Only about half of that demand is met by domestic production, the availability and prices of rice directly impact on the welfare of the poorest Nigerian consumers due to the fact that consumption runs ahead of local production. The study examines and compares the technical, allocative and economic efficiency between improved and traditional rice farmers in Oriade local government area of Osun state. Primary data were collected from 60 traditional and 60 improved rice farmers. Data obtained was analyzed using Cobb-Douglas production and cost function. The result revealed that farm size and agrochemical were significant factors which influence both rice technologies in the area. The return to scale (RTS) reveals that both improved and traditional rice production were in stage II of production surface. The result of the cost frontier shows that labour, agrochemical and output were significant for both for both rice technologies while fertilizer and seed were significant for improved and traditional rice production, respectively. The mean technical efficiency for improved rice production is 0.84 and 0.329 for traditional rice production while allocative and economic efficiencies mean values for both improved and traditional rice are 0.931, 0.773, 0.861 and 0.278, respectively. Conclusively, there is existence of inefficiency in cost for both the traditional and improved rice technologies.","PeriodicalId":150128,"journal":{"name":"Trends in Agricultural Economics","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123917640","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Descriptive statistics, net benefit and margin analysis were employed to analyze the data. The result indicated that local varieties called marco (in Omo Nada) and kolesh (in Gojeb) are largely used by farmers and provide a yield ha-1 of 16.39 and 12.21 quintal, respectively through using fertilizer and spacing technology. The assessment of the market structure revealed that the largest volume (50%) of sale directly goes to the local consumers followed by the volume channeled to assemblers (28.5%) and retailers (21.5%). The margin analysis revealed that producers take the highest profit margin of 100 and 68.2% when the product is sold directly to the local consumers and retailers, respectively. But when hot pepper is channeled to Jima and Addis Ababa, producers get a profit margin of 53.3 and 42.8%, respectively making the respective total gross margin taken by the intermediaries to be 46.7 and 57.2 out of which the largest share is taken by the assemblers without having a significant value addition activity. Therefore, with the assumption that their possible linkage role can effectively be taken by the local wholesalers and retailers, banning of local assemblers from the market chain can be taken as one option for improving the efficiency of the chain. Low productivity, illegal act of actors in the chain, poor quality of product, low and fluctuating price, small and confined market place together with long market distance were found to be the major problems adversely influencing the production and marketing of hot pepper in the area.","PeriodicalId":150128,"journal":{"name":"Trends in Agricultural Economics","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129937212","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The period was delineated into the following sub periods, to take into account various policy regimes: 1961-1969, 1970- 1985, 1986-1993 and 1994-2007. Objectives of the study were to estimate growth rates of oil palm and groundnut output, yield, harvested area and determine their sources of output growth. Data used for the study was obtained from FAOSTAT and covered area (hectare), yield (hg ha-1), output (tonnes), the Log-linear regression model and Decomposition analysis were employed to determine the growth rates and sources of output growth, respectively. The findings showed that growth rate for groundnut output, yield and harvested area were increasing overtime except for the 1970-1985 period, where harvested area and output decreased and the 1961-1969 periods in which yield and output also decreased. The growth rate for oil palm harvested area and output for the1961-1969 decreased while the other sub periods had positive growth rates, there was no growth in yield for the 1961-1969, 1986-1993 and 1994-2007 periods. The main source of output growth was through expansion of area under cultivation for both crops. Policy implications focused on increasing productivity of land, labour and capital while encouraging the processing of groundnut and oil palm into a variety of products to improve their value and also enhance their industrial application so that farmers get a better return on their efforts to encourage further cultivation.","PeriodicalId":150128,"journal":{"name":"Trends in Agricultural Economics","volume":"95 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133686810","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A production function using maximum likelihood method is estimated and efficiency score of individual household is calculated using stochastic frontier analysis. The efficiency scores are regressed on variables including farm-household characteristics and degree of output market commercialization. The empirical evidence suggests