This search aimed at the preparation of novel hybrid heterosteroids with structures especially non-ulcerogenic and anti-inflammatory activities. The heterocyclic steroids were formulated using simple and effective techniques. IR, H NMR, C NMR spectra and elemental microanalysis were used to characterize the synthesized compound. The in vivo anti-inflammatory activity of some of these compounds was studied using carrageenan-induced paw oedema assay. Also, the effect of the different compounds on the development of gastric mucosal damage induced in rats by 96% EtOH administration was studied. The most marked and sustained inhibition of the oedema response was observed with the administration of the low and high doses (25 and 50 mg/kg) of compounds 8, 4, 23, 14 as well as by the high dose of compound 32. There was no significant difference in the degree of oedema inhibition between the low and high doses of compounds 8, 23, 14 at all-time points in the study. All investigated compounds administered at (50 mg/kg) dose inhibited gastric mucosal lesions induced in rats by 96% EtOH administration. Compounds 4, 9, 11, 26, 32 were the most effective in inhibiting lesion formation. No lesions were observed after the administration of compounds 9, 26 at 50 mg/kg. These findings are approaching a distinctive chance to create fresh anti-inflammatory drugs that eliminate the ulcerogenic liabilities connected with drugs presently on the market.","PeriodicalId":15163,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Bioscience and Applied Research","volume":"27 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90450237","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Mistakes in medication administration are considered a significant issue that threatens a patient’s safety and may increase their hospital stay, treatment costs, and mortality rate. Medication errors commonly committed by nurses may include medication preparation or administration errors, which are associated with the highest risk areas in nursing practice. Methodology: A pretest-posttest, quasi-experimental, the observational design was used. Convenience sampling was employed to include all intravenous medication errors committed by nurses in three ICUs of Jordan University Hospital (pretest: 236 errors and post-test: 68 errors, respectively). A designed incident report was used for data collection. Data collection was carried out simultaneously in the three ICUs during nurses’ preparation and administration of intravenous medications over two months for pretest and posttest data (May and June 2018). A tailored evidencedbased educational program designed using Phillips's Manual of I. V. Therapeutics: Evidence-based Practice for Infusion Therapy was furnished to all registered nurses utilizing structured classroom lectures and on-the-job training; moreover, educational medals of common medications and illustration posters were used as additional reminders.Results and Conclusion: More than half of nurses were females and held bachelor’s degrees. Half of the observed medication errors were identified in the surgical ICU. Intravenous medication errors observed during the day shift were significantly higher in number than those in the night shift. A significant reduction in the number of medication errors was noted after the implementation of a bundle of interventions (i.e., there was a reduction from 236 errors to 68 errors). The growing amount of e-waste has caused a considerable challenge for policymakers to manage e-waste in an environmentally-sound mode in both developed and developing countries. Effective management of e-waste has become a global concern that is receiving growing attention due to the rapid increase in the quantity of e-waste. This is mainly attributed to the rapid technological innovation and shortening product’s useful lifespan coupled with the tendency of people to keep up with the advanced technologies. This study compared and critically appraised three e-waste management models (producer responsibility, not-producer responsibility, and sharing responsibility) currently applied in Malaysia and the United States of America (USA), in an attempt to explore best management practices for the collection and treatment of e-waste that can be adopted in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The data presented in this paper are secondary data obtained from a wide range of authoritative sources. This study recommends developing an e-waste national policy and regulatory framework to effectively manage the rapidly growing rate of e-waste in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.","PeriodicalId":15163,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Bioscience and Applied Research","volume":"10 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82992557","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The results revealed that the relative expression (2-∆∆Ct) of the IL17A gene was increased by 1.28 ± 0.29 fold in RA patients, and such profile was approximated in males (1.66 ± 0.58) and female (1.01 ± 0.28) patients.  