In terms of the severity of V. destructor infestation, the average percentage of infested bees in the first group was 16.06 ± 1.2%, the average percentage in the second group was 7.27 ± 0.71%, and the average in the third group was 1.69 ± 0.46%. Statistically significant differences were found between all honey samples collected from the three groups in terms of total phenolic contents and DPPH values. The total flavonoid levels in the honey samples taken from the third group were significantly higher than the values determined in the samples taken from the other two groups, while the ABTS and FRAP levels in honey samples from the first group were significantly higher than the values determined in samples from the other two groups. It was concluded that the total phenolic substances, total flavonoid contents, and DPPH, ABTS, and FRAP values of honey samples collected from these honey bee colonies changed in direct proportion to the severity of V. destructor infestation.Keywords: Ankara regionhoneytotal phenolic substancestotal flavonoid contentsVarroa destructor Disclosure statementNo potential conflict of interest was reported by the authors.Additional informationFundingThis study was supported by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Türkiye (TÜBİTAK 2209 Scientific Activities Support Program, Project No: 1919B012002568).","PeriodicalId":15006,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Apicultural Research","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135643410","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Oxytetracycline (OTC) has been used to combat this disease in some countries. Although OTC resistance was not previously reported despite its long-term use, the first case was finally detected in an M. plutonius strain isolated in Canada in 2019. In Japan, OTC has not been approved for use in the control of any honey bee diseases. However, after testing 77 M. plutonius strains isolated in Japan between the 1980s and 2010s, we identified four OTC-resistant strains with a minimum inhibitory concentration of OTC on agar medium of 16 µg/ml. The four strains were isolated in 2008 (1 strain), 2013 (1 strain), and 2015 (2 strains); i.e., before the Canadian OTC-resistant isolate. These results provide insights into the mechanisms underlying the development of OTC-resistant M. plutonius.Keywords: European foulbroodMelissococcus plutoniusoxytetracyclineantibiotic resistanceJapan AcknowledgmentsThe present study was conducted under regulatory research projects for food safety, animal health, and plant protection (JPJ008617.17935699) funded by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan. Previous studies have found a high diversity of A. cerana in mountainous areas or islands. To better understand the morphological diversity of A. cerana, we focused on the eastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP), a region with high mountains, Weizhou Island, Yongxing Island and Hainan Island, much of which lacks systematic investigation of honey bee diversity. Five sampling sites in the plain were also selected as references. A total of 140 colonies of A. cerana were collected from 9 localities in QTP, 3 localities in islands, and 5 localities in plain. We used standard morphometry and geometric morphometrics to assess the level of diversity, in which principal component analysis and discriminant analysis were conducted. The results revealed the A. cerana populations from QTP and islands were differentiated from the plain populations. Moreover, two populations from QTP and one from Yongxing Island showed significant divergence. Our study provided insights into the A. cerana diversity and provides information for the effective conservation of A. cerana genetic resources in China.","PeriodicalId":15006,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Apicultural Research","volume":"62 1","pages":"647 - 655"},"PeriodicalIF":1.9,"publicationDate":"2023-05-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45802849","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Symptomatic and asymptomatic specimens of the introduced solitary wild bees Megachile sculpturalis and Megachile disjunctiformis collected at eleven Central European locations were screened for DWV infections. Even though virus spillover is common, and DWV was detected in other bee species collected in the same habitat as Megachile spp., neither DWV-A nor DWV-B were found in any of the samples (N = 54) including two symptomatic males with deformed wings. This indicates that other stressors were responsible for the observed clinical symptoms, thereby highlighting the necessity of differential diagnostics.","PeriodicalId":15006,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Apicultural Research","volume":"62 1","pages":"823 - 825"},"PeriodicalIF":1.9,"publicationDate":"2023-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48872466","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
