Therefore, incremental SPL analyses exploit commonalities and focus on the differences between products to reduce the analysis effort. However, existing techniques are influenced by the order in which products are analyzed. The more similar subsequently analyzed products are, the greater is the potential reduction of the overall analysis effort as similar products imply less differences to be analyzed. Hence, an order of products, where the total number of differences is minimized, facilitates incremental SPL analyses. In this paper, we apply graph algorithms to determine optimized product orders. We capture products as nodes in a graph, where solution-space information defines edge weights between product nodes. We adopt existing heuristics for finding an optimal solution of the traveling salesperson problem to determine a path in the product graph with minimal costs. A path represents an optimized product order w.r.t. minimized differences between all products. We realize a prototype of our approach and evaluate its applicability and performance showing a significant optimization compared to standard and random orders.","PeriodicalId":147537,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 11th International Workshop on Variability Modelling of Software-Intensive Systems","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124781041","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Historical software product lines contains industrial secrets their owners do not want to disclose to a wide audience. The open source community contributed to large-scale cases such as Eclipse, Linux kernels, or web-based plugin systems (Drupal, WordPress). To assess accuracy of sampling and prediction approaches (bugs, performance), a case where all products can be enumerated is desirable. As configuration issues do not lie within only one place but are scattered across technologies and assets, a case exposing such diversity is an additional asset. To this end, we present in this paper our efforts in building an explicit product line on top of JHipster, an industrial open-source Web-app configurator that is both manageable in terms of configurations (≈ 163,000) and diverse in terms of technologies used. We present our efforts in building a variability-aware chain on top of JHipster's configurator and lessons learned using it as a teaching case at the University of Rennes. We also sketch the diversity of analyses that can be performed with our infrastructure as well as early issues found using it. Our long term goal is both to support students and researchers studying variability analysis and JHipster developers in the maintenance and evolution of their tools.","PeriodicalId":147537,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 11th International Workshop on Variability Modelling of Software-Intensive Systems","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120952265","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Traditionally, these sub-disciplines are supported by disjoint tools, leading to undesirable context switches. In this tool-centric survey, approaches for combining MDSE, SPLE, and VC in a pair-wise or even holistic fashion are categorized and assessed. The combination of MDSE and SPLE is natural since models are used to describe both the problem and the solution space. Moreover, specific VC support for models may improve collaborative MDSE in a similar way as dedicated SPL versioning supports evolution control. Last, both VC and SPLE deal with different types of variability - in time and in space, respectively -, such that an integration promises to close the gap between historical and logical (model) versioning. Results indicate that these promises are only satisfied partly by existing approaches. To attest this, we conclude with a list of usage scenarios for combined MDSE/SPLE/VC that cannot be adequately addressed by the current tools.","PeriodicalId":147537,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 11th International Workshop on Variability Modelling of Software-Intensive Systems","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116486258","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In previous work, we introduced a variability mining technique to identify variability information (commonalities and differences) in block-based model variants (e.g., MATLAB/Simulink models), which can be used to guide manual transition from clone-and-own to managed reuse of a software product line (SPL). In this paper, we present a procedure that uses the extracted variability information to generate a transformational delta-oriented SPL fully automatically. We generate a delta language specifically tailored to transforming models in the analyzed modeling language and utilize it to generate delta modules expressing variation of the SPL's implementation artifacts. The procedure seamlessly integrates with our variability mining technique and allows to fully adopt a managed reuse strategy (i.e., generation of products from a single code base) without manual overhead. We show the feasibility of the procedure by applying it to state chart and MATLAB/Simulink model variants from two industrial case studies.","PeriodicalId":147537,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 11th International Workshop on Variability Modelling of Software-Intensive Systems","volume":"121 5","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"113969618","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Developers use them to communicate and reason about a system, in order to maintain and evolve it. These activities, however, require knowing the locations of features---a common challenge when a system has many developers, many (cloned) variants, or a long lifespan. We believe that embedding feature-location information into software artifacts via annotations eases typical feature-related engineering tasks, such as modifying and removing features, or merging cloned features into a product line. However, regardless of where such annotations stem from---whether embedded by developers when writing code, or retroactively recovered using a feature-location technique---tool support is needed for developers to exploit such annotations. In this tool demonstration, we present a