The stabilizers were added to the soils in concentrations of (0.25-2) % Biopolymers, (1-3) % Bentonite and 2% PVAc. The samples were classified according to AASHTO as A-5 (slty-sand) and ML group (inorganic silts, sfine sands with low plasticity) based on USCS classification system. Geotechnical tests carried out on both natural untreated and treated samples showed that the natural soil samples gave OMC values of between (11.7-14.97) %, MDD (1644-1453.6) Kg/m3, and soaked CBR (2-6) %. 1% Guar gum, 1 % Xanthan gum, 3% Bentonite and 2% Poly vinyl Acetate were deduced to be optimal mixes for improved strength. However, Guar gum was observed to be the best stabilizer. With the TDRAMS model, 1% Guar gum reduced the failure susceptibility indices of the road by 11.02 % (i.e. from 127 to 113). However, for maximum benefits to be achieved from the stabilization, other factors like provision of good drainage facilities, adequate road sections etc. must be provided. This will help in improving the strength of the subgrade soils and overall durability of the road.","PeriodicalId":151760,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Civil Engineering and Urbanism","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121189990","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To better compare, it was assumed that external loading conditions and technical features of structural elements were the same. To determine the limits of effective parameters in fine (CL-ML) and coarse grains (SC-SM), according to the soil specifications of the stations A2 to L2 in in Mashhad urban railway line 2 (Iran), Hardening Soil Model (HS) was used. Modeling started with a horizontal and vertical distance of 2 meters and increased to a distance of 4 meters. The parameters of the soils including angles of internal friction, cohesion, density and elastic modulus and the distance between anchors have been selected to present the prediction model. All parameters of the soils have been used for multiple regression and artificial neural network modeling statistical analysis. To present a prediction model, 5 parameters including internal friction angles of soil, cohesion, soil density, distance between anchors and elastic modulus have been selected and all of them except final parameter have been used to analyze multiple regression and artificial neural network modeling. The results showed that the best regression model that could be presented is the correlation of 94% between measured and predicted values. The prediction effectiveness of the neural network model has been found to be acceptable as they produced higher correlation coefficient (99%) between the variables and for the prediction of the factor of safety.","PeriodicalId":151760,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Civil Engineering and Urbanism","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115704831","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper deals with performance of composite connection of embedded steel joist in concrete girder with appropriate numerical analysis. The proposed model is validated by experimental data presented in reference studies. performance of connection of steel beam to concrete girder are, however, assessed through different approaches including influences of embedment ratio, double web angle, size of web angle, tie distances, studs, steel beam with flanges cut in connection zone and plates in web of steel beam. As a result, an appropriate embedment ratio is offered to achieve maximum bending capacity of the connection. Using double web angles at the embedment region, however, reduce the ratio. Damage analyses show that bending capacity of the concrete girder slightly reduces in the connection zone. Better performance of steel plate installed in web at connection zone is also observed among composite connection approaches. Using low tie distances at connection zone increases capacity by 10%. Performance of double web angle is, further, compared under hysteretic and monotonic loadings. The ratio of L/h in hysteretic behavior of connection was 20% higher than that of monotonic loading.","PeriodicalId":151760,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Civil Engineering and Urbanism","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-03-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130309298","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

From literature, many experimental works have been carried out on simply supported beams with varying concrete characteristic strengths and percentages of reinforcement. However, none was on beam with fully or partially restrained ends. Hence the focus of this research work is to determine the effective moment of inertia ( ) of a cracked L-section of reinforced concrete beam with full end restrained. Three existing models for determining “ were used in the estimation of the deflection of the beam, and these existing models were modified in order to get a proposed model that gives a more accurate prediction of the deflection. At service load of 9.81 kN/m, the estimated deflections using the values of from the existing three models and the proposed model were 2.01 mm, 9.81 mm, 2.68 mm and 8.37 mm respectively, while the actual deflection was 8.14 mm. From these results, the proposed model predicts more accurately the deflection of the L-beam than the three existing models, however, it is recommended that further research should still be carried out on reinforced concrete beams with fixed beam-column joints, in order to get a model that can predict more accurately, the effective moment of inertia for other types of beams such as rectangular and T-beams.","PeriodicalId":151760,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Civil Engineering and Urbanism","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128033752","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Vinasse represents a substantial renewable energy resource, through anaerobic digestion to produce biogas. Although a variety of previous studies have measured biogas generation from anaerobic treatment of vinasse, no previous study has developed a general model to predict biogas production from anaerobic digestion of vinasse of any composition at a range of temperatures (mesophilic). The aim of this research was thus to build a first-order model VUMP (Vinasse Utilization for Methane Production) to predict methane generation from anaerobic treatment of vinasse from ethanol production, based on readily available inputs of initial vinasse composition and treatment temperature. Lab-scale anaerobic digesters were filled with 4 synthetic vinasse mixtures with differing initial values of chemical oxygen demand, nitrogen, potassium, phosphorous, and sulfur, operated at 3 temperatures each, for a total of 12 reactors. Based on data collected, a multiple linear regression equation (R = 0.80) was developed to predict first-order methane generation rate constant k. The selected best-fit model for k varied positively as functions of temperature, initial chemical oxygen demand, and the product of nitrogen and phosphorous. Preliminary validation indicated that the model predicted methane generation from commercial vinasse within 20%.","PeriodicalId":151760,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Civil Engineering and Urbanism","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131446252","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Smart and sustainable structures in this regard are required for smart sustainable urbanization, to be consistent with the progressive development of the world. Materials possessing a capability of adapting themselves with their environment, either in passive or active conditions, are known as smart materials and capable of bringing smartness into our structures. There are different types of smart materials that can be utilized in the construction of structures. Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs), fiber optics, piezoelectric materials, Magneto-Rheological (MR) fluids, Electro-Rheological (ER) fluids and magnetostrictive materials are the promising examples of smart materials that deserve increasing interest in civil engineering applications. Innovative applications of these materials in construction industry are investigated in this paper. Brief descriptions of the physical principles are provided, and the proof of concept demonstrations are presented. Advantages and limitations of the implementation of each material in civil structures are defined and the effectiveness of passive systems are discussed. It is concluded that SMAs are the best candidates among the available smart materials that can be used for earthquake-resistant design of structures. The suitability of SMAs as aseismic devices is then verified experimentally. It is also shown that materials with damping and stiffness properties changing by changes in stress/strain and/or acceleration are similarly useful for the purpose of earthquake protection of structures. Production and application of these types of smart materials, however, require further research but seems to be more attractive in the civil engineering profession.","PeriodicalId":151760,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Civil Engineering and Urbanism","volume":"85 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122972168","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
