A focus group study approach was used. The study found that the feeling of social presence of people of interest when watching content with them was considered to add value to the viewing experience. Users found value in availability of all (in this case audio, video, text) interaction modalities. The key requirement is the ability for selective enabling/disabling of individual interaction features as per the user preferences and context. The context was considered to be influenced by both the relation with other participants and the content being consumed. Sports, news, user generated content, short clips were considered to be most suited for social consumption in the mobile context. Battery life, cost and network quality were the major concerns for adopting such a system in a real-world environment.","PeriodicalId":155486,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE International Symposium on a World of Wireless, Mobile and Multimedia Networks & Workshops","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128103835","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A channel assignment approach is presented using suitable algorithms with key components the interference model, the link ordering and the channel selection metric. We have implemented and evaluated the proposed channel assignment in an actual metropolitan mesh network which covers an area of 60kmIsu2} in the city of Heraklion and consists of 14 nodes, among which seven are core nodes with up to four 802.11a wireless interfaces each, and one for management and monitoring. Such a process is a majo task to develop an efficient network layer, since it allows routing protocols to efficiently use neighbors as relays for multi-hop communications. In the last years, a number of link-quality aware routing metrics have been proposed and analyzed. However, such metrics usually adopt simple link-quality estimators based on moving average filters, which lead to poor performances due to their static nature. In this paper, we propose to improve the estimation of the link quality resorting to a bio-inspired estimator based on the neural network paradigm. The effectiveness of the proposal has been proved by means of a numerical performance com-parison between the proposed estimator and the traditional ones under several environmental conditions.","PeriodicalId":155486,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE International Symposium on a World of Wireless, Mobile and Multimedia Networks & Workshops","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131258287","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is based on the proactive Optimized Link State Routing (OLSR) protocol to deal with applications with high Quality of Service (QoS) demands. Since routing with multiple metrics is an NPcomplete problem, we use the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Pruning techniques to perform such routing. The proposal, dubbed here OLSR-MM (Multiple-Metric), offers the best available routes based on the considered metrics and is evaluated on Network Simulator 2.31.","PeriodicalId":155486,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE International Symposium on a World of Wireless, Mobile and Multimedia Networks & Workshops","volume":" 10","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"113952900","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While many studies have modeled malware proliferation, little has been done to take into account the different types of devices that may exist in an ad hoc wireless network. We have therefore developed two novel models that consider diversity of entity as well as interactions between different classes of network items to see how those features affect the spread of a disease. Our models, based on a 4-compartment epidemic method, also have taken into consideration various states that a device may undergo when it gets infected by the malware. We propose these analytical models as an aid to understanding the spread of malware through a network. A huge result space is producible by our framework thus makes it appropriate to describe many viral proliferating scenarios. In addition, we have developed a formula to calculate the possible average number of newly infected devices in the considered system. An important contribution of our work is the comprehension of item diversity, which has influence on the viral propagation. We have found that more types of network item cause a higher risk that malware spreads wider.","PeriodicalId":155486,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE International Symposium on a World of Wireless, Mobile and Multimedia Networks & Workshops","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133283411","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The data collected by each node is communicated through the network to the sink, which uses all reported data to determine characteristics of the environment or detect an event. Prolonging sensor's operable lifetime is a main design challenge of these networks. A good energy saving technique in this direction is to schedule nodes sleep interval with the communication radio turned off. In this paper, we propose a distributed topology control algorithm, termed ECTC, which uses a clustering approach. It is built on the notion that when a region of a shared channel wireless sensor network has a sufficient density of nodes, significant energy saving is obtained by allowing redundant nodes to sleep. Using the two-hop neighborhood information, certain nodes sequentially select a subset of nodes to be active among all nodes in the neighborhood, to ensure connectivity. Moreover, to ensure fairness, the role of active nodes is rotated periodically to ensure energy-balanced operations. Results from stochastic geometry are used to derive solutions for the values of parameters of our algorithm that minimize the total energy spent in the network when all sensor nodes report data through the cluster heads to the sink.","PeriodicalId":155486,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE International Symposium on a World of Wireless, Mobile and Multimedia Networks & Workshops","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133444898","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, a novel two layered scheduling approach that addresses this challenge in a UMTS based HSDPA network is presented. The first layer carries out resource reservation for different traffic classes while the second layer dequeues packets on the basis of the reported channel quality indicator value and buffer occupancy. Simulation results show that the algorithm has low latency and jitter for VoIP services, whilst achieving better total cell throughput and fairness properties in comparison to several other well known scheduling algorithms. The performance of the algorithm for video streaming has also been evaluated in terms of peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR).","PeriodicalId":155486,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE International Symposium on a World of Wireless, Mobile and Multimedia Networks & Workshops","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131097127","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The adoption of the WiMAX technology for remote areas, for example, can address challenging scenarios in a cost-effective manner. While WiMAX Forum documents describe an architecture that inherently supports Quality of Service and mobility, several areas are left uncovered. We present an architecture which integrates WiMAX, Quality of Service and mobility management frameworks over heterogeneous networks, developing mechanisms for seamless handovers. Our approach takes into consideration the expected deployment of, on the one hand, the IEEE 802.21 (Media Independent Handover) proposed standard and, on the other, the IETFstandardized Next Steps in Signalling framework. The first contributions of this paper comprise a specification of the mechanisms for make-before-break vertical handovers taking Quality of Service signalling into account and the integration in a heterogeneous environment. The latter contribution is an empirical evaluation of the proposed architecture using a testbed demonstrator. We quantify the processing delays of the main components in our prototype implementation when a terminal hands over between different access technologies, demonstrating the potential of the proposed architecture.","PeriodicalId":155486,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE International Symposium on a World of Wireless, Mobile and Multimedia Networks & Workshops","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134355758","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, multiple retransmissions per link along an n-hop path leads to significant channel usage inefficiency and poor end-to-end performance. We propose a novel cooperative diversitybased multi-copy relaying (CDMR) scheme for wireless mesh networks. CDMR improves system performance by effectively utilizing available network resources, allowing neighboring (helper) nodes along a selected route to cooperatively deliver (as opposed to using retranmissions) packets to the final destination. CDMR operates in two phases: helper establishment and cooperatively delivery. The fundamental challenges are to identify effective helpers and to synchronize helper transmissions in order to avoid collisions. CDMR provides a simple and effective solution with low overhead. Simulation results show that (even with just one helper node), CDMR is able to reduce retransmissions and improve end-to-end delay by 39% to 86% depending on the path length.","PeriodicalId":155486,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE International Symposium on a World of Wireless, Mobile and Multimedia Networks & Workshops","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132729796","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to support mobile users and seamless handover between the access points, the authentication delay has to be reduced. Many proposed fast authentication schemes rely on trust models that are not appropriate in multi-operator environment. Here, we propose two certificate based authentication schemes such that the authentication is performed locally between the access point and the mesh client. We consider both powerful and constraint mesh clients and we propose certificate sets to decrease the au- thentication latency. We compare our proof-of-concept implementation to current widely used authentication methods like EAP-TLS, and we conclude that our proposed authentication scheme is considerably faster in all considered scenarios.","PeriodicalId":155486,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE International Symposium on a World of Wireless, Mobile and Multimedia Networks & Workshops","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132730880","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