Concerning PCR-amplified DNA sequences, out of the 10 encountered SNPs, two SNPs (rs8193038 and rs3819025) showed allele frequencies that exceeded 10%. The rs8193038 SNP allele and genotype frequencies showed no significant variations between RA patients and control. The second SNP (rs3819025) was observed to have three genotypes (AA, AG, and GG). Among these genotypes, it was observed that the homozygous genotype of the mutant allele (GG) was only recorded in patients with a frequency of 13.7%, while none of the control had this genotype. Such a difference was significant even after the correction of probability (pc = 0.05), and the associated OR was 15.34 (95% C.I.: 1.39 - 169.24). It was also observed that G allele showed a significant increased frequency in patients (25.5 vs. 12.2%; OR = 2.46; 95% C.I.: 1.14 - 5.30; p = 0.015), while A allele frequency was significantly decreased (74.5 vs. 87.8%; OR = 0.41; 95% C.I.: 0.19 - 0.88; p = 0.015). However, the significance in both cases was lost when the probability was corrected.  It was also observed that there was no significant impact of the rs3819025 SNP genotypes on the expression of the IL17A gene. In conclusion, the IL17A gene showed an increased expression in RA patients, and rs3024419 SNP is suggested to be associated with an increased risk to develop the disease in the Iraqi population.","PeriodicalId":15163,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Bioscience and Applied Research","volume":"33 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81341559","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The contamination of heavy metals is one of the serious threats to birds in the wetland ecosystem. In the present study, heavy metal exposure risk to birds in Burullus Lake was assessed. The concentrations of Cr, Ni, Pb, Cd, and Co in water, plant, and fish were determined in 10 bird habitats. A heavy metals' exposure risk assessment model to migratory birds in Burullus Lake had been done. It showed that small waders, represented by dunlin, are exposed to higher doses and risk than the waterfowls, represented by mallard. Evaluation of this risk to migratory birds could not be done using water exposure doses only, but food exposure including plant and fish must be included. It is a priority to perform more efforts to reduce serious contamination with Co and Ni. The risk for fish feeders can be summarized according to the following order: Co > Ni > Cd > Pb > Cr, while the risk for plant feeders is: Co > Ni > Cr > Cd > Pb. The health risk of heavy metal exposures was calculated using Target Hazard Quotient (THQ) and Hazard index (HI). Results showed that THQs for all metals were below the standard (<1), while HI values were lower than one except for Co and Cd. HI for these two metals are considered an appreciable hazard risk to human health. Therefore, it is recommended to analyze the heavy metal risk on a temporal basis.","PeriodicalId":15163,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Bioscience and Applied Research","volume":"59 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-04-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89750517","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The use of magnetic nanoparticles for blood DNA isolation offers several advantages including subjecting little mechanical stress to your sample, obtaining higher quality and quantity of DNA, and non-laborious procedures. In this study, we isolated genomic DNA using gelatin-coated magnetic nanoparticles from blood samples and test its use compare with three commercial blood DNA isolation kits. DNA purity and yield were assessed by measuring absorbance at A260/A280 and by agarose gel electrophoresis. The suitability of the isolated DNA for downstream applications was analyzed by endpoint PCR and Sanger sequencing. In this study, gelatin-coated magnetite particles for genomic DNA isolation provide an efficient, simple, and inexpensive method that does not require the use of commercial blood DNA Isolation Kit.","PeriodicalId":15163,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Bioscience and Applied Research","volume":"37 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89980880","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

EL-Mahmoudeyia canal exposed to excessive of industrial effluents which impact the living organisms especially fish. The herein results showed that higher concentrations of heavy metals (Pb, Zn, Cu, Fe, and Cd) were detected in water and fish samples collected from the polluted area in comparison with the reference area, especially in winter. The accumulation patterns of heavy metals in muscles of O. niloticus, were in the following order: Fe > Zn >Pb> Cu and Cd.The antioxidant enzymatic activities of (SOD, CAT, GPx and GST) and the lipid peroxidation biomarker MDA levels in muscles of O. niloticus collected from the polluted area were found to be significantly increased compared to that of the reference area. Meanwhile, there was a significant decrease in the GSH content level in muscles of O. niloticus collected from the polluted area compared to that of the reference area. A significant elevation in DNA damage frequencies was observed in fish collected from the polluted areas compared with those from the reference area. These noticeable alterations in the selected antioxidant enzymatic activities in muscles of the O. niloticus go in parallel with the remarkable elevation in the levels of the detected heavy metals in water from EL Mahmoudeyia canal, as a result of pollution in these areas. This study explored the utility of the DNA damage, the altered antioxidant enzymatic activities, GSH content and MDA level as biomarkers of aquatic pollution.","PeriodicalId":15163,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Bioscience and Applied Research","volume":"71 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85535783","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
