However, ERDA and other forward scattering IBA techniques suffer from the possibility of the occurence of Mott scattering. This leads to deviations in the elastic differential cross sections which in turn demand special care in the treatment of the obtained experimental spectra. To address this issue, a new code has been developed, called MottCalc (Mott Calculator). Based on the analytical formula, first developed by Mott, which describes the phenomenon, the code is capable of producing theoretical angular and energy distributions of such differential cross sections along with the appropriate R33 files, which in turn can be implemented in all the widely used analytical codes (SIMNRA, DF, POTKU etc.). The electronic screening effect is taken into account in these calculations by implementing the Andersen model. A list of 314 different isotopes is available to choose from as projectile and target nuclei. The list can be expanded with radioactive isotopes. The program is available in two distinct versions, an Excel Spreadsheet and a stand-alone application. Both versions of the program can be freely downloaded from the webpage of the Nuclear Physics group of NTUA (nuclearphysics.ntua.gr/downloads.php). The implementation of the code as well as the features and capabilities of both versions of the program are presented in the current work along with a brief synopsis of the elastic Mott scattering phenomenon.","PeriodicalId":148854,"journal":{"name":"HNPS Proceedings","volume":"32 50","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-04-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141211175","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the present work, the 234U(n,f) cross section was measured for which only a few available discrepant data exist in literature leading to poor evaluations. More specifically, four irradiations were performed at the 5.5 MV Tandem Accelerator Laboratory of NCSR “Demokritos” using quasi-monoenergetic neutrons produced by the 3H(d,n)4He reaction in the 14.8-19.2 MeV energy range. The 234U(n,f) cross section was measured relatively to the 235U(n,f) and 238U(n,f) reference ones and in order to perform the in-beam measurements for each of the actinide targets (234U, 238U, 235U), a Micromegas detector was used to record the fission fragments. The target-detector pairs were placed in an Al chamber filled with a Ar:CO2 (in 80:20 volume fraction) gas mixture at atmospheric pressure and temperature. The efficiency of the Micromegas detectors was estimated by Monte-Carlo simulations using the GEF and FLUKA codes. In addition, a detailed study of the neutron energy spectra was carried out by coupling both NeuSDesc and MCNP5 codes in order to take into account and correct for the contribution of low energy parasitic neutrons in the fission yields.","PeriodicalId":148854,"journal":{"name":"HNPS Proceedings","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-04-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115774131","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We employ a variational method, in the framework of the Thomas-Fermi approximation, to study the effect of the symmetry energy on the neutron skin thickness and symmetry energy coefficients of various nuclei. The isospin asymmetry function a(r) is directly related to the symmetry energy as a consequence of the variational principle. In addition to this, the Coulomb interaction is included in a self-consistent way. The energy density of the asymmetric nuclear matter that is used, has its origins in a momentum-dependent interaction.","PeriodicalId":148854,"journal":{"name":"HNPS Proceedings","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-04-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122973544","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The 241Am isotope (T1/2 = 433 years) is highly present in nuclear waste, accounting for about 1.8% of the actinide mass in PWR UOx nuclear reactors’ waste [2]. In addition, the 241Am isotope is further produced by the β decay of the 241Pu isotope (T1/2 = 14.3 years). Given the high production rate of 241Am isotope, its incineration with concurrent energy production is considered to be of utmost importance for the design and implementation of the recycling of existing nuclear waste. Sensitivity studies of the proposed systems for energy production showed that high-precision measurements of the cross section of the 241Am(n,f) reaction are required. In the present work, the 241Am(n,f) reaction cross section was measured in the Second Experimental Area of the n_TOF facility at CERN, using an array of Micromegas detectors. For the measurement, six targets of 241Am with average activity of 17 MBq per sample were coupled with an equal number of detectors in a common chamber. Additionally two 235U and two 238U samples were coupled with Micromegas detectors utilizing the neutron flux determination. Within this work, an overview of the experimental set-up and the adopted data analysis technique is presented along with preliminary results.","PeriodicalId":148854,"journal":{"name":"HNPS Proceedings","volume":"34 7","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-04-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141211354","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The sources were supposed to increase the lighting collection efficiency of these rods through the ionization of the surrounding air. Nevertheless, this improvement has never been established conclusively. Such devices are, in most cases, not accessible by the pub- lic; therefore, the dose to the population is considered insignificant. However, the possibility of radioactive material leakage, due to the source attachment failure, and the subsequent contamination of the surroundings that could lead to possible health risk of the public cannot be excluded. In this work, the case of 241Am contamination due to a lightning rod conductor failure is investigated. This contamination was accidentally detected on the surface soil around a laboratory building in the National Technical University of Athens Campus, during a routine in-situ gamma-ray measurement campaign that took place in 2003. A detailed survey revealed that this 241Am contamination was due to the leakage from two lightning rods on the building roof. Consequently the rods were removed from the building and the contamination pattern on the roof and on the surface soil around the building was examined in detail. From the results obtained so far it may be concluded that there exists well localized contamination on the roof and also around the building. It was established that the pathway through which contamination reached the ground was the rainwater drainage system of the building. The gamma ray dose rate due to 241Am contamination found on the roof and on the surface soil is low compared to that due to its natural radioactivity and does not seem to pose any health risk to the people working in the building or to the public.","PeriodicalId":148854,"journal":{"name":"HNPS Proceedings","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-02-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116638063","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An interpretation of this discrepancy has been in terms of tunnelling in semiclassical models, with the observed depletion being taken as evidence of a \"friction\" under the barrier. An extension of that approach is to consider tunnellin in fully quantal models. We consider tunnelling in one-dimensional models to investigate possible sources for such a friction. Under certain conditions, we find that tunnelling may be enhanced or diminished by up to 50%, which finds analogy with observation, without the invocation of a friction under the barrier.","PeriodicalId":148854,"journal":{"name":"HNPS Proceedings","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-02-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114878341","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
