the array covariance matrix has reasonably equal eigenvalues. On the other hand when a signal is present, the strongest eigenvalue is dissimilar to the rest. To measure the equality of the eigenvalues we use the sphericity test. We have found that under realistic assumptions about noise uncertainty and signal correlation the array based sphericity method of signal detection can perform better than the ED. Also, unlike the ED the sphericity test does not require any estimation of the noise power.","PeriodicalId":158650,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Symposium on Wireless Communication Systems","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130165424","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We propose an eigen-structure based approach to estimate the gain and phase of each antenna sensor and mutual coupling coefficients between antenna sensors. By preprocessing the transmission signal in base station with the estimated parameters, the gain and phase mismatch and mutual coupling effects are compensated. The approach is based on the fact that it is possible for Scarce-State-Transition decoding and syndrome decoding to determine the probability of a certain trellis state before the actual decoding happens. This allows the separation of the received sequence into independant blocks with known initial and final states, thus making overlapping or modifications of the encoder or the information stream unnecessary. The proposed scheme offers potentials for both parallelization and reduction of power consumption.","PeriodicalId":158650,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Symposium on Wireless Communication Systems","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126554854","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
