It leverages the advantages of optical burst switching and WDM rings, while using a token-based medium access scheme. In this paper, we investigate protection together with spatial reuse property. Specifically we show how protection in OBT can be different from conventional protection and propose three algorithms for implementing a fast and low implementation cost, unidirectional 1:1 protection scheme. We analyzed the performance of these schemes via simulation and found an optimum algorithm for minimizing data loss and maximizing data delivery during the fault.","PeriodicalId":147887,"journal":{"name":"2006 3rd International Conference on Broadband Communications, Networks and Systems","volume":"124 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116326064","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we propose a new PPM approach that improves the current state of the art in two practical directions: (I) it improves the efficiency and accuracy of IP traceback and (2) it provides incentives for ISPs to deploy IP traceback in their networks. Our PPM approach employs a new IP header encoding scheme to store the whole identification information of a router into a single packet. This eliminates the computation overhead and false positives due to router identification fragmentation. Our approach does not disclose the IP addresses of the routers having marked packets, thereby alleviating the ISP's security concern of disclosing network topology. Our approach is able to control the distribution of marking information. So it is suitable to be deployed as a value-added service which may create revenue for ISPs. Therefore our PPM approach improves the performance and practicability of IP traceback.","PeriodicalId":147887,"journal":{"name":"2006 3rd International Conference on Broadband Communications, Networks and Systems","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128709159","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Development of efficient algorithms for path selection and wavelength selection is crucial in minimizing the burst loss probability (BLP) in OBS networks. In this paper, we present novel Reinforcement Learning algorithms for path selection and wavelength selection in the context of OBS networks. We develop an online path selection algorithm based on Q-learning to minimize the BLP by choosing an optimal path among a set of predetermined routes between every pair of ingress and egress nodes. We also propose a Q-learning algorithm for wavelength selection that selects an optimal wavelength among the available wavelengths in a pre-routed path with an objective of minimizing the BLP. We assume no wavelength conversion and buffering to be available at the core nodes of the OBS network. We simulate the proposed algorithms under dynamic load to demonstrate that they reduce the BLP compared to the best known adaptive techniques for path selection and wavelength selection available in the literature.","PeriodicalId":147887,"journal":{"name":"2006 3rd International Conference on Broadband Communications, Networks and Systems","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124743618","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Solutions for the above have been presented using laptops, personal digital assistants (PDA), onboard flash memory chips of limited size (usually 1MB), and laboratory test equipment. All of them have a good utility for the right applications. However, considering a certain variety of WSNs, where size, battery life, and cost are crucial, none of the above solutions is satisfactory. In this paper we present a compact, lightweight, low power, and low cost multimodal sensor module SeeMote that meets the stated challenges, and is compatible with the popular MICAz mote. Our module has the following components: (1) a graphical user interface component that combines a color liquid crystal display (LCD) and 5-way buttons, (2) a power meter component that is reconfigurable for attaching various low-power devices, and (3) a data logger component that is interfaced to a removable secure digital (SD) or multimedia memory card (MMC). The module dimensions are 34times58times12 mm. This paper describes the hardware and software design and experiences while developing and using the device. The device is evaluated by comparing its parameters and functionality to laptop and PDA solutions. We conclude that SeeMote is preferred for certain WSNs, such as very large scale, difficult to reach, and wearable WSNs. We also present several applications that use the LCD module, such as the portable frequency spectrum analyzer and remote sensory data display device.","PeriodicalId":147887,"journal":{"name":"2006 3rd International Conference on Broadband Communications, Networks and Systems","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128849675","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed MAC protocol utilizes the advantages provides by the MI-UWB including multiple non-overlapping frequency channels, simultaneous transmissions in same channel as well as dynamical reconfiguration of transmission parameters. The resource allocation algorithm of the proposed MAC protocol uses a two-phase procedure to provide explicit QoS support and optimize resource utilization in a dense medium-size MI-UWB network. The underlying physical network of SMART is a reconfigurable WDM network with reconfigurability distributed over network nodes. The reconfigurable node architecture is capable of dynamically setting up, modifying, and tearing down connections