lightweight tool that extracts annotations from software artifacts, aggregates and processes them, and visualizes feature-related information for developers. Views, such as which files implement a specific feature, are presented on different levels of abstraction. Feature metrics, such as feature size, feature scattering, feature tangling, and numbers of feature authors, are also presented. Our tool also incorporates an information-retrieval-based feature-location technique to retroactively recover feature locations.","PeriodicalId":147537,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 11th International Workshop on Variability Modelling of Software-Intensive Systems","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116733277","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, they introduce new challenges to software testing due to a potentially large number of variants. While each variant should be tested, testing resources are limited and, thus, a retest of all, partially redundant, test cases for each variant is not feasible in SPL testing. Coping with these issues has been a major research focus in recent years, leading to different testing approaches. However, risk-based testing has not gained much attention in the SPL domain while being a successful approach for single-software systems. In this paper, we propose a novel risk-based testing approach for SPL integration testing. We incrementally test SPLs by stepping from one variant to the next. For each variant, we automatically compute failure probabilities and failure impacts for its architectural components. To avoid a computational overhead of generating and analyzing each variant, we exploit the variability between variants defined as deltas to focus on important changes. We evaluate our approach using an automotive case study, showing that the risk-based technique leads to positive results compared to random and delta-oriented testing.","PeriodicalId":147537,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 11th International Workshop on Variability Modelling of Software-Intensive Systems","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115333973","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To do so efficiently requires variational data structures that make the variability explicit in the underlying data and the operations used to manipulate it. Variational data structures have been developed ad hoc for many applications, but there is little general understanding of how to design them or what tradeoffs exist among them. In this paper, we strive for a more systematic exploration and analysis of a variational data structure. We want to know how different design decisions affect the performance and scalability of a variational data structure, and what properties of the underlying data and operation sequences need to be considered. Specifically, we study several alternative designs of a variational stack, a data structure that supports efficiently representing and computing with multiple variants of a plain stack, and that is a common building block in many algorithms. The different variational stacks are presented as a small product line organized by three design decisions. We analyze how these design decisions affect the performance of a variational stack with different usage profiles. Finally, we evaluate how these design decisions affect the performance of the variational stack in a real-world scenario: in the interpreter VarexJ when executing real software containing variability.","PeriodicalId":147537,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 11th International Workshop on Variability Modelling of Software-Intensive Systems","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125551553","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Variability features can enable services to adapt to customer requirements and to changes in the context in which they execute. In the past years, it has been an active area in both research and industry. SPLE aims at improving productivity and reducing the time, effort, and cost required to develop a family of products (also called variants). The key point to achieve this goal is to manage the variability among various products of a Software Product Line (SPL). Variability is commonly expressed in terms of features, i.e., units of difference between software products. A product can thus be viewed as a set of features. Dependencies between features are typically represented in a Feature Model (FM) [11], whose ultimate purpose is to define which combinations of features (that is, which products) are valid [16]. Behavior of both the features and the core behavior (i.e., the behavior shared by all products in the line) may be represented by (variants of) state machines [3, 13].","PeriodicalId":147537,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 11th International Workshop on Variability Modelling of Software-Intensive Systems","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124122570","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Multiple product variants are represented in a product line, however the selection of a particular configuration depends on stakeholders' functional and non-functional requirements. Methods like constraint programming and evolutionary algorithms have been used to support the configuration process. They consider a set of product requirements like resource constraints, stakeholders' preferences, and optimization objectives. Nevertheless, scalability and performance concerns start to be an issue when facing large-scale product lines and runtime environments. Thus, this paper presents a survey that analyses strengths and drawbacks of 21 approaches that support product line configuration. This survey aims to: i) evidence which product requirements are currently supported by studied methods; ii) how scalability and performance is considered in existing approaches; and iii) point out some challenges to be addressed in future research.","PeriodicalId":147537,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 11th International Workshop on Variability Modelling of Software-Intensive Systems","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114149550","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
