The threshold can be used as an upper or lower limit or define a range based on which we can exclude connections from the graph, thus resulting to different views of a graph. We examine for various values of the threshold the effect it has on the task of community detection and we propose a method to validate the results of the corresponding clusterings against the clustering of the original graph. We transform the clusterings in comparable forms and we employ four known measures for clustering validation in order to examine their resemblance. We present some preliminary experiments to evaluate the effects of a threshold on the clustering task and we outline possible usage of the different views that are produced.","PeriodicalId":148359,"journal":{"name":"Ph.D. Workshop on Information and Knowledge Management","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130252433","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Existing approaches typically perform these two steps using a pipeline architecture: they use a Named-Entity Recognition (NER) system to find the boundaries of mentions in text, and an Entity Linking (EL) system to connect the mentions to entries in structured or semi-structured repositories like Wikipedia. However, the two tasks are tightly coupled, and each type of system can benefit significantly from the kind of information provided by the other. In this proposal, we present a joint model for NER and EL, called NEREL, that takes a large set of candidate mentions from typical NER systems and a large set of candidate entity links from EL systems, and ranks the candidate mention-entity pairs together to make joint predictions. In our initial NER and EL experiments across three datasets, NEREL significantly outperforms or comes close to the performance of two state-of-the-art NER systems, and it outperforms 6 competing EL systems. On the benchmark MSNBC dataset, NEREL provides a 60% reduction in error over the next-best NER system and a 68% reduction in error over the next-best EL system.","PeriodicalId":148359,"journal":{"name":"Ph.D. Workshop on Information and Knowledge Management","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115972542","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Next we present our current progress on this topic, in which we have spotted anomalies by evaluating 15 behavioral features proposed in the state-of-the-art approaches. Then we propose a novel hybrid classification/clustering method to detect colluders in our dataset based on selected informative features. Experimental results show that our method promisingly improve the performance of traditional classifiers by incorporating clustering for the smoothing. Finally, possible extensions of our current work and challenges in achieving them are discussed as our future directions.","PeriodicalId":148359,"journal":{"name":"Ph.D. Workshop on Information and Knowledge Management","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131353987","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the task of automatic recognition and extraction of tables embedded in documents is still a significant challenge, and data contained within tables still remains under-utilised. Although some common steps can be defined for table extraction, there is no generic approach for table extraction tasks which can be applied to different sources and provide an end-to-end repeatable work-flow. This paper looks at the table extraction problem from the process point of view and proposes a table extraction workflow, which can be considered as a plug-and-play architecture for table extraction. Also, we present an overview of our complete system where the extracted tables are stored and managed. Table extraction is considered in the context of financial statements in this work, but the methods apply generally.","PeriodicalId":148359,"journal":{"name":"Ph.D. Workshop on Information and Knowledge Management","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127273413","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We present a personal view of how style impacts the way a research work is perceived, including hopefully useful advice to junior researchers on how to better present their research. Illustrating with concrete examples of what-to-do and what-to-avoid, we cover the following areas: structure of a research paper, writing style, and typography [1, 6]; presentation of experiments as tables and graphs in articles [3, 2, 4] and oral presentations [5]; dissemination of the research through online availability of written material, datasets, and code. We point to highly regarded reference works on these topics, for further reading.","PeriodicalId":148359,"journal":{"name":"Ph.D. Workshop on Information and Knowledge Management","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130595133","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The macro-level investigation focuses on establishing theoretical models while micro-level investigation focuses on the user actions. In this paper, we propose using search tactics as means of examining search processes in collaborative exploratory search, which can be seen as a middle layer between the macro-level and micro-level. We reported a user study in which participants worked on exploratory Web search tasks using our CollabSearch system under two conditions: collaborative and individual. Using the two methods - action pairs and Hidden Markov Model (HMM) to model search tactics, we discovered some insights about the different patterns of search tactics that participants explored under collaborative and individual search conditions. In the future, we plan to improve the HMM model as a semi-automatic way to detect search tactics. In this study, we further analyze a particular search tactic - query reformulation in collaborative search and discovered the possible sources of new query terms. In the future, we plan to implement a query suggestion algorithm to better support team users' query reformulation tactics. This study provides some guidance for designers on the range of behaviors and activities that a collaborative search system should support. Further studies are needed to fully understand them.","PeriodicalId":148359,"journal":{"name":"Ph.D. Workshop on Information and Knowledge Management","volume":"1183 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116481959","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Tagging has been used to improve the organization of documents in a collection, but it has various limitations. We propose to improve the analysis and exploration of tagged document collections by organizing the documents into clusters and allowing users to perform online analytical processing on the clusters. However, supporting OLAP on clusters of documents poses various challenges that need to be addressed. These challenges include providing efficient representations for cluster centroids and document positions inside the clusters, dealing with overlapping clusters, efficient and accurate aggregation of clusters, providing functionality for helping users find representative documents for a cluster, and determining the strength of relationship between clusters.","PeriodicalId":148359,"journal":{"name":"Ph.D. Workshop on Information and Knowledge Management","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122664894","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