that consist of multi-access hyperchannels, which are an extension of light-trails. Like light-trails, hyperchannels are used to efficiently utilize bandwidth in subwavelength granularity. Hyperchannels and hyperpaths (hybrid connection paths) make SMART scalable. Equipped with a menu of switching techniques and connection types, SMART is able to manage optimized connections, and enforce individual service qualities and overall network performance. SMART network combines the best features of optics and electronics, making the network highly intelligent. Various virtual networks can be easily constructed over SMART. SMART encompasses the best features of existing mature electrical and optical network technologies, making these technologies as special cases. SMART is evolvable with backward compatibility. SMART is customizable for constructing LANs, MANs and WANs, and for access and transport. SMART provides an excellent alternative for the next generation Internet.","PeriodicalId":147887,"journal":{"name":"2006 3rd International Conference on Broadband Communications, Networks and Systems","volume":"148 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129018111","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many of these applications require high end-to- end throughput and/or bounded delay. Random access link-layer protocols such as carrier sense multiple access (CSMA) which are widely used in single-hop networks perform poorly in the multi-hop regime and provide no end-to-end QoS guarantees. The primary causes for their poor performance are uncoordinated interference and unfairness in exclusive access of the shared wireless medium. Furthermore, random access schemes do not leverage spatial reuse effectively and require routes to be link- aware. In this paper, we propose and study MAX, a time-division- multiplexed resource allocation framework for multi-hop networks with regular topologies. MAX tiling delivers optimal end-to-end throughput across arbitrarily large regularly structured networks while providing bounded delay. It outperforms CSMA-based random access protocols by a factor of 5 to 8. The MAX approach also supports network services including flexible uplink and downlink bandwidth management, deterministic route admission control, and optimal gateway placement. MAX has been implemented on IEEE 802.15.3 embedded nodes and a test-bed of 50 nodes has been deployed both indoors and outdoors.","PeriodicalId":147887,"journal":{"name":"2006 3rd International Conference on Broadband Communications, Networks and Systems","volume":"205 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123024778","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The objective of this work is to minimize the network cost and in particular, the electronic port costs incurred for meeting a given performance goal. In earlier work, we have shown the benefits of limited grooming switch architectures, where only a subset of wavelengths in a network are equipped with expensive SONET Add Drop Multiplexers (SADM) that provide the grooming functionality. In this work, we also consider the wavelength conversion capability of such groomers. This can be achieved using a digital cross-connect (DCS) in the grooming switch to switch low-speed connections between the SADMs (and hence, between wavelengths). The grooming switch thus avoids the need for expensive optical wavelength converters. Based on these observations, we propose a limited conversion based grooming architecture for optical WDM mesh networks. The local ports at every node in this architecture can be one of three types: an add- drop port, a grooming port that allows wavelength conversion or a grooming port that does not allow wavelength conversion. The problem studied is: given a static traffic model, where should the different ports be placed in a network? We formulate this as an optimization problem using an Integer Linear Programming (ILP) and present numerical results for the same. We also present a heuristic based approach to solve the problem for larger networks.","PeriodicalId":147887,"journal":{"name":"2006 3rd International Conference on Broadband Communications, Networks and Systems","volume":"380 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133318511","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

When the users want to find idle wavelengths by probing for lightpath provisioning, they may not be able to obtain information about all the idle wavelengths along the route in the overlaid lightpath network. They are only allowed to include a limited number of wavelengths for probing. In order to avoid wavelength contention and reduce blocking probability, we present a method for performance estimation of overlaid lightpath networks from a user side. In this method, we try to find wavelengths that are likely to be idle. This is done by the wavelength- based rank accounting for each pair of a source and a destination. Rank is calculated each time a lightpath is provisioned at a pair regardless of the success or failure of the provisioning. We demonstrate that the method of estimation is effective through simulation experiments and also present an initial implementation of a lightpath-provisioning system that uses our performance estimation method based on the GMPLS RSVP-TE mechanism.","PeriodicalId":147887,"journal":{"name":"2006 3rd International Conference on Broadband Communications, Networks and Systems","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133334942","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
