This study investigated the potential of freezing pre-treatment in combating this potential problem. Freezing of birch (Betula pubescens) wood was done inside a refrigerator at –20°C for 90 hours followed by high temperature drying at 120°C. The modulus of elasticity and modulus of rupture were determined. Pre-freezing reduced the degrading effects of high temperature drying on the strength wood in the radial direction while no significant effect occurred in the tangential direction. In the radial direction, the effect is more pronounced on the modulus of elasticity than the modulus of rupture. The limitation of the significance of pre-freezing to the radial direction suggests that there is more improvement in cell rigidity resulting in higher resistance to the harmful effect of high temperature drying in the radial direction than in the tangential direction.","PeriodicalId":154257,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Institute of Wood Science","volume":"77 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132450652","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However the deterioration in mechanical properties associated with it seems to be a major limitation of its use in the seasoning of some wood species. As in conventional drying, both the modulus of elasticity and modulus of rupture increase with decreasing moisture content. High temperature drying does not seem to constitute a meaningful threat to the mechanical properties of this species and hence its use is strongly recommended. The low effect of high temperature drying on this species strongly reinforces the results of the previous studies on other species that the effect of this technique is both species and property dependent.","PeriodicalId":154257,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Institute of Wood Science","volume":"226 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114424398","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A single-fluted tungsten-carbide router bit (12 mm dia., 18 000 rpm), with a rake angle of 15° was used in this experiment, in which the depth of cut was 1.5 mm and feed speed was 4.5 m/min. The router bit machined the edge of the board, moving along the full length before returning to repeat the cycle. The tool was examined for the extent of wear after complete failure had occurred. The result found that the wear pattern was similar in the oil-palm based particleboard and the wood-based particleboard, but the former is twice more abrasive compared to the latter. Microscopic examination of the cutter edge reveal a greater incidence of micro-fracture when cutting the oil-palm based particleboard, indicating the presence of hard impurities in the composite. From an economic perspective, the tooling cost for machining oil-palm based particleboard is estimated to be twice of the cost for machining wood-based particleboard. This study shows that the machining properties of oil-palm based particleboard will be a primary concern, if it is to find widespread application as a potential substitute for wood-based particleboard.","PeriodicalId":154257,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Institute of Wood Science","volume":"78 Suppl 1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129203436","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Experiments were carried out to study the effect of temperature, liquid ratio (phenol to wood ratio) and catalyst content on liquefaction efficiency. Liquefaction efficiency of 49% to 82% was achieved under different reaction conditions. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) indicated that the main effect of all the factors and interaction effect of the linear component of liquid ratio and the quadratic component of catalyst content are significant on liquefaction efficiency at the 5% level of significance. Based on the ANOVA, a non-linear regression equation was obtained to predict the liquefaction efficiency for rubber wood meal at a given experimental condition (temperature, liquid ratio and catalyst content). The liquefaction efficiency was found to be more sensitive at the lower levels of factors. There was no significant increase in liquefaction efficiency above 120°C at any liquid ratio. The residual contents after liquefaction were characterised by FTIR spectroscopy. The spectra of the residual content indicated a complete dissolution of lignin and hemicellulose leaving some cellulosic part of wood as a residual.","PeriodicalId":154257,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Institute of Wood Science","volume":"505 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123199682","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It has been shown that an optimised drying schedule can be developed that allows for the biological variability of timber. Experimental testing of the schedules for hardwood timber, Eucalyptus paniculata (grey ironbark) from New South Wales in Australia has shown that the experimental results for 50% and 70% quality levels are within the bounds of the predictions, but the results for a 90% level are difficult to explain. Both experimental results and simulation predictions agree that greater variability in timber properties both decreases the profit and results in the maximum profit being given at lower values of the quality level.","PeriodicalId":154257,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Institute of Wood Science","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121708304","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Wood specimens of nine Malaysian timber species were used in termite bioassay based on no-choice test using the subterranean termite Coptotermes gestroi Wasman. It was found that mass losses of all timber species were in the range of 0.54% to 8.82% after four weeks exposure to the test termite. Termite mortality levels and trends over the first three weeks of testing suggested that the extractive compounds of wood might act as natural toxicants that gradually but steadily increased the mortality rate of C. gestroi.","PeriodicalId":154257,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Institute of Wood Science","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115969768","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The research was focused on the main issues of engineering concerns regarding timber utilisation as a building material. Information was obtained by reviewing literature, interviewing traders and observing timber yards and construction sites. The study showed that there are many gaps between wood utilisation and research. It was observed that there are over 45 timber species on the market without quality control measures; timber classification and timber grading are mainly visual and subjective due to lack of strength data. Whereas research focus in advanced countries has been on use of non-destructive strength evaluation approaches to enhance timber utilisation for consumer satisfaction; the limited timber research in Uganda based on destructive techniques has been for comparison of species. Therefore, there is need to investigate strength properties of timbers as a first attempt to developing local timber standards. There is a need to explore modeling and non destructive evaluation techniques as a means of ascertaining predictable structural strength sizes in Uganda.","PeriodicalId":154257,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Institute of Wood Science","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121867064","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of this research was to determine and prioritize three types of machine which can be used in the secondary wood industries. After obtaining the information in the field of machines and technology characteristics, the criteria were divided into three major groups and 19 subsections. The comparisons of the mentioned criteria and subsections were done by experts and their weighing values were calculated by the analytical hierarchy process (AHP) method while group decision were conducted using Expert Choice software. The results indicated that among the 3 kinds of the machines, CNC machines should have the highest priority.","PeriodicalId":154257,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Institute of Wood Science","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129679484","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this exploratory study the relationship between power density and wood damage for thick western red cedar dried in a laboratory RFV dryer was evaluated. Two different types of drying strategies were assessed and the results were used to identify apparent trends and thus recommend the drying schedule that appears to minimize internal and surface checking.","PeriodicalId":154257,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Institute of Wood Science","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127266795","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Experimentation shows that the goal can be achieved by joining sawn wood and Engineered Wood Products (EWP) using steel tube fasteners with outside diameters up to 12.7 mm in conjunction with steel plate link elements. Wood members considered are Spruce lumber and Laminated Strand Lumber (LSL), with rectangular cross-sections. In such connections the steel plate link elements are located in slots cut into the ends of wood members so that the plates lie in planes parallel to wide faces of the joined members. Fasteners are placed in tight-fitting pre-drilled holes that penetrate both members and link elements. Connection specimens were axially loaded in tension at a loading rate that caused the maximum capacity to be reached in about 0.1 hours. All test specimens exhibited highly ductile failure, as well as good strength and stiffness. Some splitting occurred at failure in specimens with larger sized tube fasteners in Spruce sawn lumber members, reflecting that lumber has inherently low fracture resistance. However, there was no evidence of splitting in specimens with LSL members because it is a highly fracture resistant material. As revealed by the experimentation, it is possible to prevent premature splitting failures in connections that join either sawn wood or EWP provided that tube fasteners are correctly sized.","PeriodicalId":154257,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Institute of Wood Science","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121461881","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
