If radiation measurements are separated into two components, i.e., sky without the beam of the sun, and the beam of the sun, then the incident solar power on a flat surface with any azimuth and tilt can be estimated with reasonable accuracy. This paper shows daily harvest estimates made from twelve months of solar radiation measurements at a desert site in West Texas near the town of Toyah, latitude 31°. The key findings are. The best all-year fixed tilt angle for a south-facing panel is 30° (i.e., the “use latitude tilt” rule). Fixed tilt adjustments at equinoxes to 10° and 50° adds 5% to the annual daily energy harvest. South-facing, single-axis tracking with 25° fixed-tilt provides 31% more annual energy than a 30° fixed mount. Double-axis tracking provides 38% more annual energy than a 30° fixed mount. Double-axis tracking is only marginally better than single-axis tracking (i.e., annual energy increase of 38% compared to 31%).","PeriodicalId":154402,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Energytech","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128971088","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The harsh marine environment raises high demand on the foundation design of offshore wind turbine. Earthquake loading is one of the most significant factors which should be considered in the design phase. In this paper, a group of earthquake centrifuge tests were conducted on a physical model of a wind turbine with tripod foundation. The seismic responses of both wind turbine and foundation soil were analyzed in terms of the recorded accelerations, pore water pressures, lateral displacements and settlements. The results were also compared with those measured in the previous research on monopile foundation. It is demonstrated that the tripod foundation can provide better resistance in the lateral displacement and structural settlement under earthquake loading.","PeriodicalId":154402,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Energytech","volume":"81 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125694187","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Ford Focus Electric vehicle program includes all of these products and stand-alone inverters for the Fisker Karma, plus assorted components for other global customers. Incorporating advanced technologies into automotive power electronics remains in the forefront for next generation inverters. Smart product development will satisfy an emerging market for achieving high power density, high temperature capability, and high efficiency inverters with Wide Band Gap (WBG) devices utilizing both GaN and SiC in diodes and switches. It is essential that designs for motor power inverters, DC/DC converters, and in-vehicle chargers be based on a modular, scalable platform that will address the needs of electric and hybrid electric vehicles across a wide range of power requirements. The designs must meet objectives which are not new but need restating: Achieve lower cost targets (lower component and system costs); Develop new component technologies to meet high temperature and high power density requirements (WBG devices, electronics, bulk capacitor); Design of components and system architecture to meet scalability goals; Improve manufacturability of sub-system components These system design challenges will trickle down to component suppliers and, in particular the WBG community. Exposure to these attributes early in the component development process will speed up innovative automotive product development.","PeriodicalId":154402,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Energytech","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126501307","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The use of rotor tip-fan for enhancing both power conversion as well as low wind speed operation of wind turbines is investigated. It is proposed that tip-fans operating in the tangential directions create a tangential force that enhances the rotor thrust. Experiments were carried out in New Mexico State University wind tunnel to investigate the effect of tip-fans on the turbine performance. Furthermore, initial results of wind tunnel testing showed that more net power is extracted from the wind when tip-fans are ON than when tip-fans are OFF. It is concluded that the wind turbine performance is greatly affected by tip-fans which enhance the rotor speed at low wind speed. The present experimental results suggest that the performance of the proposed system is considerably greater than that of a bare wind turbine. This paper presents developing a mathematical model for wind turbines with tip-fan attached to each blade's tip.","PeriodicalId":154402,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Energytech","volume":"73 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126344873","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Data from one 80 m and four 50 m towers located within a range of 200 km in western Nevada, U.S., operated from August 2003 to March 2008 were used in the analysis. The average multi-annual wind speed did not show significant increase trends with increased elevation, the differences are mainly governed by the complexity of the topography including local circulations and channeling. Due to a slower increase of the standard deviation of the wind speed compared to the increase of the average wind speed, the turbulence intensity slowly decreased with an increase of the average wind speed. The wind speed was modeled using the Weibull distribution, while the wind direction was modeled using the von Mises distribution. In spite of differences in the basic wind speed statistics, the auto- and cross-correlations show a strong coherence between the wind speed and direction with slowly decreasing amplitude of the multi-day periodicity with increasing lag periods. A non-zero centerline of the diurnal component in the autocorrelation function indicated a possible long-term periodicity. Besides a pronounced diurnal periodicity at all locations, the spectral analysis showed significant annual periodicity with similar characteristics at all five locations.","PeriodicalId":154402,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Energytech","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121390679","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The charger can directly charge individual battery cells based on their state-of-charge (SOC) using multilevel converter topology. In multilevel converter, individual cells are connected in series on the DC side of the converter. By choosing switching pattern and their duration in a combined manner, the charging current in each cell of the converter can be controlled very competently. The technique using diode-clamped multilevel converter is an excellent candidate for the unification of the charger and the individual cell current controller. The proposed control technique in balancing the individual cell charging currents is verified for different operating conditions.","PeriodicalId":154402,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Energytech","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132539797","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We developed a battery safety risk assessment tool by using a modified FMEA method with the RPN concept. To validate this concept we applied the tool to the CTIA LiB safety certification program and evaluated the latent safety risk level of the approved battery models, which enable us to predict the probability of a model's safety incident in the field. To realize this idea we adopted concepts of “system integration effects” and “add additional evaluation factors” to the standard's test items. In conclusion the RPN of the each cell model shows the latent safety risk level of the battery.","PeriodicalId":154402,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Energytech","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122915650","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
