The edible bird’s nest (EBN) is a naturally occurring food product made from the saliva of swiftlet birds ( Aerodramus fuci-phagus & Aerodramus maximus ) in the form of a nest, and it has been consumed as healthy food or tonic for decades. This research aimed to study the possible protective effects of EBN against Cd toxicity in ovaries of Sprague Dawley rats. Thirty (30) female Sprague Dawley rats were assigned into five groups as follows: group 1-Negative control (NC) received distilled water; group 2-positive control (PC) administered with CdCl 2 , 5mg/kg BW; while groups EBN 1, EBN 2, and EBN 3 received CdCl 2 (5mg/kg BW) concurrently with graded concentrations of 60, 90 and 120 mg/kg BW of EBN, respectively. After four weeks of treatment, rats were euthanized to collect ovaries for histopathological studies using hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) stain. Expressions of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) were analyzed through immunohistochemistry, and levels of superoxidase dismutase (SOD) were assessed using a SOD assay kit. Oral administration of CdCl 2 without EBN supplement resulted in significantly decreased (p<0.05) immunohistochemical expressions of VEGF in ovarian tissue and a decrease (p<0.05) in the activity of SOD. Moreover, ovarian histopathological changes, including follicular cysts and a significant increase (p<0.05) in the number of atretic follicles, while a decrease in the number of growing follicles was noted in Cd only treated group. Animals treated with CdCl 2 and EBN at three different dosages resulted in significantly increased (p<0.05) expressions of VEGF in ovarian tissues, low degenerative changes with normal histomorphology as well as significantly increased (p<0.05) SOD activity as compared to the PC group. Overall, the findings revealed that oral exposure to Cd at a dose rate of 5 mg/kg BW resulted in significant alterations in ovaries, as evidenced by a lower degree of VEGF expression along with reduced antioxidant activity and histomorphological changes. Meanwhile, EBN proved to exhibit a significant protective role against Cd toxicity in ovaries, possibly through its antioxidant effect.","PeriodicalId":15004,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Animal Health and Production","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67445655","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Two hundred and forty samples of RTE meat sandwiches, vegetable salad, and tahini sauce were used in the study. The washing of vegetable salad for 10 min with water providing 50 ppm chlorine reduced (p < 0.05) the aerobic plate count (APC), Bacillus cereus (B. cereus) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) count. Similarly, addition of 1% garlic essential oil during formulation of tahini sauce reduced (p < 0.05) APC, B. cereus and S. aureus count. The counts in RTE meat sandwiches after using treated green salad and tahini sauce reduced (p < 0.05) APC count from (5.58 ± 1.21 and 6.54 ± 1.12) to (3.2 ± 0.22 and 4. 89 ± 0.31) log10CFU/g. The counts of B.cereus reduced (p < 0.05) from (2.98 ± 0.11 and 3.34 ± 0.15) to (<2 and 2. 49 ± 0.09) and S.aureus reduced (p < 0.05) from (3.18 ± 0.15 and 3.85 ± 0.13) to (<2 and 2. 87± 0.09) log10CFU/g. These results demonstrated that use of treated vegetable salad (washed by chlorine water) and tahini sauce (containing 1% garlic essential oil) in preparation of RTE meat sandwiches results the improved bacteriological quality of RTE meat sandwiches.","PeriodicalId":15004,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Animal Health and Production","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67446063","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purpose of this study was to di-agnose cattle with respiratory problems, as well as to assess the nature of the lesions. A variety of practical approaches are used to examine respiratory disorders in cattle. The present study involved 55 cows of which 10 cows were clinically healthy and served as the control group. Cows were brought to the clinic for a number of complaints, including in-appetence, cough, dyspnea and nasal discharges. The total leucocytic counts, aspartate aminotransferase activities, and carbon dioxide tension were significantly higher in all diseased cows. The ultrasonographical examination of the lungs demonstrated several comet-tail artifacts in cows affected with pulmonary emphysema. Various degrees of pulmonary consolidation in bronchopneumonic cows were observed. Furthermore, cows with pleurisy showed anechoic pleural effusion with fibrin deposits and an irregular pleural surface. It is concluded that, hematological and biochemical findings are the key indicators of bovine health, and they are more expressive when correlated with the history, clinical symptoms, and ultrasonographic examination of cows with respiratory diseases.","PeriodicalId":15004,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Animal Health and Production","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67444846","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Mortality reached 24% in three days and morbidity was close to 60%. Animals arrived in feedlot three to four days before during the weekend and overwhelmed the expected entrance in 300%. Upon arrival the animals (among 7 to 8 months old, weighing 180-200kg) were received in a hallway employed to provisionally keep animals before assignment in a pen. The hallway was crowded to the point that the animals were restrained and many of them were unable to reach the sole drinker. No food was provided. The next Monday morning, animals were routinely processed (almost 60 h after) and assigned to a pen with drinkers and corn straw in feeders. However, that day many animals suddenly died (90), and many more (114), succumbed during the following two days (204/850=24%). The post mortem exams registered bronchopneumonia and abomasal ulcers, many of them (62 cases/204=30.4%) perforated causing peritonitis, in absence of severe bronchopneumonia. At first time, abomasal ulcers were considered a new syndrome with suspected clostridial disease or poisoning. A proposal pathogenesis established an initial intolerable stress causing ulcers and subsequently, the hunger forced aggressive consumption of straw corn stalks provoking ruminal bloat with distended (or displaced) abomasum, resulting in ischemic necrosis of the ulcer edges with perforation and fatal peritonitis.","PeriodicalId":15004,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Animal Health and Production","volume":"7 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67444541","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
