Alongside the sense of instability that these events\u0000 provoked, there are a number of open-air amusements, shows, exhibitions,\u0000 and theatrical representations, from the Directoire and through\u0000 the Napoleonic era. This chapter aims to analyze the mechanisms that\u0000 allowed the development of these spaces. Ephemerality and temporality\u0000 are central to this investigation, often determining the development of\u0000 the space, its construction and functions, but also the cultural practices\u0000 this comprehension of the space engendered. My objective is to discuss\u0000 the visual models and cultural references enabling the rearrangement of\u0000 existing areas and the rise of new “spheres” devoted to the consumption\u0000 of entertainment.
