These primitives apply well to systems with large amounts of data, scalability concerns, heterogeneity concerns, temporal concerns, and elements of unknown pedigree with possible nefarious intent. These primitives form the basic building blocks for a Network of 'Things' (NoT), including the Internet of Things (IoT). This talk discusses the underlying and foundational science of IoT. Ambient Assistive Living (AAL) systems are being developed and are continually evolving in various areas. While most researchers focus on robust Activity Recognition techniques, this paper investigates some of the architectural challenges of the AAL systems. This study proposes a new system architecture that brings together the service-oriented architecture (SOA), Semantic Web technologies and other methods to address some of the shortfalls in the predecessor system implementations using off-the-shelf and open source components. A partial system implementation is then presented using the proposed system architecture. The system takes some of the key design aspects such as extensibility, reusability, scalability, and maintainability into consideration that can then be seen as a base to further extend the capability of monitoring, collecting, processing and accurately recognising complex or concurrent activities in its overall aim to support assistive living.","PeriodicalId":153118,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE Symposium on Service-Oriented System Engineering (SOSE)","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127499200","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In datacentre networks, LM enables flexibility in resource optimisation, fault tolerance and load balancing. However, in real time, the resource consumption and latency of live VM migration reduce these benefits to much less than their potential. In this paper, we present the results of an experimental study that evaluates LM in our unique high speed optical fibre network connecting Northern Ireland, Dublin and Halifax (Canada). We observe that using Pre-Copy LM extra large amounts of stressed memory leads to non convergence over high latency paths. However, using Post-copy LM the total migration time as well as downtime is dominated by specific memory utilisation patterns inside the virtualised guest. We experience variation in total migration time and downtime using Post-Copy LM considering Quality of Service (QoS) parameters, which can have significant impact in the cloud applications performance.","PeriodicalId":153118,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE Symposium on Service-Oriented System Engineering (SOSE)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130530489","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is observed that knowledge combination presently can be a way of innovating new products and new services for people. A challenging issue is how to combine human knowledge intelligently and creatively. It is proposed and visioned that Creative Computing can be one approach to tackling the above challenge. This paper starts with questions such as what Creative Computing is, what research scope Creative Computing has, what assumptions and principles Creative Computing is based on, what new methods Creative Computing will use, what applications Creative Computing will have, and how, in particular, Creative Computing will combine knowledge. By summarising related research studies and projects, it observes the advancement of Creative Computing has enabled broad use of computers in many domains, while combined knowledge are playing key roles in most of them. As an example, the paper will present an attempt for knowledge from different disciplines to be linked and combined via software semantic techniques. Furthermore, the combined knowledge provides the basis of creativity on generating new ideas and solutions, which not only helps on solving problems but also inspires and encourages on innovative activities. Overall, this paper aims to speculate and establish a prospect and imagination of Creative Computing as an effective way for connecting and combining various and vast amount of human knowledge.","PeriodicalId":153118,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE Symposium on Service-Oriented System Engineering (SOSE)","volume":"88 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125456455","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Similarly, most integration of digital technology with live performance is bespoke, an adaption of practice and enabling technology that solves only a single creative problem -- that of the specific work being created. This paper takes a different approach, which through considering practice across the range of live performance traditions contributing to contemporary digital performance activity, is able to propose a generic model of live performance which is able to account for the processes and moment to moment connections within live performance across a wide range of styles and genres. The approach is non-taxonomic, but is based on set theory and Boolean logic, the formal unfolding of a live performance is considered as the sum of individual performances generated by semi-autonomous performers. Each performer enacting a series of decisions based on their perceptions of the overall state of the performance (and each others' activity) and a rule-set -- which may be explicit or implicit. Taking a view similar to that of Susan Broadhurst and others in seeing digital performance as an extension of existing performance traditions rather than as a completely, or mainly, new performative genre, the generic model of live performance is then extended to provide a rationale for the integration of digital technology with live performance which does not depend on specific activities or alterations of existing practice by artists or on features belonging to specific performance traditions. The application of the model in a prototype system is briefly described and some further potential implications of the model to provide a framework for analysis of existing digital performance and a template for future creative exploration are identified.","PeriodicalId":153118,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE Symposium on Service-Oriented System Engineering (SOSE)","volume":"18 14","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133424443","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Technology companies have dedicated resources and personnel to research into IoT and machine-to-machine (M2M) communication. Internet of Things really involves primarily incorporating sensors to machines and everyday objects. The data from the sensors need to be leveraged by analyzing the data in real time. Cloud applications are tools that help us leverage this acquired data. The objects, tools and environments that we constantly monitor in our daily lives can be made smart and connected to the cloud. This paper is focused on implementing a typical IoT application using a Texas Instrument based MSP430 microprocessor and a cloud based Thingspeak Application. Accessible and popular coding tools such as Processing and Open Frameworks, as well as the rise of hack spaces have significantly contributed to increased activity in this field. However, beyond art-technology curation and historical contextualisation, evaluation of the resulting artefacts is in its infancy, although several general models of creativity - and its evaluation - exist. There is a perceived distinction between human and computer creativity, whereas we argue that they are effectively the same thing. Computers are made and programmed by people, so it makes sense to measure the creativity of the human influence behind the machine, rather than viewing computers as truly autonomous entities. By concatenating and enhancing existing models of creativity, we propose a framework that takes these issues into account, with a view to evaluating creative work that uses the computer as a medium more effectively.","PeriodicalId":153118,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE Symposium on Service-Oriented System Engineering (SOSE)","volume":"343 7","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120892237","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
