We aim to develop WC references for age and gender in youngsters in Autonomous Region of Madeira, Portugal (RAM). A cross-sectional study was developed in two phases. Between May 2004 and May 2005 (in 1st cycle schools) and between October 2007 and June 2009 (in 2nd and 3rd cycle, and secondary and professional schools). A representative sample of 6987 individuals was gathered, with 3532 girls and 3455 boys aged from 6 to 18 years old. WC was measured with a non-elastic tape at the midpoint between the iliac crest and the last rib. To elaborate smoothed percentiles and z-scores curves for age and gender, values were estimated between 72 and 225 months (every three months) using the LMS statistical procedure, with the exponent of the Box-Cox (L), the median (M), and coefficient of variation generalized (S) through LMSChartMaker software, version 2.76. Mean and standard deviation and charts of smoothed percentiles curves (P3, P5, P10, P25, P50, P75, P85, P90, P95 and P97) and z-scores (-2, -1, 0, 1 and 2) are presented by age and gender. These references constitute a new tool to assess cardiometabolic risk of RAM's children and adolescents.","PeriodicalId":14771,"journal":{"name":"Journal Biomedical and Biopharmaceutical Research","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83031176","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Some of these phytochemicals have been used in effort to prevent and treat several human diseases, including cancer. Several studies support the effects of dietary antioxidants as chemopreventive agents, while other reports suggest potential pharmacological anticancer activity. However, the available studies were conducted under different experimental conditions, precluding a comparative analysis of the anticancer properties of the compounds. Although osteosarcoma has a low overall incidence, it is the third most common cancer in adolescence. These cancers are generally locally aggressive and tend to produce early systemic metastases, justifying the search for novel therapeutic approaches. This work assessed the cytotoxic profile of ten antioxidants from food from plant origin on human osteosarcoma cells (U2OS): catechin, kaempferol, quercetin, resveratrol, gallic acid, ferulic acid, ascorbic acid, melatonin, lycopene, and β-carotene. Cell viability was determined using the crystal violet assay (24 h). β-carotene and gallic acid considerably reduced cell viability, with IC50 values of 18.8 μM and 184.5 μM, respectively. The remaining compounds did not markedly reduce cell viability. These results might contribute to the rational and evidence-based selection of natural antioxidants to be included in anticancer strategies and to further explore possible food-inspired drugs.","PeriodicalId":14771,"journal":{"name":"Journal Biomedical and Biopharmaceutical Research","volume":"34 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87774075","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Microencapsulation is a good strategy for preservation of oils as it protects bioactive components from deteriorating factors and limits the loss of volatile substances. The drying method used was a spray dryer, using modified starch, arabic gum, and maltodextrin as the encapsulating materials. The microparticles were characterized with respect to the moisture content, water activity (Aw), physicochemical properties, and morphology. The samples showed an Aw of approximately 0.10 and moisture of 1.03 %, which are relatively common in powders produced by spray drying. The microparticles had spherical shape with diameter of approximately 23.1 ± 0.05 μm, both of which were influenced by the process parameters. The microparticles showed the particle spread, calculated as span, was 1.56 ± 0.03, which is typical of the type of atomizer used (double-fluid). The particles loaded with seed oil from the passion fruit of the Caatinga were successfully produced by spray drying and the characterization showed low values of Aw, moisture content, diameter, spherical shape, and the value of span showed a homogeneous particle size distribution. The results are promising and suitable for future applications that contribute to development of food and cosmetics products.","PeriodicalId":14771,"journal":{"name":"Journal Biomedical and Biopharmaceutical Research","volume":"36 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83174544","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Histological and clinical exams have been used for the diagnosis of PIH and to determine the correct treatment. However, Reflectance Confocal Microscopy (RCM) has the potential to replace these methods since it is a noninvasive advanced technique and has a higher diagnostic accuracy than dermatoscopy. The aim of this study was to characterize PIH and correlate the main aspects observed by RCM with the macroscopic characteristics of acne-related PIH. Thus, 12 subjects with previously diagnosed acne and PIH were selected for the study. PIH was evaluated by RCM. The brightness of the basal cell layer, the dermal-epidermal junction (DEJ) thickness, and the depth of dermal papillae were quantified and the morphological and structural features of the DEJ were analyzed. The results showed an increase of epidermal pigmentation, a reduction of DEJ thickness, and no change in epidermal thickness. Melanophages were observed in the papillary dermis, as well as changes in the size and shape of dermal papillae. Finally, the study describes the characteristics of PIH and can help dermatologists to diagnose PIH with an innovative method that reduces the stress associated with a histological biopsy.","PeriodicalId":14771,"journal":{"name":"Journal Biomedical and Biopharmaceutical Research","volume":"20 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85906029","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
