SAE 1049 SAE 1049

{"title":"SAE 1049","authors":"","doi":"10.31399/asm.ad.cs0257","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.31399/asm.ad.cs0257","url":null,"abstract":"\u0000 1049 is a wrought medium-carbon (carbon = 0.46-0.53%) non-alloy steel that is used in the normalized, cold worked, or quenched and tempered condition. 1049 may also be flame or induction hardened, nitrided, or nitrocarburized. This steel is widely used for moderately and highly stressed parts that require higher strength levels than can be achieved by the lower carbon grades, and where the expense of an alloy steel is not justified. Owing to its low hardenability, its use in the quench hardened and tempered condition is not recommended for large sizes, as the improvement in mechanical properties over the normalized condition is insufficient to justify the additional cost of heat treatment. This alloy may be considered for a wide variety of applications where one or more of the following properties are important: resistance to corrosion, prevention of product contamination, ease of fabrication, attractive surface, ease of cleaning, or good strength and oughness at cryogenic temperatures. Past users of ATI 302 are generally now using ATI 304 because argon oxygen decarburizationtechnology has made lower carbon levels more easily attainable and economical. ATI 302 may be preferred over ATI 304 for temper rolled products or in other instances where its higher carbon content enables it to meet certain yield strength and tensile strength requirements while maintaining a higher level of ductility (elongation) versus that of the lower carbon ATI 304.
