This study examines the use of neural networks to model friction in mechanical systems that use DC motors for actuation. Neural network designs alleviate the need to select a friction model and determine its parameters. In addition, since neural networks are inherently capable of learning, the method can be used on-line to compensate for changes in friction characteristics. Simulation studies are performed on a DC motor load case.","PeriodicalId":147838,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1994 American Control Conference - ACC '94","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-06-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131117743","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Several adaptive controller structures are given and analyzed for the case of plants with unknown parameters while being assumed that the nominal plant is of known order and relative order. The parametrized parts of two of the controller structures involve delays while those of the two remaining controllers are delay-free. Auxiliary compensating signals which weight the plant input and output integrals are incorporated in all the controller structures for stabilization purposes. It is proved that, if the unmodelled dynamics is sufficiently small at low frequencies, then the adaptive algorithm guarantees boundedness of all the signals in the closed-loop system.","PeriodicalId":147838,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1994 American Control Conference - ACC '94","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-06-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132847913","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

But principal component analysis is a linear method, and most engineering problems are nonlinear. Sometimes using the linear PCA method in nonlinear problems can bring distorted and misleading results. So there is a need for a nonlinear principal component analysis (NLPCA) method. The principal curve algorithm was a breakthrough of solving the NLPCA problem, but the algorithm does not yield an NLPCA model which can be used for predictions. In this paper the authors present an NLPCA method which integrates the principal curve algorithm and neural networks. The results on both simulated and real problems show that the method is excellent for solving nonlinear principal component problems. Potential applications of NLPCA are also discussed in this paper.","PeriodicalId":147838,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1994 American Control Conference - ACC '94","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-06-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133376098","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The results we obtain encompass numerous results from prior literature in addition'to several new results. Specifically, in addition to obtaining necessary and sufficient conditions for Lyapunov and asymptotic stability, we consider the case of semistability. Semistability is of particular interest in the analysis of vibrating systems in that it represents the case of \"damped rigid body modes\", that is, systems that eventually come to rest, although not necessarily at a specified equilibrium point. This paper presents the first treatment of semistability for matrix second-order systems.","PeriodicalId":147838,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1994 American Control Conference - ACC '94","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-06-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133657709","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An interesting aspect of the discrete-time Riccati equation, which is not shared by its continuous-time counterpart, is the fact that the equation may have a meaningful solution even if the measurement noise covariance is singular. These discrete-time singular measurement noise problems arise from sampled-data problems involving averaging A/D devices. These problems involve singular discrete-time plant dynamics as well. The purpose of this paper, therefore, is to extend the generalized eigenvalue approach to solve the discrete-time Riccati equation in the presence of both singular plant dynamics and singular measurement noise. The numerical method we develop allows arbitrary rank deficiency in the measurement noise covariance, including the extreme case of noiseless measurements.","PeriodicalId":147838,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1994 American Control Conference - ACC '94","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-06-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127897033","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on differential geometric control theory, the proposed autopilot offers the potential for improving the level of safety and the performance over those autopilot designs based on linearized models. And, according to the concept of the proportional navigation, but under milder constraint, a new guidance law is proposed to intercept a nonmaneuvering target in the aerial engagement scenario. To demonstrate the efficiency of our autopilot and guidance law, the computer simulation of the BTT missile is illustrated in several engagement scenarios and shows the satisfactory results.","PeriodicalId":147838,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1994 American Control Conference - ACC '94","volume":"84 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-06-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127897993","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper demonstrates that, simply using output feedback, the input-output linearization of affine nonlinear systems with zero dynamics being exponentially stable can be accomplished by using multilayer neural network to estimate the instantaneous values of the nonlinear terms appearing in the feedback linearizing control law. Neither mathematical model nor internal state of the nonlinear system is required. The configuration for training the multilayer neural network as a device of the input-output linearizing controller is established. An example of affine nonlinear system is studied by computer simulations for various cases linearizing control.","PeriodicalId":147838,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1994 American Control Conference - ACC '94","volume":"100 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-06-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115224457","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
