In this paper, three metropolitan ring architectures are considered and compared for resource and power utilization: Ethernet, Reconfigurable Optical Add-Drop Multiplexers (ROADM), and an optical packet switching (OPS) scheme called Packet Optical Add-Drop Multiplexers (“POADM”), which was recently proposed. Both single and multirate scenarios are investigated. In addition, a novel resource allocation strategy for POADM-based OPS multirate rings is proposed for the first time. We show through simulations that POADM allocates resources very efficiently such that multi-fiber rings can be avoided even for high loads. Results show that OPS with POADM can be up to 2 to 3 times more energy-efficient than competing technologies.","PeriodicalId":151401,"journal":{"name":"2012 16th International Conference on Optical Network Design and Modelling (ONDM)","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124102848","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We discuss both intra and inter data-center networking. For intra-datacenter networking, a single arrayed waveguide grating router based optical switch offers fully connected all-to-all parallel interconnection amongst thousands of racks to achieve high throughput and low-latency interconnection in a new flattened network topology. This new interconnection network named LION provides significant performance advantages over other electrical, optical, or hybrid interconnection networks in terms of available bandwidth per channel, end to end latency and throughput. For inter-datacenter networking, we investigate flexible bandwidth elastic optical networks designed to adaptively accommodate bursty and high capacity traffic between the data centers while supporting the traditional traffic in the background. Further, we demonstrate adaptive and real-time control of the spectral assignment and modulation format for each slice while achieving defragmentation to optimize the spectrum utilization under the dynamically varying traffic demands. The paper covers the intra- and inter- datacenter networking architecture, algorithm, control plane and simulation and experimental studies from the network testbed.","PeriodicalId":151401,"journal":{"name":"2012 16th International Conference on Optical Network Design and Modelling (ONDM)","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117132905","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, significant challenges still remain. Over time, the inherent technological differences between the IP and transport networks have deeply segmented their operation, leading to the carrier's organizational fragmentation and segregation of management competencies. Although these two networks are typically deployed in tandem, carriers still lack of tools capable of providing automated coordination of management procedures and orchestration of business practices between them, especially, in multi-vendor deployments. Overall, the separation of management functions between the “IP” and “transport” networks continues to be profound, and remains one of the major impediments hindering the expected convergence of IP and transport network services. To address this challenge, we present a roadmap for convergence from the point of view of network management, and describe an easy-to-deploy solution that can enable interoperation and coordinated actions between the IP and transport management systems already in place in carrier networks. This solution is being prototyped with special attention on multi-vendor network management scenarios.","PeriodicalId":151401,"journal":{"name":"2012 16th International Conference on Optical Network Design and Modelling (ONDM)","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125959994","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In many cases, their peak rate struggle to deliver HDTV video streams, which are widely acknowledged as one of the killer Internet applications in the near future. Fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) solutions are being deployed to address the problem of scarce capacity in the network access. However, their ability to increase access capacity by over two orders of magnitude could create substantial scalability problems as power consumption of current IP-centric network architectures in the metro and core nodes will scale linearly (or worse) with capacity increase. Long-reach passive optical networks were introduced as a solution to this scalability problem, since they considerably reduce cost and power consumption for network operators, by allowing optical bypass of a large number of metro nodes in the network. In this paper we report the results of a deployment study of a dual-parented protected, nation-wide LR-PON installation for Ireland and the UK, based on real dataset. We focus on further reducing the overall network power consumption by employing a protection mechanism that reduces the IP router capacity required for protection as well as the number of backup OLTs. We show that in a realistic LR-PON deployment up to a 40% reduction in power consumption can be achieved, compared to solutions adopting legacy 1+1 protection. This is accomplished by optimising the network deployment for energy efficient protection, and adopting a smart load balancing technique and a core node architecture that allows N:M protection of backup links.","PeriodicalId":151401,"journal":{"name":"2012 16th International Conference on Optical Network Design and Modelling (ONDM)","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124929898","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

When a process of lightpath establishment or release fails due to discarding of signaling packets on the network, some nodes are burdened with undesired optical path-connections remaining in themselves. It is possible that our conventional system requires a long time to eliminate such an incomplete lightpath. In this paper, we propose and implement a novel autonomous distributed control for elimination of incomplete lightpaths. In our proposed system, lightpath refreshing messages are generated and transferred by means of the same procedure as signaling. Thereby, when a lightpath establishment or release fails, any nodes can recognize the failures at about the same time because the sender does not transmit lightpath refreshing messages. As a result, the time required to eliminate incomplete lightpaths can be reduced, and furthermore the proposed system is sufficiently robust. Besides, our proposed signaling function is properly interlocked with a dynamic resource-adjustment control, and thus the status of usage of lightpaths in the network can automatically recover.","PeriodicalId":151401,"journal":{"name":"2012 16th International Conference on Optical Network Design and Modelling (ONDM)","volume":"68 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121341022","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Several solutions, typically exploiting optical switching technologies, have been proposed to reduce the excess of optical/ electronic/optical (OEO) signal conversions and electronic processing operations, which are known to be particularly power-hungry. However, most of the studies developed so far provide results that closely related to the specific case-study topologies under consideration, and the resulting conclusions may tend to be topology-dependent. In this paper, we consider a large set of randomly-generated topologies, characterized by different values of the network connectivity index (i.e., a measure of the average number of links per node within the network) and study the influence of this parameter on the energy consumption of different IP-over-WDM network architectures, namely Basic, Transparent and Opaque IP-over-WDM. We aim at quantifying how the the energy consumption of these different IP-over-WDM network architectures depends on network connectivity, geographical dimension and offered traffic.","PeriodicalId":151401,"journal":{"name":"2012 16th International Conference on Optical Network Design and Modelling (ONDM)","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115088666","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The VON Resource Broker consists of four blocks: resource manager, VON controller, resource allocator and resource configurator. In this paper, we evaluate the impact of the proposed VON Resource Broker on the provisioning of virtual GMPLS control planes and the performance of provisioning lightpaths within a virtual control plane through experimentation in the ADRENALINE Testbed. The obtained results show the trade off between the diminution of blocking rate of VON requests, through the provision of more virtual resources for the virtual control planes, and the deterioration of the virtual control plane performance (e.g. higher setup delay and higher blocking probability while provisioning lightpaths).","PeriodicalId":151401,"journal":{"name":"2012 16th International Conference on Optical Network Design and Modelling (ONDM)","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133028325","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Furthermore, the architecture of a node that can be managed by the proposed control plane is introduced, and a model for its power consumption evaluation is presented.
