There is no doubt that, long term, the use of such technologies has economic benefits for enterprises and companies. Despite this, however, the quality of the final result is often less than satisfactory, and machine translation systems are no exception, as editing of texts translated by using online translation services is still a demanding task. At the moment, producing high-quality translations using only machine translation systems remains impossible for multiple reasons, the main of which lies in the mysteries of natural language: the existence of sublanguages, abstract words, polysemy, etc. Since improving the quality of machine translation systems is one of the priorities of natural language processing (NLP), this article describes current trends in developing modern machine translation systems as well as the latest advances in the field of natural language processing (NLP) and gives suggestions about software innovations that would minimize the number of errors. Even though recent years have seen a significant breakthrough in the speed of information analysis, in all probability, this will not be a priority issue in the future. The main criteria for evaluating the quality of translated texts will be the semantic coherence of these texts and the semantic accuracy of the lexical material used. To improve machine translation systems, we should introduce elements of data differentiation and personalization of information for individual users and their tasks, employing the method of thematic modeling for determining the subject area of a particular text. Currently, there are algorithms based on deep learning that are able to perform these tasks. However, the process of identifying unique lexical units requires a more detailed linguistic description of their semantic features. The parsing methods that will be used in analyzing texts should also provide for the possibility of clustering by sublanguages. Creating automated electronic dictionaries for specific fields of professional knowledge will help improve the quality of machine translation systems. Notably, to date there have been no successful projects of creating dictionaries for machine translation systems for specific sub-languages. Thus, there is a need to develop such dictionaries and to integrate them into existing online translation systems.","PeriodicalId":151178,"journal":{"name":"Nizhny Novgorod Linguistics University Bulletin","volume":"32 3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130728821","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To ensure the high quality of foreign language education, our priorities must include the development of competences in the area of professional communication in foreign languages. In that regard, the article identifies pedagogical conditions conducive to fostering the socio-cultural competence and the successful development of the learner’s linguistic persona. The authors present mechanisms of implementing the said pedagogical conditions in the following areas: a) developing communication skills and competencies of foreign language instructors; b) modeling situations with communication barriers in diverse ethnocultural environments; c) acquiring and selecting ethnocultural information; d) integrating in-class and out-of-class activities in a foreign language; and e) establishing a good rapport between an instructor and her students. The authors go on to describe the methodological basis for designing the content of foreign language programs, identify optimal approaches to teaching and learning foreign languages, and reflect on the context of the intercultural paradigm in university-level foreign language education.","PeriodicalId":151178,"journal":{"name":"Nizhny Novgorod Linguistics University Bulletin","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125359520","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Employing the comparative-contrastive method and the method of computer analysis, the author seeks to compare and contrast the main corpus tools of the programs Sketch Engine, AntConc, and WordSmith Tools, focusing on texts from specialized periodicals about cinematography ‘Total Film’ and ‘American Cinematographer’ for 2019–2020. The primary goal of this comparison is to provide recommendations for optimal choice of tools and programs for obtaining certain types of information. The author processed the total volume of texts that contained over 900,000 words, using the functions “concordance”, “word list”, “collocations” + “word s etch”, “N-grams”, “keywords” in Sketch Engine and AntConc (Word-Smith Tools has only “concordance”, “wordlist,” and “keywords”). Information about specific tools available in various corpora is collected and presented in a specially developed table. Different software programs described in the article have functions that perform the same tasks, but there are some differences in how data is presented. Among the software programs featured in this case study, the Sketch Engine platform gives the most options for choosing personal settings. The “concordance” function shows the word in context, “Wordlist” shows all the words on a given list with a record of their frequency in the corpus. The “collocation” function (or “word s etch”) recognizes fixed expressions, “N-grams” finds phrases that comprise a certain number of elements, while the “ eywords” function allows users to identify words that are specific to a particular subject area. Information thus obtained from the corpora may be helpful in updating English LSP dictionaries and glossaries of cinematography. The theoretical significance of the present study lies in systematizing the material about existing corpus tools, while its practical value is in using the tools of three corpus programs for the study of cinematic discourse, understood here as language used by the community of movie goers and filmmakers in their discussions of cinematography in specialized periodicals ‘Total Film’ and ‘American Cinematographer’.","PeriodicalId":151178,"journal":{"name":"Nizhny Novgorod Linguistics University Bulletin","volume":"60 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123667246","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
