Buoycrete is a light-weight concrete that is able to float and does not dissolve in water. Buoycrete is based on a unique combination of different materials. This paper will start with an overview of concrete structures in combination with fabrics and will present the structural behavior, construction methods and applications of Buoycrete. It demonstrates that Buoycrete combined with fabric formwork creates new possibilities for a broad kind of applications, for instance, the realization of façade elements, shell structures and civil engineering.","PeriodicalId":15507,"journal":{"name":"Journal of civil engineering and architecture","volume":"3 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87481964","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is an emblematic model of the requirement that deals with the factors of its environment, like sun, wind, ground, shadow and flora, forcing some designers to migrate from usual design methodologies, indifferent to these design parameters, and they are careful only to the “laws of form”, in search of criteria and fine calculation tools to optimize the configuration and the structure of buildings, in order to ensure that they can be managed as “passively” as possible. What it means, with the minimum contribution of plants to ensure the best satisfaction of comfort and psychological needs of users: not only lighting, sunbathing, ventilation, thermal comfort in summer and winter, acoustic comfort, but also view characteristics, quality of lighting and sociological aspects. In general dialectic between artifice and nature, the theme of dug architecture today is faced not only as one of the most interesting and rich suggestions, but also as one of those, in which the reflection on objectives, methodologies and tools is longer necessary, to the identification of a new way of urban living and effective solutions against energy consumption.","PeriodicalId":15507,"journal":{"name":"Journal of civil engineering and architecture","volume":"17 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79858598","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

So, it must be considered when designing a building structure. The standards provide several types of design methods for that propose, used for single elements, parts of structure or the structure as a whole. The fire design of columns is important both for new project as for remodel buildings and also for verification of the residual resistance of columns that have suffered a fire accident. In this way, the aim of this work is to analyze numerically different ways of fire exposure to check the compressive strength of the columns when subjected to fire and the influence of the adjacent walls to a column in case of fire. The thermal advanced analysis of the sections columns was performed using the finite element software, Abaqus CAE, where the standard fire curve, ISO 834 (International Organization for Standardization 834), was used, with 4 h of fire duration. It was possible, with the two methods used in this work, to compare them to verify which model is more conservative and which is closer to the advanced numerical model, for calculating temperatures in the column section. It was checked that the walls act as thermal insulators, protecting part of the columns from the convection and radiation of the fire. Consequently, the effects of raising the temperature over the compressive resistance of the reinforced concrete column, were reduced.","PeriodicalId":15507,"journal":{"name":"Journal of civil engineering and architecture","volume":"55 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82826186","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These structures were subjected during the winter of 2014 to an intensive earthquake sequence. The dynamic characteristics of two bell towers were measured in situ. Subsequently the dynamic and earthquake response of each bell tower was numerically simulated employing 3-D dynamic elastic numerical simulations taking into account the soil-foundation deformability. It is demonstrated that the soil-foundation-structure interaction influences the dynamic and earthquake response predictions for this structure quite significantly. It also demonstrates the usefulness of such in-situ testing towards formulating realistic numerical models in order to yield realistic predictions of the dynamic and earthquake response of the examined structures. The obtained numerical analyses utilize the earthquake ground motion which was recorded at close distance from both bell towers. The numerical predictions of the earthquake response of both bell towers are utilized to draw conclusions of their actual earthquake performance. It is concluded that the soil-foundation interaction was a critical response mechanism. The newly built RC (reinforced concrete) bell towers performed satisfactorily.","PeriodicalId":15507,"journal":{"name":"Journal of civil engineering and architecture","volume":"67 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73164727","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thermal comfort and human psychology, are not taken into consideration at all. It is far from sustainable architecture to produce more than necessary and low-cost flats on the land used. During the Pandemic Process we live in today, people of all ages are not obeying the “stay at home, stay healthy” warnings and other prohibitions imposed by the medical community, this is due to the fact that people do not feel a sense of belonging to the house they live in. The duty of modern architects, is to design more livable environments. In this article, two examples, one positive and the other negative, are discussed as field work for a better understanding of psychological architecture. The first example is the Pruitt-Igoe site in the city of St. Louis in USA. The second comparative example is the Samanbahce houses in Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus, made of adobe brick, a traditional building material for families with insufficient financial means.","PeriodicalId":15507,"journal":{"name":"Journal of civil engineering and architecture","volume":"13 5 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83358665","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
