The system operates in burst mode transmission and the synchronization is achieved using a fixed preamble at the beginning of each data packet. The preamble is differentially modulated by a unique bit pattern, marker, which make it possible to perform code and frame synchronization simultaneously. Unlike other previous schemes, all preamble bits equally contribute to the acquisition process. The system performance measured in terms of packet loss probability for a given packet and preamble length. It is shown that this scheme greatly outperforms the conventional search-lock acquisition schemes which utilize non-coherent detection.","PeriodicalId":152724,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of GLOBECOM '95","volume":"106 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131002436","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In these networks, the link speeds will move up to gigabits per second and traffic control will become extremely difficult. Moreover, these networks will contain a very large number of physical and logical elements, all these elements will need to be managed and this may rapidly lead to an information explosion. As a consequence, many traditional control and management techniques will no longer be appropriate. Other approaches such as artificial intelligence (AI) have to be considered. This paper concentrates on this issue and highlights the necessity for the use of AI in the management of broadband networks.","PeriodicalId":152724,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of GLOBECOM '95","volume":"249 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130746183","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For this purpose, we consider discrete-time finite-buffer queueing models. We first propose a simple approximate formula for the cell loss probability in terms of the tail distribution of the queue length in the corresponding infinite-buffer queue. Since the tail distribution has a simple asymptotic expression in many situations, we revisit the asymptotic analysis of the tail distribution. Furthermore we consider specific source traffic models which are particularly important in practice. The formula allows heterogeneous sources and each source is characterized only by a small number of parameters so that they meet engineering requirements. Combining those results, we propose a new call admission control (CAC) scheme which is based on the the cell loss probability as a measure of quality of services.","PeriodicalId":152724,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of GLOBECOM '95","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132904345","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The demonstration includes: simple and fast channel-tuning capability with channel switching time <5 ns, high speed optical multiplexing and demultiplexing (16 Gb/s) with a potential of reaching 100 Gb/s, and relaxed synchronization requirement for multi-access packet networks. To achieve these goals, two novel ideas in lightwave technologies and network architecture, namely fast channel-tunable transmitters and destructive-writing scheme, are implemented. We believe these schemes have great chance to overcome the asperity of realizing ultrahigh-speed (/spl sim/100 Gb/s) optical TDM networks.","PeriodicalId":152724,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of GLOBECOM '95","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134458128","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The problem has been successfully solved by the path-based partition method, network reduction technique, and the combination of the two. The path-based partition algorithm, however, requires repeated execution of a path-search procedure in an attempt to locally minimize the total number of subproblems generated. We propose a cut-based partition algorithm based on the minimum cut separating the source from the remaining network nodes. This cut-based algorithm makes no attempt to locally minimize the number of subproblems. Instead, the algorithm leads to a great reduction of the computation time for the partitioning of each subproblem. Experimental results show the superiority of the cut-based algorithm over the path-based algorithm especially for complex networks. By further employing the network reduction technique, our cut-based partition algorithm outperforms the path-based partition algorithm for all benchmarks and random sparse or dense networks. Based on the cut-based partition algorithm, we further present an incremental method of computing the terminal-pair reliability for hierarchical networks. The incremental method results in minimal recomputation of the reliability should the network configuration change.","PeriodicalId":152724,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of GLOBECOM '95","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131323228","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is assumed that the optical switching nodes are equipped with a limited and scalable set of wavelength converters which can be used by any subset of incoming optical-connections. The proposed model, called the interconnected-layered-graph, provides an exact solution of the optimal routing and wavelength assignment problem in wavelength convertible networks with arbitrary number of wavelength converters at each node. A dynamic routing and wavelength assignment scheme, which is based on the proposed interconnected-layered-graph model, is also presented and it is evaluated for various network configurations.","PeriodicalId":152724,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of GLOBECOM '95","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133835649","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this technique, the high-rate bit transmitted data is serial to parallel converted into low-rate bit streams in a similar fashion to multicarrier or multitone modulation. However, in contrast to the multicarrier method, we modulate each low-rate bit stream using direct-sequence spread-spectrum on a single carrier. To illustrate the potential and merits of the proposed method as an alternative technique for high-speed transmission for wireless personal communications, various simulation results over multipath fading channels are presented.","PeriodicalId":152724,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of GLOBECOM '95","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115572088","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This algorithm can provide much better performance with the same order of complexity than the reduced states sequence estimator (RSSE). The algorithm, termed estimated future decision feedback algorithm (EFDFA), was originally proposed for the problem of noncoherent decoding with multiple-symbol overlapped observations and is now reformulated for the problem of ISI inflicted channels. The EFDFA uses the RSSE as a building block. The performance of the overall algorithm is much better than the RSSE part alone. The performance improvement is achieved by using estimated future symbols in the decision process. The future symbols are estimated by RSSE decoding time-reversed blocks of the input. An analysis of the performance of the EFDFA based on the performance of the RSSE is introduced.","PeriodicalId":152724,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of GLOBECOM '95","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114420726","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The considered protocols are based on collision resolution techniques. Previous analytical evaluations show that these techniques represent a suitable solution for handling mixed traffic, consisting of speech and data, because they allow one to decouple the speech access procedure from the data access one. In the previous analytical works, a single cell scenario has been considered, assuming a radio channel with capture and errors. We present a simulation study that validates the analytical model, and extends the study to cellular scenarios. Different reuse factors are considered. The simulation includes the reservation traffic that affects the performance noticeably. The study presented is restricted to speech users only. The results of the simulation study about in-slot, decoupling RRA protocols in a cellular system with Rayleigh fading and shadowing are included.","PeriodicalId":152724,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of GLOBECOM '95","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114765872","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