that the elasticity of production to land size and biological inputs like chemical fertilizer, pesticide, fungicide and seed is positive and statistically significant. The average efficiency scores in two sample districts indicate that the production can be increased by 26-33% through improving efficiency in a given technological condition. The result suggests that the degree of commercialization has positive effect on technical efficiency. Furthermore, household characteristics like education, age, share of agriculture in total household income, sharecropping also have a significant effect on technical efficiency.","PeriodicalId":150128,"journal":{"name":"Trends in Agricultural Economics","volume":"125 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134453474","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For the study,30 numbers each of i. Fishermen and ii. Tourists were personally contacted. About 75% of the respondents depended mangrove area for fishing while coastal area was the source of fish catch for only 25% of sample respondents. Among the tourists respondents, only 3.3% were foreigners, 10% were from other states and the rest were domestic visitors. Most of tourists were young and middle aged and about 43% had a monthly income of Rs.15001 to 30000. It is understood that high income and educated people showed more interest in visiting places of natural origin. People who travelled by own vehicles had higher visitation rate of 50% than those travelling by hired vehicles owing to the high cost of hired vehicles. The principal products collected by local stakeholders were firewood, fodder and timber. The Individual Travel Cost Method (ITCM) was used to estimate the recreational value and the determinants of visitation rate. The marital status had a negative influence on visitation rate. It was found out that bachelors had made more frequent trips to PMF than the families. The monthly income was also significant and had the expected relationship. Travel cost had a significant influence on frequency of visits. The price elasticity of demand for recreational visit was estimated to be -0.1566. It indicated that the visitation rate was inelastic with respect to the travel cost i.e. one per cent increase in travel cost would result in only 0.1566% reduction in visitation rate. The option value of conserving the PMF was estimated using contingent valuation method using the bidding game technique. The fishermen were willingness to pay an amount of Rs.1763 towards internalizing externalities. The catchment area, monthly income and duration of fishing were positively related to Willingness To Pay (WTP) and were significant. It is implicit from the analysis that duration of fishing and fishing area (near mangrove) influenced the WTP significantly. Household expenditure of a fisherman had been positively related to the duration of fishing. The major findings of the regression results regarding the overall impact of PMF was that the people who entered into fishing and other mangrove dependent occupations had extensively improved their standard of living. The additional money generated from tourism by tourist dependents encouraged the households to incur more on luxurious goods. Positive externalities like shoreline protection, increased fish catch and enhanced income, utilization of non â-“timber forest products, control of soil erosion, water retention and purification of water by mangrove forests were the other environmental benefits. The study came out with the policy that the optimal exploitation of mangrove biosphere by the end users s","PeriodicalId":150128,"journal":{"name":"Trends in Agricultural Economics","volume":"59 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115710626","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Data for the study were obtained from records kept by five firms in the area. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics, Herfindahl index, analysis of variance and multiple regression analysis. The result showed that the wholesale frozen fish market structure is perfectly competitive with an Herfindahl index of 0.211. The mean marketing margin per carton (20 kg) of the different species of frozen fish in absolute and relative terms were N 251.21 and 21.42%; N 373.56 and 12.5%; N 283.74 and 17.99%; N 358.61 and 13.48%; N 167.39 and 11.8% for sardinella, croaker, herring, original mackerel and horse mackerel, respectively. However, the mean marketing margin among the species of frozen fish was significantly different (F-cal cal 6.03>critical 2.39). The results further revealed that the supply of frozen fish was positively and significantly influenced by the prices of the commodity overtime. The short run and long run elasticities with respect to own price were 0.48 and 0.56; 0.29 and 0.62 ; 0.17 and 0.25 ;0.44 and 0.82; 0.38 and 4.67 for sardinella, herring, original mackerel, horse mackerel and croaker, respectively. Trading more on sardinella would give the wholesalers more in terms of marketing margin while increase in the price of croaker would be an incentive to increase its supply overtime.","PeriodicalId":150128,"journal":{"name":"Trends in Agricultural Economics","volume":"148 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116057742","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
